An offbeat idea to the BBQ tangent would be Mongonlian BBQ at 95th and Quivira. The businees to the east has closed so there is parking for probably a hundred cars. I think we should do Stonewall when the weather cools a little so we could take advantage of the great outdoor patio. Parking is limited here also due to construction.

I've also wondered about doing a tech session and BBQ on the deck/grill at someones house type of thing.

Not sure if that's possible/wise to do or not.. considering it'd be a "pitch in" for the food and cook it there.. or a pot luck kinda thing.

I've considered the idea at my house a few times... I can probably fit 12 cars or more on my driveway and if it's dry, some can be in the grass.

Just something to think about...

I totally agree. Fall is my busy season, but it's also when I have better funds to play around too.

A fender rolling session would be great, or any other quickie mods like changing an exhaust or medium task like do a drop/suspension.

I've updated the first post with an Upcoming Events section as well.

Bengal/Siberian mix, Blane. But absofukin' loveable in a deadly, super predator sort of way. It's nice that while building the rest of the enclosures I can go lie down beside the bars and one will come over and lay down next to me and let me rub his chin and ears in that cat-way. Inevetably, another brother has to come over for attention as well.

I'm always looking for manpower (womanpower, too) on Saturdays, especially on large projects I'm pushing through like the enclosures and habitat. Even one spare set of hands makes a big difference. Bloody stumps to distract the cats.

I thought something about them was different than a full Bengal. It's like their face is not as fluffy/broad as a pure Bengal.

I take it this is not a petting zoo? IE, outsiders not allowed to touch the kitties, whatsoever?

So do you project a dominant role to the cats? IE you are the Alpha cat and they are Beta, Delta, Gamma... just like you must be with dogs?

I'm the silverback.

The larger male cats tend to react to me that way and many have reared up at me while I'm in cleaning cages (a paw swipe from a 600lb cat packs a whallop). The problem is I'm still taller than they are when standing and that's grounds for challenging social heirarchy.

Sometimes I'll play into it, grabbing their paws or letting them swipe me and just taking it without giving in. I think it also bugs them that I can stand upright longer than they can. I also hold eye contact which is a MASSIVE challenge. But in the end, when I feed or brush them they're mellow as can be. Never trust one, tho.

With the cubs, it's mainly that I've been a provider for them since they were born. A few of us have. I spent the most time playing with them since they quickly outgrew everyone else at the park. (here's a pic at 6mos. with my ex who's about 5'8")

http://www.steveklein.cc/images/bnc1.jpg

Really, it's that I've spent a lot of bonding time with them. Like I said earlier, when I take a break I'll just hang out with them for a while as if I'm one of the gang. It's odd, but I project that mentally about every part of my bearing as well. Just as with the larger cats I don't show any fear or intimidation.

Leonard is the oldest male and if you turn your back and walk away he'll roar full tilt. After the first two times made me jump, I changed my response to a mellow 'What?' as I turn back to face him. Letting him know I'm not afraid but not angry either. And body language is key. Most times I'll turn half to the side and ease away from them to avoid arousing their aggressive responses. If I'm crouched and rubbing one on the nose, it may be content as hell, but if I just stand straight up abruptly they can get pissed off in a heartbeat.

Yeah, unfortunately it's not a petting zoo. As keepers we handle them as much as we can because we've spent years fostering a bond so we can work with/amongst them, but any of the cats would act nonchalant to lure you in and have a hold of your arm before you realized it. They still do that to me and I have to be very aware of what their mood is and what they're paying attention to in the environment so something doesn't surprise them and make them latch on to me.

Case in point: Moving a group back by the leopards where we don't have a view fence yet (stupid and in violation of our insurance, so I don't know why we did it) so they could see the cubs, a couple with two kids paused and was looking at Vudu who wouldn't take his eyes off the 7 year old boy

(vudu)
http://www.steveklein.cc/images/vudu10.jpg

I was guarding Brandy, the black leopard and Shelly was standing near the corn crib between Vudu and the family and as soon as the family turned to go, Vudu sprang from his pearch right up against the cage. In a split second he realized that the back of Shelly's leg was right next to an opening for his water pail and he had a hold of her right at the back of the knee.

I was 6 feet away and saw all this in slow motion. I knew he was going to pounce, but didn't realize Shelly was standing in EXACTLY the wrong spot. FORTUNATELY, he let go almost immediately and she only had four puncture wounds, but it happens just that fast.

http://www.steveklein.cc/images/vudu2.jpg

http://www.steveklein.cc/images/vudu6.jpg

And yet, because of the years I've spent talking to him, feeding him and bribing him with grass, I get moments like this:

I can only imagine just how fast those cats really are.

Sounds like it's a challenge to exert authority/domination with them.

RagnarDanskjold
08-18-2006, 12:50 PM
Yes, they are amazingly quick. Not just physically, but in temprament as well.

And actually, the challenge is to sidestep the whole dominance/authority issue since that's what gets them worked up.

