View Full Version : Never fired gun before, good gun ranges in ATL?

GaTechBMW

I've never before fired a gun and I would like to get out to some ranges and learn about fire arms and test some out. Does anybody have any favorites that they go to around the ATL area? And also how much does it cost? I do not have any guns so the range would need to have a selection to use, but I imagine most do. Thanks for the help

PS: I am not some fool that is trying to be a thug or something. I have a great deal of respect for guns and would like to go out to a range once before school starts, and maybe even make a purchase in the future for my home.

Have somebody take some time to teach you about gun handling and gun safety before you even go to a range.

Doctor Wha

Before you just show up at a range and ask to fire a gun, you need to take a safety class that covers proper operations, handling, and safety rules. Many local police departments have basic classes that focus on just such subjects. Check with your local PD, and if they don't have such a class, check with Cobb. I think they used to have classes like that from time to time.

+1M

In fact if you can find someone who is in Law Enforcement (be it local, county, state or federal), that would make it even better. Hell even if they are former military and have rangemaster experience would work as well. Also, decide what type of firearm you want and why. Just remember, unless properly trained stay away from handguns for home defense.

Basically stay away from someone who just "plays" around with weapons for personal use. Also, if you do decide to go to a firing range for training make sure they are State certified. Most of the time if the range sells weapons as well as rents they will try to talk you into something you do not need.

I took the "Citizens' Police Academy" course here in Douglasville a couple years ago. We got to shoot 2 different pistols (Glock 19 (I think) and a Beretta 9mm) as well as an AR-15 in both semi- and full-auto in .223 caliber. We shot another rifle, but I can't remember what it was, maybe the AR-15 in another caliber?

Anyway, the class was definitely worth it, and it was free. Call your local PD/Sherriff's office and see what they have to offer.

Every county has one of these classes. They range in time from 5 to 10 weeks and last from 2 to 3 hours per session. They are generally free and VERY well worth the time spent. Once you complete these classes then you can find more detailed training classes in areas like Home Defense, Tactical Shotgun, etc. The advanced classes are not free and generally not offered by your local law enforcement agencies.

Does any of this count?

Serious question though,
Does one need any real certification or anything? I mean, if you had a friend who was say a Navy SEAL and works in counter terrorism or whatever and you learned the safety stuff from him, would that be good enough? Lets assume this guy knows what he's doing...
I'm thinking most people learn common sense gun safety from their fathers and so on.

That can be fine, if the friend is a thorough and attentive instructor. So often these days, though, there is a distinct lack of "common sense" among the "common" people. :az

Finding certified instruction at least give you a start in knowing that the instructor has a better-than-average idea what he's talking about, and some skill in dealing with novices and students.

This is true.

It's tempting (and far too easy) to rush the process, but your skills will be better, and your appreciation of the experience more pronounced, with proper training before going to a range.

Too many accidents happen with firearms as it is, all of them avoidable. GaTechBMW, go get some training before handling any type of firearm. Then practice what you learned using a replica or training firearm, only then should you go out to a firing range and handle a live weapon.

That's interesting. A buddy of mine from my old office (who was in the Marines, no less) said that he only got very minimal rifle training, no pistol training whatsoever, and was never once issued, nor ever carried, a sidearm of any kind during his entire hitch. He had to ask me questions about the M9. :confused

No, I'm serious. I often put my money on the underdog. They have a lot less to lose, so they usually put a lot more effort into things. Think about it, if some special ops, Navy SEAL, counter-terrorist whatnot gets slapped silly by some random internet poster, he would be ruined for life. If, on the other hand, the results are reversed, such an outcome would have been expected and random internet poster actually gains respect for going toe-to-toe with special ops, Navy SEAL, counter-terrorist whatnot.

This leads me to the golden rule: never challenge someone who has nothing to lose.

Thing is Bill, that would also make that person fight even harder not to have that happen. There is no such thing as a fair fight. I've taken my share of beatings as well as given them. I don't care if someone is a grandmaster in any martial art, a golden glove boxer, or a hand to hand specialist. It all comes down to the will to win and survive, either you have it or not.

Not saying it would be a landslide, but there is a HUGE difference in confidence and experience versus bravado and overconfidence. Training also has something to do with it, with that training you learn to never underestimate anyone. I live that training daily in my job, for example just yesterday we had to apprehend a person who was quite small compared to our team. We used the same tactics and training we would use on someone twice their size. I've seen guys who weigh 100 lbs soaking wet beat the hell out of someone over twice their size. You can never tell what a person is capable of just by what they look like or what they say. Then again you can tell a lot about a person's abilities by the way they carry themselves and their eyes.

Honestly heres my side..
I only replied because the one guy wanted to learn and nobody wanted to teach him. I piped up because teaching 2 people isnt 100% harder than teaching 1 person.

My beef with you came when you had to throw in the comment about the V10, you havent met me, nor do you know me yet you take the judgement of others and run with it.. Real high class.

And I would def do a rifle or pistol dealio with you, but I dont think I trust you near enough, although i doubt your stupid, to be in a live weapon situation near by. I dont think anything more than common sense would be needed to think about the situation.

No one wanted to teach him? There are very few people on this forum who are actually qualified to conduct any type of firearms training. It takes more than common sense to handle a firearm properly.

