To get an idea of what I'd be getting myself into I was purusing some rental sites, when push comes to shove I will use a realtor, but again just trying to get a feel for the different parts of the island etc. Anyway, I understand that traffic on the island can be absolute hell....would this commute actually work or would it take hours for me to get anywhere? Anyone have any comments on the Kapolei area in general?

ok, google maps won't link right :( :mad the place I was looking at was on Independence Loop in Kapolei and the office I would be in is on Bishop St in Honolulu

Plan on leaving for work @ 6 am. Oh yeah, make sure your company can get you parking.

To meet your needs of a 2bd w/ yd, that would be a townhouse. There are some available in the following areas: Manoa, Hawaii Kai, Waialae, Kuliouou, Kahala, Nuuanu and Makiki. Farthest is Hawaii Kai @ 12 miles from downtown. Closest is Nuuanu @ 1 mile.

yeah, that won't be happening, but I figured as much when I saw the map :(

Are these areas the more desirable ones that we discussed - no sun in the eyes, nice beaches etc?

I can sacrifice a bed room or a yard for better locations and/or a garage. Will definately get those names from you once I figure out when I can get to the island for a visit as well as definitive time frame for move.

@ 1 mile from work I'd probably buy a bicycle and only drive for pleasure

Those are very nice areas and are the areas in town and East Honolulu that we discussed. You will be travelling West, so no sun in the eyes!

Nuuanu, Manoa and Makiki are inland, but the beach is still within 15 minutes drive. The rest are within 5 minutes of a beach.

Closest to furthest: Nuuanu, Makiki, Manoa are all within 4 miles of downtown. Waialae, Kahala, Kuliouou and Hawaii Kai are between 7 - 12 miles from downtown. There are also intermediate areas such as Kaimuki, St. Louis Heights and Kapahulu, but I'm not sure if there are townhouses available. However, there will always be houses for rent in those areas.

ignorant question warning....how is the humidity there or asked another way can one live with moderate to no air conditioning comfortably? (analyzing overall cost of living stuff)

its not too bad.. i just got out here from IL about year and a half ago.. the humidity out here is very low compared to back home.... hawaii stays between 70-85, for a good majority of the time, at least from what I've seen and been through....

my friend had a 4 bedroom apartment with no ac... left the windows open, and had a couple fans and it was fine, no worries, never got too hot anytime I was over there

AS for the traffic thing, someone once told me this and i found it to be quite true, back in Texas if there is traffic it was a long ways to get to the destination. here in hawaii there maybe more traffic, but your not goin' far. so it kinda equals out in a way.

As Beastie said, from the West side (Aiea, Pearl City, Kapolei) you will be travelling with the sun in your eyes and looking at an hour or so commute to downtown. Also the mix of people is a bit different east from west, so you might want to rent here a while before you decide to settle someplace long-term.

Also, for some reason a lot of people overlook the windward side of Kailua and Kaneohe, which personally, are areas I really like.

As far as weather, hey its' Hawaii its' quite nice all year round, but I would definitely have AC as an option. It will probably be on only in summer, but when its needed, its REALLY needed.

I agree with Island, take a look at Kailua and Kaneohe. Some of my friends live out there and it is only like a 20 minute commute if you leave early (6:30am).

I live waaaaaay in the back of Hawaii Kai and if I leave at 6:30-7:00 it is only 30 minutes, shave off 10 if you live by Beastie.

Also, no AC in my house. Don't really ever need it. Maybe 1 or 2 days you would like it, but there is enough winds to cool it down.

on sale at Costco $498 :D

my take is you do need to get over here to do some recon and looksee. I hate commuting and that Kapolei to Downtown commute and back is on par with any traffic nightmare I've been in. absolutely hell. I would go postal if had to do it every day. so, for your sanity I would advise against unless you have flex hours to avoid it. you'll learn about a proposed light rail system, ferry boats, expanded carpool/zipper lane schemes but nothing solid yet other than a short freeway expansion which somehow did materialize recently. they paved paradise and put up a parking lot applies to our "interstate highway".

all the close in suggested areas are very nice. or I would rent in downtown / Aloha Tower / Ala Moana area. the beach would be right at your feet or very close by :) you coming to Hawaii to live afterall and not to sit in your car stuck in traffic. do you like the water? hiking? art scene/nightlife? shopping? foodie? other things to consider when choosing where to live.

that said, too bad you're not here already. tonight is night snorkeling at H-bay and I got an extra dive light!