This is my first AB's experience, so it isn't pure... The lil bit of Wyandotte sauce that made it on has a very cinnamon-y finish to it. My best assessment of the AB's is its a lot like Lowry's seasoning salt. Is that cumin that gives it that flavor? The gates is also good, not as biting as the AB's not as sweet as the W-dot though. Its good for fries, but I might like the sweet Gates a bit better for dipping...

I came across something that I don't think we have had as an option, ALL YOU CAN EAT BBQ!!!!!! Saloon Ranch Chop House at the Legends Mall has all you can eat BBQ ribs, beef and pork, on Tuesday nights for $18.99. We had supper there tonight and I had a BBQ beef sandwich that was pretty good. They also have a mechanical bull that you can ride for $3. Lots of video screens and they play music fairly loud. They do have some outside seating and that might be better for a group. Parking sucks, the place is so busy. There is a parking garage, maybe we could get the roof or something. If we stay until 9:30 they have karaoke, oh boy.

If I ever find the funds, I have to completely rebuild my front suspension.

CA's, ball joints, TieRods, Struts, strut bearings, springs... it's majorly shot.

Prollly a 4hr job. I've never done susp. work before.

It's so bad right now I gotta quit driving the car. :(

RagnarDanskjold

We could easily do a tech session.

I want to find a set of stock '95 M springs and get rid of my H&R OE Sports, and at the same time replace the one tie rod that I haven't, sway bar bushings and end links.

I've done the front end two times before and it's not too bad. I've got a tool to unbolt the shock from the upper spring hat as well.

Never did get my BBQ. Wound up having coffee and a muffin. Talk about disappointment. And still wading through .asp scripts.

Also, with Dean's assistance, I've changed the oil and tranny to Royal Purple products and MAN what a difference. Smoother all around and the engine feels more free to rev. I did run about 3/4 can of SeaFoam in the crank case for about five minutes holding the revs up to 3k for a bit and I'm sure that flushed out a lot of gunk.

Thanks again, Dean!

never heard of the seafoam trick.

I may have to drop my oilpan in the future to inspect the dreaded oil pump nut defect.. on M50/S50's they have been known to back out and when that happens you totally loose oil pressure.. a devastating loss if it happens on the highway.. wont' be able to notice the light and shut it off in time in most cases.

I'm rocking the RoyalPurple in my ZF. Nice smooth shifts, but it's evidently a bit thin and the LTWFW causes a very loud gear rattle noise with AC on.. UUC/Rob said there's a thicker mixture of fluids that's suppose to quiet it down quite a bit.. but I bet when it get's cold that it'll be really stiff until it warms up.

I wont be able to come in my car to the BBQ deal.. she just simply cannot be driven until I get this susp. issue resolved.. IE poop out $$$ for parts that I simply don't have at the moment to source out to right now.. all my service vehicles are begging for attention and they come first.

Mongolian BBQ aftermath check in..

slim attendance. but made it easier to have cross talk.

height of the evening was when we discovered a 7" long Preying Mantis on the 325xi front tire.

Steve was skeered and dropped his cellphone mantis prod.. :rofl

the food was good, but I'd have to say it doesnt belong on the KCBBQ list and not in the proper class to give a rating like REAL KCBBQ.

Well... I had previos plans with a nice female.. but she got sick.. soo I decided to stay home, get something done and do a little drinking since this is like my saturday because of my work schedule.. I don't like M-BBQ either.. and with the price of gas I just said screw it.

don't blame ya.

mongolian stir fry(is what they should call it) was OK, but it's def. not KCBBQ.

When I found out at the last minute what it was, I just about said screw it too! :devillook

But it's not too far from me and I rode my little 500 Honda bike out to save on gas.
Something that almost turned into a disaster at the last turn lane when I did not spot a big piece of cardboard right before the left turn light.. I hit my front brake square in the middle of it and it was OMG I'm going down.. it slid the bike about 4ft before I let off the brake and rolled over it, hit the brake again so I wouldnt ass end the car in front of me that was stopped, waiting for the left turn light to change.

I wont' go in about the biker that was ahead of me earlier that ran from a cop...

C'mon B. That fooker was HUGE! He knew we just ate, too, the way he was eyeballin' us.

Good eats, but definitely not BBQ in the sense of OMGWTFKCBBQFTMFW.

Looks like the next meet will feature out of town guest Rob for another raid on ABs.

Shit that thing was huge. Almost flew off with my phone.

I wish I could've seen the mantis. I love those things. Biggest one I've seen was about 4 inches long and I was impressed.

Unfortunately I am like 2 days behind in one class and a week behind in the other, and I have a test in each next week. So I'll pretty much be killing myself studying til next Friday. But the good news is that means Labor Day weekend I won't have anything to study for!

I think you would been very impressed with this one. I've never seen one as huge as this guy was.

I bet onlookers wondered WTF these grown men were doing crouched down around this little focker.. and then all of them squeal like little girls when the sum biatch lurched out at us.

friggin hilarious.. too bad nobody showed up with a camera :( .. he sure seemed photogenic.

I enjoyed the GTG, and food was good, but not as good as some the regular BBQ. Next time "real" meat for sure. I'll miss Spark's return, I going to Colorado that weekend.

And I just found out that we are getting Oklahoma Joe's BBQ for lunch today!!!!!!
