This car has always run at half on the temp gauge, now its up to 3/4 at times then back to 1/2,flush and thermostat should do it?Or is it electrical, the gauge sometimes bounces hi to low for no reason.

its always a good idea to flush out you radiator if you dont know the condision/age of the coolant. it could be a problem with the gauge cluster, it happend on my friends 2002 does the needle jump when you turn the head lights on and off?

Similar symptoms happened to me initially. Soon afterwards, the needle was staying put too far to the right.

Ended up replacing the radiator, water pump, t-stat, belts. Had no cooling issues since.

test the coolant temp gauge. ground it and see what the gauge does.

Make sure to bleed the system after the flush to remove any air bubbles. Air bubbles in the system will also cause your problem.

Probably the t-stat.

+1. Radiators may looks in good condition but may be partially clogged, thus contribuiting to the overheating problem. Radiator, t-stat, and a water pump with plastic impeller mus be replaced. It is costly but craked heads it is time consuming and waayy more costly to fix that Rad,tstat and pump.

Had the same problems, do a flush and change the thermostat. Should do the trick. Depending on how old your car is or what model, you might wanna do hoses, belts and pump while you're in there. Hoses don't last forever. Some BMW water pumps have plastic impellers which can get brittle and break over time. So if you are in there, I would change it.