Listening to the traffic report on the way to work, 9 out of every 10 traffic problems (stalls, accidents, deer encounters) happen WEST of Red Hill. And Hawaii has the most rubbery necks in the nation. Add to that the entire central, leeward, and "second city" west Oahu population get crammed into the H-1/H-2 merge every day.

If you're planning on staying with D&T for a while, the Executive Centre building is super convenient. There's non-assigned structure parking and D&T is literally 60 seconds walking distance. We lived there a few years, and the only form of transportation I ever used was a scooter. Units are tiny though, so you're trading convenience for space.

I concur with IslandS52 about Pearl City. PC has gone down the tubes in the past 2 decades. Everybody wants to be a gangsta. Aiea seems to be going down that path too.

In my opinion, stay east of Moanalua if possible. We're toying with the idea of moving.

rock on

You can also try Harbor Court. Nice and spacious with 2 parking stalls. Too bad I don't have that place anymore. I think rent is probably @ $3k in that bldg.

ok...here's my $0.06 on living on the east side...

while I do enjoy living in East Honolulu (I'm halfway between beastie and Kahala) in the past year traffic has gotten bad. Not nearly as bad as the westside commute from Kapolei (cuz holy crap that's alllll the way on the opposite side of the island from downtown with a ton more people) but ever since they put up all those townhouses in Hawaii Kai it just made it pretty bad. It'll take you maybe 35-45 minutes from where I am if you leave late (7:15). I personally cannot stand traffic (heat from motorcycle exhaust burns legs) so I used to leave at 6:45 or so to get to work in town, arriving at 7-7:15, depending on the number of morons on the road that day. It's quite nice to not have any sun in your eyes going to and coming from work, though. Beaches here are also less crowded and within walking distance.

On the east side everything is more open, as in the houses aren't all scrunched up together, and the roads are much wider than other areas. It's more of a rich and older population, though I am of neither one. If you want convenience, Nu'uanu is a great place that's close to everything, but pricy and wet (just like Manoa). Demographics also is very different compared to the west side, though we still have our share off assholes. As Confusious said, he who has money, may still have shit for brains.

The windward side (Kaneohe, Kailua) is a great place to be, though I am not a fan of driving the Pali or Likelike Hwys everyday. I have a tendency to drive a bit fast, and there's usually cops there on the lookout for speeders.

I guess it just really boils down to what size place you're looking for, and how much you're willing to spend/drive.

Oh, and as for a/c? I've lived here for 18 years and we've never had a/c. Yes, it can get hot and humid at times, but that's when you just go out in the backyard under the mango tree and just cruise for a while while the tradewinds blow (hopefully). Or just head down to the closest McDonalds and get an ice cream cone. :) When I was in Maryland two years ago, right before I left it was 95 degrees with 99% humidity. It's never gotten that bad here.

rock on

This is about the best advice.
However, too far East where Astroboy, Rennwerkes, and I live can also be frustrating at times. The only thing we got going is a nice coastal drive with multiple curves, which makes going to work and coming home a little rewarding.

BTW - Welcome to the middle of the Pacific where everything costs more!

bimbum

Aiea seems to be going down that path too.

why do you say that? I haven't noticed. I think is the opposite since home prices have accelerated so, nothing but "yuppie" families and more well to do moving in. kids will be kids sure, I was once one of them here too but to me hasn't changed much, we got the 2 baseball fields, the nice big outdoor pool, Times Roast Beef Tuesdays and Steak plate on Thursdays etc. :) 'Aiea is a nice community still. Up the heights very quiet, killer views and one of the best hiking trails and revered heiau. my neighbors are like family to me. :santa :drink1 :round :biglaughc :drink2 :coolcard whoa new smileys!

IslandS62
08-13-2006, 03:09 PM
In fairness though, you live in a near gated community and I live on one of the higher end streets. I have seen the neighborhood crime increase dramatically in Aiea, and the houses are going downhill as they get older (like in any older 'hood). The news of cab drivers getting shot at Pearlridge and gunpoint robberies at the local Subway ( all in the past 14 days) are becoming too common. Pearl City is completely out of control...Anna and I are really contemplating getting out of here soon.

I live in Hawaii Kai, and find that leaving by 6:20 is usually good enough to get me into the office downtown by no later than 7:00. During the summer when all of the schools are out, you can leave 10 or 15 minutes later than that. A couple of good things about living on the east side - you're not driving in to the sun morning and evening, and on your way home, once you pass Punahou Street, it's pretty smooth sailing most of the time. No matter where you live, it's always a good idea to listen to a radio station that has traffic updates. The updates have saved me some serious time on a number of occasions. Regarding a/c, you'll find that a large number of houses and condos here have neither heat nor a/c because you generally don't need them.

