View Full Version : E36 M3 v. Audi S4
BahnBurner 08-13-2006, 12:15 PM I was driving home from Buttonwillow after my track day yesterday and I am coming down the I-5. Everything is going smooth, I am kinda playing a around with this 300C, darting in and out of traffic, but he gets caught up and I lose him. As I am going through LA though the traffic starts to slow. We are going around 10mph or so I had to sit in traffic so I am weaving my way through it. Eventually I came up to this yellow Audi S4. It was newer and had some modifications I am pretty sure. So we are going back in forth in traffic for a while. Finally a lane opens up to my right and I jump in it. I speed up and I see the Audi follow me. We round a bend and the lane we are in is wide open, so I give it some gas and speed up more. I get up to 120 and he is on my tail (and remember this is in traffic in LA). I see the two left lanes open up some I get all the way over and pulls up next to me. There are cars ahead so I lift and he blows right by me. When I get up next to him again a give him a thumbs up and a shrug like "not much we could do." I don't know what he thought cause his windows were tinted and I could see him.
Anyway, not really a kill but it was fun. A little scary doing it in traffic though. He had more power than me though. But I wasn't going all out either. (My car is a stock 97 M2) All in all a fun way to beat the monotony of traffic. Cheers!
NickA325is 08-13-2006, 06:19 PM Nice run, was it the twin turbo v6 or the v8?
awahl63 08-13-2006, 06:20 PM Sounds like the TTV6 unchipped
NickA325is 08-13-2006, 06:25 PM Ya thats what I was thinking, those V8's are fast.
BahnBurner 08-13-2006, 08:43 PM No it was a relatively new one, probably a 04, so I think was a the V8. It was fast though. He had no probably staying with me, even if i did go all out.
Dubbedown 08-14-2006, 08:26 AM well, each s4 has a distinct body style... b5, b6 and b7. u really can't mix up the 3.
BahnBurner 08-14-2006, 10:11 AM Well it wasn't the brand new one with the huge front grill. So it was the last generation. And those have the V8.
Dubbedown 08-14-2006, 10:33 AM yea, b6 sounds right.. and wasn't questioning you but the others who suggested it was the ttv6... b/c like i said, its hard for you to mix up models so if anything, i believed your assumption =)
strayv 08-14-2006, 08:00 PM 120 in traffic in LA. Not cool. Save your speed for places where you are only risking yourself.
rick'sm3 08-14-2006, 08:13 PM it was probably chipped, my buddy has an 01 s4, when it isn't chipped and he just has an exhaust i beat him, barely, but i do, from a roll, from a stop its a different story, gotta hate that fucking all wheel drive, but chipped, he kills me, thats probably why he was so easily up your ass in that lane
TehPandaShow 08-14-2006, 09:39 PM (My car is a stock 97 M2)
WHAT? :rolleyes
I wouldn't do that again if I was you, at least not in the traffic. Some are lucky enough to make it alive and tell the story........
neeCo 08-14-2006, 09:49 PM LA traffic :nono when it comes to LA traffic i one of those 'grandma' drivers because they're always people trying to cut and try to get ahead, but always get stuck behind another slow driver :D as for the race, those S4 are no joke when modded. i recently raced the newer style S4 on Alton Pkwy in Irvine for you people who are familiar and it kept up.
Vortec4800 08-14-2006, 10:05 PM The B6/7 S4 is pretty fast indeed, nearly as fast as the E46 M3. The sound they make is pretty darn good too.

you live once.
SebsBlackBimmer 08-14-2006, 10:57 PM you live once.
uhmmmmm:shifty
What part of "you" risking other peoples lives didnt you get???
I most certainly love to race and get my blood pumping, just dont do it in traffic.

I mix them up from the front view all the time. :help
From the rear, its a different story.
B5 has single sided exhaust, B6 has left and right side single tips, while B7 has quad tips out back.
If he was up your arse, I'll wager the B6.
But I have to say :nono in traffic.

I believe the general consensus on a drag race between a b6/7 s4 v. e46 m3 is a drivers race. On a real track, I think the m3 has a huge advantage.
mmzcee 08-16-2006, 08:39 PM those b5 s4's are monsters when properly modded, ive been tempted to get one...but its no bimmer on the twisties even with quattro
Rookie mistake. Remember: once you're in front of them, the hazards go on. ;)

How so??? I've ran a B6 in the old girl and he pulled away from 140 to ~220 about 1cl and then by the time we were doing 240-250 we were even again wtih my nose slightly going ahead.
The e46 should murder a B6. Maybe from a dead stop it is but once you go triple I doubt that at all.

That actually sounds about right. The S4 will be in front at first, but once you get moving the M will catch up and pull away.
