View Full Version : What do you drive in the winter?
cong13 08-11-2006, 07:30 AM So fellow drivers....
Do you put your BMW away for the winter?
What do you drive when the snow is pounding the pavement?
NYCMPOWER 08-11-2006, 08:15 AM 95 Subaru Legacy AWD
06' F150 4x4 4.10 LSD Rear makes for some great drifting

cong13 08-11-2006, 01:00 PM I know that with the 50/50 weight ratio and a full set of good snows, my car should handle well in the snow. I am more worried about getting hit by some idiot who doesn’t know how to drive in bad weather :(
I miss not having a 4 wheel drive truck and have been thinking about getting an old beater SUV or truck for the winter and giving the bimmer a break…
gbelton 08-11-2006, 01:44 PM I drive my car year around. That's what it's made for right?
BMW since 1999 and haven't had a single concern if or when I drive my BMWs on the hard pavement. Throw on some snows and it's all good.

I had a lot of people tell me it was a bad idea to drive my 328 in the winter, well once I had my snow tires everything was perfect.
Don't be an idiot and your car will do fine. As for the other idiots on the road... well not much you can do about that. They're always there no matter what you do. :rolleyes

Gregg 08-11-2006, 07:30 PM If there is snow on the road or if it's coming while I am out then my '04 Grand Cherokee 4X4 which is lifted with Goodyear MTR's. If it's just cold then the M3.
93bmw325is 08-11-2006, 07:40 PM i drive my bmw in the snow and my truck when im hauling stuff
hunterd557 08-11-2006, 10:05 PM This is my first year with my BMW and the snow hasn't fallen yet, but I think I'll most likely be driving her this year. I DO, however, have a 89 Celica that I can tool around in, but it's in need of brake repair before it's streetable.

bmxcm 08-14-2006, 11:48 AM alright unless u don't give 2 shits about ur car having a beater is the best situation ever. its much more relaxing driving a car u don't care about in bad weather, plus u can have more fun! (i.e. ebrake drifting in my 95 protoge)
M3/4 LIFE 08-15-2006, 11:39 PM wow ... are we really talking about winter already. that sux.

M3/4 LIFE 08-16-2006, 08:08 AM sure they do! You just gotta have the right kinda boosted beast for the weather. ;)
I stand corrected!!!! I forgot what lies in your stable!
TeamStowell 08-16-2006, 10:00 AM We put Blizzaks on both the M3 and 540 and face whatever upstate NY can throw at us.... never had an issue.
stews328i 08-18-2006, 05:54 PM My 328i on all seasons. If it's bad I just won't drive. I thought about getting a set of studded Pirelli Carvers but I'm retired so I don't have to be anywhere that I have to drive in snow.

roaminbmw 08-19-2006, 02:13 PM retired the 86' e30 beater, bought the wife 02' 3.0 A4, using her 98' civic as the commuter now, the 97' M is the baby, the 97' chevy 1500 pickup is for the weekend trips to home depot, 95' ducati montster is under construction, 91' FZR keeps on going.
I need more room....another baby on the way.
oh back to the question, when there was a chance of snow fall, the pickup was used, this year we get try out the A4 as a choice, or as the wife says the new family car.
Snidely Whiplas 08-21-2006, 11:26 PM 95 Subaru Legacy AWD
Nice!! I just recently picked up a '96 Legacy AWD to be used as a winter beater.
The past three winters I've run Blizzaks on my 525 and 540 and have had no problems in the snow. The 5ers are very capable with their DSC+T and a good set of Blizzaks.
My wif'es car (an '02 325xiT) is also a great winter car. The Hill Descent Control is a nice feature especially given the fairly steep hill that I live on!
Like someone else said, I worry more about the other idiots who forget how to drive in snow.
The 540 will still come out on the nicer days, but the Legacy is for crap-ass snow days following plow trucks on the highway on the way to work etc.
rmani 08-22-2006, 12:25 AM I drive my Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I don't ever store the M3. I try to drive it once and a while in the winter just as long as there isn't snow or excessive amounts of salt and sand on the pavement.:)
