ok so i just got my E30 and my friend said lets go out tonight, he drove my civic and i drove the E30 we found a nice long stretch of road that was always quiet. and off we went, the E30 is such a raw driving machine its unreal, the civic starts to pull on me slightly BUT when we hit 60 the E30 starts to pull on the civic by the time i hit 110 mph i was 2 car lengths infront of him, we did the same from a rolling start of 50 miles per hour this time i was 3 maybe 3.5 car lengths ahead :D so over all i have a nice fast DD civic and a gorgeously fast as stock E30 325 :D now i definaly know i made a good choice buying a bimmer. More to come i hope :D

I dont think they are buckets in the rear, just the stock seats with headrests, it is pretty unusual but I have seen a couple like that. IIRC they were optional on the M technic package.

I find this hard to believe, or your friend is bollocks at shifting.

An E30 325 'vert is a mid to low 15-second car, and so is a USDM Civic Si hatchback. A 200-hp Civic Type R should be, and is considerably faster than either car.

For those that don't have any idea about the Civic Type R, think of an RSX Type S with about 200lbs taken off.

Also, my skepticism increases, thinking about the fact that two days ago, you were beating an E30, and now you bought one?

Maybe a pic of both your cars next to each other?

Exactly. With a simple reflash, RSX-Ss hang with E36 M3s. An E30 'vert is far from that territory.

FYI i was hanging with an E36 318i the other day . NOT E30. and that was a i`ll say it again 318I not 325I. the M3 i saw a couple of days ago was an E46 i said NOTHING bout E30s just that they are cool i like them simple as if you dont agree with me then fine. my friend doesnt race alot so yes he maybe be rubbish at shifting my Type R when racing, he has only driven it twice before and everything is completely different to his 96 civic.

That's not being ruthless; that's being realistic.

the civic is fast but i wouldnt say it is that fast. My friend who drove my Type R has the older type civic so mine is completely new to him, he had a 5 minute drive down the road to get used to it. YES he may not of been driving at his full potential but after i hit 60mph and gained back my loss i just pulled and pulled.

rchellecivic
08-15-2006, 09:28 AM
Hugo answer this - HAVE YOU ever got straight into a NEW and STRANGE car and driven it to its full potential knowing where and what ALL the dials and Knobs in the car do? because i know if you can do that you are superhuman or lying that you havent had experiance with this car before..... it was NOT a serious race it was just a QUICK race to see how the civic and the bimmer would fair against eachother THAT is it. and i thought i would just share that with you.. Kay?

ur buddy sandbagged u. or cant drive one of the 2.

Hugo
08-15-2006, 09:35 AM
Then it's not really valid. You made it a point to say that the E30 fared better. To make sure this was in any way accurate, you should have done back-to-back runs switching drivers. I'm not saying that it didn't happen that way because of outside circumstances. I still believe that an E30 'vert is not quicker than a Type R. Even if it was, to win by 3.5 car lengths from 50 to 110 is not a kill, it's an all out ass-rape. So whether or not the other driver could drive the Civic to it's full potential or not, the outcome doesn't make sense, unless the E30 is modded and you don't know about it.

And BTW, a Civic isn't that strange or whatnot. It's still a good ole quick little car with a clutch, a shiftstick and a gas pedal. It's not like learning how to launch an SMG-II-equipped car at the track you know. We're talking about a rolling start where the guy had to shift twice at most.

Who cares where the knobs and dials are? Watch that tach and shift.

Power to weight ratio. Which proves my point even further : A civic weighs NOTHING.

Ok, here are the specs for the M20-B25 engine in that 'vert :

125 kW (167 hp) @ 5800
222 N·m (163 ft·lb) @ 4300

Edit : When did they stop making E30s? :confused

Generally, BMWs come out with a new sedan chassis, and the coupe follows the next year. My buddy had a 92 E36 coupe. They still made E30s in 92?

rchellecivic

is that the euro spec or US spec though.

