my dad came home today moaning that his car wasnt changing gear properly
it is a 2005 750IL he said when he hit it in 2nd gear the car was "over revving" i went with him for a spirited drive round the block and the car was hitting top revvs and wasnt changing for about 4 - 5 seconds
any suggestions
Many thanks in advance

Accelerator stuck?

Had an e30 that did something similar....quick to go up but slow to come back down. Mechanics could not figure it out....but in those days, the accelerator was cable actuated. Not sure how the '05s work.

yeah we punch the gas, the revs shoot up and it sticks at the top rev for 4 - 5 seconds, its like the car is in neutral and you have your gas to the floor and its hitting the rev limiter and wont back down

exactly what i said to him, my dad is stupid and shouts at me when i take my car in when there is a problem, he sees it as "bothering them for unessassary work" (excuse my spelling) but he wont be saying that when he over revs and blows his engine
Many thanks and best wishes

that is odd...cuz the 750 has 360hp out of the v8, and the 760 has 438hp out of the v12...not too much dif for someone who doesnt want a lot of power...at least i think 360hp is kind of a lot of power :)

he has that power but never really uses it usually he is 5mph BELOW the speed limit that is why he shouts at me if i speed :(

Sounds like the problem is in the transmission software. You definitely would want to take it to the dealer. They will probably reload the software and send you on your way. Should be a warranty item.

took it in today, they said "yep problem is blah blah blah" (i am blonde so it goes in one ear and out the other hehe) and they also tried to rip me off by selling me a 2004 320 convertible which just happened to be a 2002 car that had been totalled and rebuilt and reregistered in 2004. and heres the best bit... they had not put in another 320 2.2L engine back in ... they put a 318 1.9L engine in so i told them where to polk it :( but they had already started on my dads car so i couldnt take that back :(

ok so here goes, when i was driving it down there, it was fien for the first 5 minutes or so, and then gear changes got rough it threw me forward and then accelorated hard. i made the bmw dealer phone my dad and tell him the problem, they are replacing the whole tranny so it has to be fairly serious right?
Best wishes

If they're replacing the whole transmission, I'd say it was quite serious. But, this stealership does not sound like the kind I would want to deal with very often. And good on you for taking care of your dad's car....I wish my kids would emulate you. They probably think I'm an 'awkward old twit' as well :)

Have you gotten it back from them yet, and if so, how does it run?
