When I got there, I missed the HI atmosphere, the food, and most importantly, the weather. I also missed being able to "blend in" as asians are a minority there. When I got back here, I missed the awesome backroad country drives, the feeling of freedom out on the open road, and the fact that you can drive anywhere you damned pleased without running out of road. Oh, and cheaper everything. As much as I like the mainland and as much as there are way better opportunities there, I know that I'll eventually end up here. 99MPower 08-17-2006, 05:30 PM home is Rockford, IL... we have blackhawk farms 2 miles from my house, and Road America 2 hours away... I got my BMW HPDE fix from going with a friend of mine to Road America one weekend, for one of his events, and I haven't been able to stop since.. I'm going home this weekend, and will be at the ALMS race at Road America, hopefully on sunday. LOTS of wakeboarding/barefooting on friends new ski boat, and ROAD TRIPS... going to see blue man group on saturday night in downtown chicago, going to be all sorts of good stuff 808Cardinal87 08-17-2006, 05:34 PM Trader Joe's, and a mainland salary. mz.368 08-17-2006, 05:36 PM home is Rockford, IL... we have blackhawk farms 2 miles from my house, and Road America 2 hours away... LOTS of wakeboarding/barefooting on friends new ski boat, and ROAD TRIPS... going to see blue man group on saturday night in downtown chicago, going to be all sorts of good stuff very cool. I think track time (I am easy driving distance to Watkins Glen, Summit Point and Lime Rock and a little longer to VIR and Mid Ohio) and road trips will be what I miss as well. But I will sacrifice them for a whole new life experience and take it from there. :alright mz.368 08-17-2006, 05:36 PM Trader Joe's, and a mainland salary. no trader joe's on the islands  where did you live? 808Cardinal87 08-17-2006, 05:40 PM no trader joe's on the islands  where did you live?Nope. :cry Lived/worked for 4 years in the Bay Area, CA. mz.368 08-17-2006, 05:42 PM Nope. Reverend73 08-17-2006, 06:15 PM Things I hated about hawaii: roads suck, traffic sucks, road trips arent an option, shipping anything is expensive, shooting range range nazi's, gun laws, safety check bs, requires two license plates, relatively few places to "legally" off road, no track anymore, no seasons (ie fall, winter, spring and summer), can only get 92 octane(unless you spend $7.50 a gallon for the 100 octane stuff), no parking or cramped parking, no Chick fil A, no Sonic Things I liked: great beaches (usually), great hiking, lots of scenic places to see, $2200/mo. housing allowance, $530/mo. COLA YMMV, flame suit on. :) mz.368 08-17-2006, 06:16 PM Not compared to here! :mad visions of franchising opportunities are dancing in my head :) something I thought was strange....everything I read and hear says HI is more expensive than the mainland...and that makes sense as it is in the middle of the ocean. So, for sh!ts and giggles I went to the best buy site, looked up the honolulu circular then looked up my local circular, they were identical :confused Housing is more expensive (depending what you compare it to, but overall a fair statement), electronics seem to be equal, gas prices are about the same (compared to where I live/work), so what else is higher? I have heard even bad beer is expensive there, food? commodities/utilities? mz.368 08-17-2006, 06:19 PM Things I hated about hawaii: roads suck, traffic sucks, road trips arent an option, shipping anything is expensive, shooting range range nazi's, gun laws, safety check bs, requires two license plates, relatively few places to "legally" off road, no track anymore, no seasons (ie fall, winter, spring and summer), can only get 92 octane(unless you spend $7.50 a gallon for the 100 octane stuff), no parking or cramped parking, no Chick fil A, no Sonic Things I liked: great beaches (usually), great hiking, lots of scenic places to see, $2200/mo. housing allowance, $530/mo. BTW, can the engine hoist fit in your van? there goes my franchising opportunity :( gsn794 08-17-2006, 06:24 PM being able to drive at extremely high rates of speed on deserted country roads, skiing, and mainland grocery stores. bimbum 08-17-2006, 06:27 PM I moved here from 49 sq. mile SF to 550 sq. mile Oahu. most of the time there I never left the City so the compactness of this place (we pretty much all live along the island's edges) doesn't bother me, in fact it's more than I'm used to and it's almost all glorious beach :) but ok things I miss: family. missing my sister's kids all growing up except for the annual visits (if that). old friends. they all raising kids too, see above. lane splitting. a traffic jam just doesn't exist if you can split but for some odd reason you cannot here. I've heard every excuse in the book, weak sauce. no matter, I quit riding. if can't split what the use, like hell I'm going to sit in between cars here or anywhere. finding my freedom elsewhere like in the ocean. restaurants. we got some good ones here but not the same culinary diversity as SF which is the foodie mecca of the world. not to mention I'd like to eat at my own place but the airfare would kill me. :p heck, I even miss Ikea's manager's special, the Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce. their furniture may be crap but the meatballs, yum! and the desserts too. and the chocolates. CA roadways. Gold Country (omg beautiful touring up in the hills). I was beginning to sport tour on my bike making laps of the entire state. bordering states were w/i reach but I moved away. the planned Superferry may help in my wanderlust? just not on 2 wheels. have not yet begun to use interisland air and this may be the year. Shipping. you could buy (or sell) big items like furniture and stuff no problem. not so here. so shopping choices limited and almost monopolistic unless you pay through the nose to get that particular chaise lounge over here via boat. that's the short list. I