Hugo
08-15-2006, 10:49 AM
Euro non M engines are not that different. Sometimes only a few hp difference, and then again, it has to do with the way they measure/rate it (bhp vs DIN) etc...

OK i am back from the run...did the same things as last time from a stoped start and then from a roll. maybe your right... when i drove the civic i walked my E30 maybe it was his driving i am sorry :( ... i pulled atleast 3 car lengths on him. and when we swapped and when i was driving the E30 i walked him... hes not as good driver as i suspect although this time when he drove the civic the gap was alot closer but he still lost.

Power to weight ratio.
Right..power to weight ratio, so by theory he should whoop me because my e28 weighs more then my brothers e34.

e28 1900 kilos
e34 1725 kilos

I weigh more with less hp and its a dead even race. Could you tell me again, please, what the humoungous deal about hp is?

rchellecivic

and let me also say, i have owned a civic coupe and an accord coupe. both really clean and jdm. with motor swaps. i came to the bimmer crowd because i was tired of hondas. it doesnt take a whole lot to make a honda faster than a lot of bmw's. and you can leave all the interior in and A/c attached.

Is that supposed to be a statment or a question? Just to let you know, the numbers that I gave you came straight from the ID plates of each car.

AND my brother wants me to make the point that he does NOT suck at driving...

We figure it is mainly due to the gear ratios and the fact that his car is an Auto...

ID plates generally state the GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating, which is the total amount of weight (passengers and cargo) that a car is allowed to carry.

I wouldn't call the Civic's 2800lbs NOTHING. For a FWD 4-cyl car with only 145ft-lbs of torque @ 5900rpm that's a lot of weight to pull, especially when the front end lifts off and all the weight is transferred to the rear, leaving the front wheels to struggle for any sort of traction.

An E30 cabrio (manual) weighs only about 200 lbs more, weighing in at 2988 lbs with 20 more ft-lbs of torque @ 4300rpm.

Oh and E30s were in production till 1993, particularly the Cabrio chassis which was replaced by the E36 325i Cabrio in 1994.

S2000 is absolute crap, i have driven both the "low torque" and "hi-torque" versions. they should be called "lowest torque" and "not as low torque" versions. it is such crappy engine. You do not even feel like you are moving. It was the most depressing engine expereince i've ever had. i'd honestly take a stock 325 over S2000. And the only way to make it beat and M3 is to absolutely abuse the hell out of it as if you had just stolen the car, otherwise its much slower. the one thing i was impressed with is the shifter, it has to be the shorters OEM shift throw ever, almost joystick like. Speaking of torqueless wonders, the RX8 is very similar in that regard. My friend with a 93 RX7 absolutely hates what they did with the new model. Apparently, it can't even spin the stock 225s. What happened to badass Jap cars? Everything is getting mellowed down... at least on the US shores. :(

the problem is their philosophy, they are so obsessed with pushing their redlines higher and making the highest HP/L small displacement engines that they completely overlook their torque issue. HP without torque is useless.

Shows how much you know, Mr. 'Enthusiast'. HP is DERIVED from TQ. If the car really did have such low TQ, it won't have the power to move itself from a stop. GEARING MULTIPLIES TQ, and only a few cars in the world can match the aggressive gearing of an S2000.

The reason the redline is high IS to compensate for the relatively low TQ of the car. The higher in the RPM range the TQ develops, the better it gets multiplied by gearing. Also, I have heard/seen of more S2000's breaking into the 13's stock than I have E36 M3s.

Link: North America's Fastest Production Cars (http://www.autofacts.ca/classics/fast.htm)

^ Find the E36 M3 in that list. No? Now find the S2000. Oh, and look for the 350Z while you're at it. It's there, trust me.

I have never owned an S2000, but as an enthusiast, I am ashamed by the rabid fan-boy-ism of some of you. If you could, you'd probably rather drive a badge rather than a car, if you felt it made you look 'classy'.

