Hope someone can help me.

I had an 'accident' with a container of take-away curry and successfully spilled it all over the steering column and steering wheel. Well I have cleaned it all up (Oh, so much fun...) but there is obviously some left inside the steering assembly shorting the horn switch because every time I turn on the ignition the horn sounds continuously. I have temporarily removed the horn fuse but this is not a solution.

I have read all the advise that "Search" found on the topic of steering wheel / air-bag removal but I am stumped by which bolts to undo to remove the air-bag on the M wheel. I can see a single Torx on each of the side arms but they seem too far out to be associated with the air bag and appear to be associated with the wheel switch assemblies.

I can see two holes on the top side behind the steering wheel face (~2 o'clock and 10 o'clock) facing towards the wheel hub but using a torch and looking down them I cannot see any Torx bolts.

I know this should be simple but I am reluctant to experiment on a new car. Hope there is someone out there with the knowledge. Thanks in advance.

Since the Z4 has a lot in common with the E46, you might want to see if that commonality extends to the steering wheel. This is a DIY for replacing the stock 3er steering wheel with an M3 wheel: link (http://www.my330i.com/mod23.php). You might want to review that and see if the process will work for your car.

Thanks Cliff3 this looks a lot more hopeful and I am sure the holes I was referring to correspond to the holes to get to the springs. Hopefully will get time to have a go today.

Pulled it all apart this afternoon and it came apart exactly as documented. The only variation to the published instructions is that the springs didn't have to be compressed to reinsert the air-bag, it simply cliped back in with a little pressure.

My problem turned out to be bits of curried meat and vegetable shorting out the horn buttons in about 3 places. Easily cleaned up, and with the wheel off plus both lower and upper steering column covers I was able to clean up a whole lot more debris just for asthetic reasons. Amazingly there doesn't appear to be any smell that I can detect which was my other worry and both leather and carpet have survived with no damage.

Thanks for the link.