No I haven't met you and from what I gather neither has a majority of the people on these boards. I have been on here long enough to know when someone is blowing smoke out their ass to gain attention though. As far as having class goes, you are the one who resorted to name calling before I, so Pot meet kettle.

Your last "paragraph" just makes me laugh. I practice live fire on a daily basis. If you want to play I can always arrange for you to sit in as one of our hostages or bad guys you take the pick, although the bad guys are usually pnuematic actuated pop-up targets. My team and I will watch you cream your pants as rounds are flying around your head. Just to prove how much trust my team & I have for each other and the skill it takes to pull off HRT & CT work we all take turns playing hostages in these live fire scenarios.

Once again firearms training, especially good real firearms training, takes a LOT more than just common sense into the equation.

Once again, I didn't say none, I said very few. I think there are maybe 5, maybe 10 in the GA section qualified to train someone in the use of a firearm. I've met a few more in OT as well.

It takes more than owning a firearm to be qualified, unfortunately most people think that just owning a firearm and going to the range makes them qualified to train others. It also takes more than just being in the military and going through basic firearms instruction to be a qualified firearms instructor. When I went to sniper school it was taught by the best snipers on active duty and even a few retired snipers who in their time were at the top of the game. I learned from their experiences, both good & bad. When I went through BUD/s, damn that was almost 20 yrs ago now, Phase 3 weapons training was taught not only by the best SEALs there ever were, Dennis Chalker being one of them, but also by the best civilian firearms instructors.

All that being said, some buddy teaching other buddies how to handle a fiearm just because the first buddy has owned them all their life scares the living shit out of me. The cycle of firearm safety and operation ignorance is just perpetuating itself like Alabama incest.

Don't post much here (new), but you can come shooting with me anytime. I am a member of River Bend Gun Club (http://www.rbgc.org/), in Dawson county. I shoot with and am captain of the GSSA (http://www.gssa.com/) service rifle team. I am a Distinguished Rifleman (http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/Distinguished_History.pdf) (badge number 1714), range safety officer, and have been invited by the Army to become a squad designated marksmanship instructor (don't have the time to attend the school this year). GA has some of the best shooters in the country, and is also home to the US Army Marksmanship Unit, at Ft. Benning, who are argueably the best shooters in the world (i'm not in their league but shoot with them often).

River Bend is a private range, but you can shoot as my guest (you don't have to be a member to attend clinics or competitions). This offer also goes to any other GA bfc members who are interested in shooting, especially those who are interested in service rifle competition. We are always looking for new shooters, and try to help them as much as possible.

Yep, plus the $500 "initiation," fee, and having to be voted in (the by-laws make interesting reading). :cashwalle

jawjatek

When I joined, the init fee was only 100. It was raised to try to slow down new memberships, as we are reaching the limit. Hell, if every member showed up on the same day, it would be really crowded! To me it is worth it having a world-class facility to practice, plus it is located 14 miles from my house. I can practice before work, and shoot out to 600 yards. I know of no other range in the state where you can do that. :D

A lot of members are there for a specific discipline, such as highpower rifle, muzzleloading comp, buffalo rifles, silhouette, bullseye and tactical pistol, shotgun games, trap, sporting clays, etc, or "cowboy action" which is getting so popular they are building a whole "cowboy town" complete with clubhouse for that crowd (we call them the "Village People" since they dress in cowboy outfits, and refer to the town as "Brokeback Mountain" LOL - just kidding!). Us highpower rifle shooters are way down on the list of club priorities. Members include Gov Perdue, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Barr, atty gen Thurbert Baker, and other Ga luminaries. It is not exclusive, you don't have to be "voted" in - we sign all applications at the range safety tour for new members; the signature requirement is just to make sure new members attend the range safety tour, and all who do get their application signed. You do not have to be a member to attend scheduled events or competitions.

It is a very safe place to shoot, the people are very nice. The highpower crowd is a really fun bunch of folks to shoot with, and relax after a match for loud talk and "aiming fluid" replenishment. We have a lot of fun at the Nationals every year, and have a reputation as a wild bunch who are fun to shoot and hang out with. :redspot

Well, it's working. I understand the reasons for fees to keep out the riff-raff, but an initiation fee that's more than the annual? With all due respect, that's stretching things a bit.

Again, with due respect, that differs from Article III, section (b) of the bylaws on the website. :ponder

Sure, anytime. PM me and I'll meet you there.

I don't think it is too much money - YMMV, but I am not a board member and don't have a say in the rules. I think it is a bargain for what you get, but I shoot a LOT and definitely get my money's worth. I've paid $2500/year hunting club dues before, now THAT was expensive.

That's certainly part of it. If I went shooting every week, there's no question it would add up to "reasonable." But for occasional use, the math starts to break down. (Of course, the more I shoot, the more I want to, but the "work" stuff has to get done some time!) ;)

Thanks again for the kind offer.

I was pretty much joking as I know this will probably not happen. I am about 100% sure Tim would show up as long as Osama was not up to no good. But online now it say my bag has been found and will delivered to my hotel between 8pm and 8am. So now Unless it gets there before 8pm, I still have to go buy clothes because I can not chance my bag not getting there during the night. This has been a shiYYT week. First my bag, now my laptop has a virus and I have to drive to Manhattan to get it reimaged. I also insulted a German girl I meet last week somehow and I am getting cursed out in German and have no clue what she is saying.