Here's an article I scanned for some of you:

Furthermore, who was talking about road racing. This was freeway/straight line racing, and honestly, the S2000 is a complete dog in a straight line. N/A or F/I, they're both completely slow.

No offense but isn't everything completely slow to a person who drives a car with 800+ rwhp??

No, absolutely not. I just feel like someone saying the S2000 is one of the fastest cars, is completely not true. So what it can lap a road course quick. It severely lacks any kind of usable horsepower. You have to drive the freaking thing like you stole it to make enough power to do anything.

I've driven one. The power is a complete joke (please, not comparing it to the Supra...compare it to an E36M3 with a MUCH more usable power band.)

While we're on the topic of S2000's, I've driven my cousin's extensively for long periods of time, so I'll give my humble opinion. The car is an absolute blast to drive. There are very few cars that have the "fun" factor that the S2000 gives (and while others do, it's not as high as the S2000). Every single time I drive that car, I feel like I'm driving a go-kart at a theme park, it's like you're a little kid driving a go-kart for the first time. The handling is awesome. For such a small, nimble car, even in stock trim, this car feels like it's on rails at all times.

That said, the lack of torque gets a little too annoying at times. Sometimes when I'm merging onto a freeway, I feel like I'm driving the Camry because it takes so long to accelerate from a 20 or 30mph punch merging on. I do agree that the gearing on the car is almost untouchable. It needs it. The S2000 wouldn't as quick as it is without its aggressive gearing. If I were to pick a car for my garage that I would have to throw around when I'm in the mood to feel like a kid, the S2000 would be my first choice; no car on the market today compares to its "fun" factor.

Good post....you conveyed what I was thinking exactly. It's a track car if anything but annoyingly slow.

... umm... aren't they both low 14 sec cars ?

Silverstreak got on in the high 13s with a suicide 7k rpms clutch drop IIRC. :D

that is the engine the only thing me or my friend can see is the Strut brace. and the sports exhaust the guy said it had on it. can you see any performance mods in there?

What you should do is throw on a bigger head to convert to a 2.7, complete performance exhaust from headers to muffler, a cool air intake, and a chip. That will throw you at about 210 maybe more, and then you can put on the limited slip diff. from an E36 Ti and kick some major ass.

i had a friend that did that. Man his car was fast. I think he could do like 140 in 3rd. oh.. thats a little over 110mph for those who cant convert.

Nah. Never claimed to have been. Why, how far do YOU walk away from your car when you go there? :shifty

Did you not get the point of the article? How many times did you have to defend your 800whp car in here from the fan boys that couldn't see beyond their brand/car?

Speaking of straight line: http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b138/LowVibrationsSQL/Hurricane%20Hotrods/?action=view&current=MOV02484.flv

The M has a passenger, but the S has the top down.

It's all about knowing what you want out of each and every car, if you had it. If you drive an S2000 expecting the same experience as you would in an M3, then you'll be sorely disappointed. For those that can live with such a peaky car for day to day driving, then more power to them. I know I won't be able to.

If someone offered me a choice between an E36 M3 and an S2000 to commute with everyday, then the M is my choice hands down. If the same offer was given me for a canyon blast, then my choice then would be an S, though the M is no slouch at this. It's funny seeing posts in the S forums about how they had to stop and help some poor sap who tried to keep up with them through some turns.

Here's an example: http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=409775

What I mean is each car is a tool. You wouldn't use a hammer for surgery, or a scalpel to chop wood now, would ya? Yet each one is useful in its own area, in its own right.

It's just too bad that oftentimes, the drivers are tools too...

I have 20-30 people around my car at almost all times at meets, I can't walk away from it, because people will/have taken things off the car. I have somenoe watch the car when I walk around.

I've had friends that wanted S2000's and I told them to drive one, then drive a C5 Corvette and decide. My one buddy who did buy, ended up buying the Vette, he hated the S2000.