I recently moved back to the east Honolulu area and am enjoying the morning and afternoon commutes.

Example: I start work at 545am, driving from the Waikele/Waipahu area which is west of Moanalua, there was already lots of traffic on the road. Now I wake up later and leave later to meet that 545am start time but the traffic volume has diminished to almost nothing comparatively. Afternoon drives are a breeze also. Again I'll say that its good to be back in town.

Ok there is only one option for you, in my opinion.

What would be better than getting up and looking forward to your morning commute?

Between the crowded mess of "town" and the serene tranquil beauty of Kailua lies the Ko'olau Mountain range and the famous Pail Highway. Not only is the Pali a beautiful drive but you will get to stretch the legs of your M Coupe around the tight bending curves nearing the Pali tunnels. In addition, the Pali becomes Bishop Street and takes you right to your parking structure for work. You save a ton of time but not having to navigate through any traffic.

Traffic is fairly light any time of the day with the exception of backing up around Kam Highway right at the base of the mountain...but it's not bad at all. In addition, there are two other option of getting into town (Likelike and H-3). I take the H-3 frequently and there are times that I have driven it not seeing one other car on the road the entire 15 mile stretch. No joke.

Plus, living in Kailua is fantastic. Just search the net and you will see :D

um, yes that would be really helpful as it will be me (female) my dog (15 pounds) and my M coupe (most kick as$ of us all). working with a realtor should keep me out of the shadier areas, I hope. Although pretty sure sex offender data bases are public knowledge with the right search.

General and car based. It is run by an import speed shop and I hear one of the moderators is a real dickhead. :D Whatever you do, do not say you are a female in the gen chat section. Your PM box is gonna fill up real fast! :biglaughb

I drive to Harbor Court downtown from either Pearlridge or Kaneohe at 7:00 AM. Kaneohe takes about 25 min and Pearlridge takes about 35 min.

Kids from the West side leave at 5:30 am to find parking at UH. Once they find a stall, they sleep in their car until their class starts. Kids at the private schools leave @ 6 am or so and also need to find a parking space.

Maybe the nerds. I would get up about 7:45 and time my arrival to the parking zones that open up on Punahou St. at 8:30. I don't know anyone at UH that got up at 5:30am to go to school. Even at 8:00 there was still structure parking....but of course this was just a few years ago...and not like I went to whole lot of classes.

I can believe it...a coworker used to have to leave around 5:30 from Ewa Beach so that he could make it into town in about an hour. He would sleep in his car before work started. He told me if he left at 6 it'll take nearly 2 hours to get to work. And town is a bit closer than UH...

As for UH, all I can remember was the last two years...the rest is a blur. However I do remember carpooling with my sister when I first started going there, and sometimes finding parking in the structure can be a pain. In 5 days 50,000 students will hit the road...

yeah, you know traffic is an issue when it makes newspaper headlines :(

I had a bad commute here going over the george washington bridge everyday from NJ into NY, so I would just leave early and go to the gym by work.

No Difference. Going home is another story though. I can get to kaneohe in less than 30 min but getting Pearlridge at the same time takes an hour plus. I've even made it to Kaneohe to pick up my mail then to PR on H3 faster than my GF made it from Liliha to PR.

speaking of the H3, I don't think I've ever got stuck in traffic going either way. There have been slow times (~45-50mph) but never slowing down to a crawl. Then again, it's been a while since I've been on it...

The roady will probably hit the road to someone elses garage by the end of this week. He called today and said the loan went through, so I don't expect it to be here much longer.

As for traffic, take Beastie's advice or you will regret it later when you are sitting in traffic and late for work.

What a bummer, the Z community will miss you :( What will you autocross this weekend instead?

As for traffic, :( I believe it and will heed all warnings. If I didn't need to work life would be so much simpler :D

It's just something about being the underdog.
It's like playing football, when you get to knock down someone much larger/heavier than you. You know it's such a rewarding feeling that you were able to accomplish that and not get hurt. Of course there are more times when you get knocked down, but you forget about those when you make a giant fall! :buttrock Ohhhhh Yeeaaah!

No not a bummer, it was a bimmer! :D Sorry couldn't resist!
As 99M said, I have a 91 318is I use as my daily driver and track car. It's good and gas and can run with most of the cars on the track. It has a large trunk, a/c, and seats 4. Plus it looks so spank'n nice with a custom paint job by nature...read paint peeling off! I can park it anywhere and not worry, although others may worry when they see my car and license plate...HMAJNG!

When they fall it's a Katoosh, when you hit them and YOU bounce off it's a Katink!