really don't miss the mainland too much though. I'd certainly miss Hawaii more if had to move and no plans to do that. will travel when can but this is home (again). Iwantoneofthose 08-17-2006, 11:56 PM As for the front plate deal, they normally won't bug you just for shits and giggles (well, unless you're driving in Waikiki), but they definitely will tag you ($50 ticket IIRC...probably more now) if you get pulled over or if you're driving through a roadblock/DUI checkpoint. bimbum 08-18-2006, 01:21 AM dead meat when getting a parking ticket too if the officer is in training (by the book) or just being meticulous. once, I got an expired meter and expired safety ticket just for good measure. this of course opened the proverbial can of worms (oversized tires/wheels, non-stock exhaust, etc. etc. barf) thrlls 08-18-2006, 02:24 AM Sorry, can't say I would miss anything from the mainland since I never lived there. However, for the times I visited the big rock I enjoyed them nice long roads from Vegas to Arizona, as for the scenic looks I've seen better here and I've been to Kansas, Tenn, Florida, Ca. Or. Chicago was pretty nice...well the buildings anyway. Japan was nice, but too crowded and they are too concerned with image and their protocols, now I know why my grandparents moved here! On another note, I don't think I would have difficulty living anywhere in the mainland once I got used to the snow and cold weather. I would however, miss the Pickled Mango (mahalo beastie) beaches, sunsets/raise, white sand, friendly people, great food of all ethic groups, peace and quiet at home....these are some of the things I would miss from Hawaii. As for Safety checks, like Beastie said no biggie. License plate in front and back...my roady has never seen a front plate. My 318 has a Home Depot CAI through the front headlight and no problems. I even parked in front of a cop facing me while he and I pumped gas into our cars. I just gave him the Waas up with the eye brows and it was all cool. I guess if your are law abiding like me, you don't draw attention to your car going down the road. Rev/Brian - You need to learn to make the best of what you got! Also, salad bars, soup bars, olive bars, real deli counters and gourmet food sections are small if they exist at all. If you see a new product on television, you can count on it not being available for a good while here. Some sample prices: lettuce $1.50/pound (not per head) milk $4.80/half gallon orange juice $6.39/59 fluid oz eggs $2-3/dozen Cherry Garcia frozen yogurt $4.80/pint Gatorade $8.20/8-20 oz bottles 99MPower 08-18-2006, 03:14 AM $4.80 for a half gallon? i get milk for $4 a gallon gsn794 08-18-2006, 03:19 AM $4.80 for a half gallon? i get milk for $4 a gallon Costco, or maybe the commissary? Go in to Safeway or Foodland and check the prices sometime. Breathtaking! bimbum 08-18-2006, 06:41 AM I only buy cases of soymilk at Costco. side benefit is doesn't require refrigeration until opened and thus is part of my hurricane/tsunami emergency supplies :) but the dang flavored cream for coffee is expensive unless buy powdered. I trip out on Hawaii eggs more expensive than the mainland cartons but I guess economies of scale and all that even with shipping. speaking of food, get them delicious cherries on sale now while available. yumm. yes produce is more expensive, little things like this become more special. an event almost :p mz.368 08-18-2006, 06:44 AM Get your pets squared away ASAP! I agree, let's keep the politics where they belong...OT or Mr. Moderator can give out a TO! PeacockBass 08-21-2006, 04:45 AM I came from Bothell WA... just 20 mins north of Seattle... It rains alot there but here are a few things I miss- Good restraunts. Good shopping centers. ELITE drug/grocery stores the ability to go out in nature and not see people. Being able to swim in crystal clear rivers. Wearing winter clothing, such as my leather jacket. I was just looking for opinions and thoughts on what makes home "home" whether it's HI, NJ, WI, Germany....wherever. I have a good feel for what I will and won't miss already just from knowing my reasons for wanting out, was just looking for others thoughts, plus its a different way to get to know ppl...now I know Beastie lived in CO and likes snow  gsn794 08-22-2006, 03:42 AM I also miss being able to afford a house. My condo is all right, but for what this thing is worth I could buy a really nice house on a few acres (in central Virginia), put a new M3 in the garage and still have a bunch of money left over. Can't work on my car in the condo's garage either. You might want to check out http://www.hicentral.com/ mz.368 08-22-2006, 07:59 AM I also miss being able to afford a house. Here they certainly go for less but not that much less. Hope you have good friends that let you work on your car in their garage....that is one thing I know will make me :eyecrazy but it goes on my trade off list. Reverend73 08-23-2006, 12:31 PM Where is home, Rev? I apologize, but zip codes and memory are not my specialty.:D No matter, where you are now? But really.... the lack of a mandatory safety inspection, dual plates and gun laws makes it more comfortable than HI? I'm not trying to aggravate, just curious. Any more thoughts you care to share? Mahalo. Its so much more than just those things I mentioned, its the whole mentality behind the regulations, rules, laws, etc that irritate me. Folks think more laws will fix whats wrong with society, and that couldnt be further from the truth. Personal responsibility and teaching/disciplining your kids will fix what is wrong with society, not stricter laws. For the record, I am a "legal" resident of florida, but now reside in Virginia, which has the two plate thing, but I am registering my car in FL which is a one plate state. I could talk all night about this stuff so I'll quit now:D gsn794 08-23-2006, 06:23 PM I find it interesting that condos and townhouses go for 1/2 of what single homes do.
