View Full Version : Machine Block For Pistons?

guess i'm a little new to the game, and didn't realize that for a set of CP pistons i would need to have my block machined first. :(

Here is the deal though:

The engine only has 8k miles on it (s52) and still has a nice factory crosshatch on the walls. Only mishap was I broke a piston ( small sliver as wide as the ring groove is deep, about an 1" long)

There are no visable defects in the walls - minus a small deposit of melted piston which is above the piston rings anyway, could easilly be removed

Can i feel confident about not machining the block? One, it seems like a waste of money, and two the s52 block is bored out enough!

so i'd really like to go with the option of a custom set of CP pistons - same price, made to fit the stock block

Just get it hot tanked and honed. Other than that, you should be able to run the stock sized pistons without a problem. The last thing you want is blowby though, so do it right the first time.

Ok yeah.. One of my buddies here at work pretty much had the same opinion.

really really didn't want to go through all that work, but would rather do it right the first time

Yeah itll be fine for the most part. Take it to a machine shop for a hot tank and a touch hone. Just tell them "clean her up. Shes gettin new pistons." Theyll know what to do.

ha maybe!

well i'm sure you know exactly how bad it sucks.. to complete your project, just to tear it back apart not much there after. but in the end, its worth it.

Get the block bored for what ever size piston...most go with 87mm. If you can get the stock size which is around 86.4mm then you will just need to get cylinders honed. Do not put the pistons in without honing the cylinder bores.

I did it 3 times (ask StreuB1) and I have the record for removal and install time:D . Trust me do it right the first and LAST time. A good cleaning and hone never hurt anyone. ///J.T.///
