EDIT - SCROLL DOWN FOR PICS!

I just can believe how crazy this one is, its almost unbelievable. In my current car, the e33, Jesse installed a push button starter since the ignition switch was broken on the steering column and we were starting the car using a screw driver. The way that the push button starter works is that it connects 2 wires together when you hit the button and it worked great. So last week I was installing some parts onto the car and left a washer next to the ashtray. I cleaned out everything I could but this little, 2mm washer slipped into the cracks and so I didnt know it was there.

Well, after a week of driving, the washer some how perfectly positioned itself between the 2 wires while I was driving and turned the starter on! I was on a way to take some pictures of the car with my brother when all of a sudden I hear a huge grinding mechanical sound and pull over to take a look. The car was back to normal by the time I pulled over but just to be on the safe side I drove it home for a closer look since it was dark outside. The car drove perfectly and after I reached our driveway I turned it off. When I walk back outside with some flashlights the car wouldnt turn on at all. At first I thought it was the battery but everything lit up perfectly. However, I noticed that when I pressed the starter button it would set off a very small small spark next to the starter, it was almost unnoticable. So I shine the flashlight on the area and sure enough, the washer had found itself inbetween the two wires. The distance was the perfect size and now that POS $.01 washer is going to cost me a $200 starter.

I'll post up some pics of what happened when I find the camera.

Pray your flywheel is OK. That would be really bad luck if your ring gear got stripped.

You could get a junkyard starter or something man, an e30 starter doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg. Hell, you can have my old one on the cheap if you can wait a while.

what is the root cause of your problem, your ignition switch, get that fix and you won't have the problem, always get to the root cause.

Flywheel is fine, thank God. I was praying it wasnt damaged and I started the car up by rolling it and it drove perfectly. :buttrock

Its not an e30 starter, its an e36 one since I have an e36 M3 flywheel. I think I found one around me for under a $100 with 60k on it. Man, the M50 starters are a bitch to get too.

You're definitely right. I'm going to put electrical tape around the starter this time just to make sure. I found the camera so you can see how this freak accident happened.

Oh, I didn't know that. Cool. I wasn't even sure if the M3 flywheel worked with the 260... I am actually going with the same setup. With a JB aluminum flywheel. :devillook

How it looked from the driver's seat:

A closer inspection would have shown the lodged washer:
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/adeelpowers4/bad%20luck/PICT4240.jpg

After a week and a combination of turns and road bumps the washer went perfectly inbetween the 2 live wires. This is some f'd up shit.

..moral of the story; always insulate. I don't care if it's 2 +ve or -ve wires side by side this is the reason why you always insulate safely and securely. Sorry for your mishap!

Adeel, I say you buy the "Engine Start" button from the Z8. Looks a little less rigged. That would be awesome. Yeah. Do it. James Bond Style.

working on it. I was hoping to get a HFM and 3.5in K&N filter before this happened...

I've got some fun plans for this car, just need the budget.

I have been hiding in shame because I don't have a BMW... I sold all my BMWs temporarily and bought an Audi. I know, I know I'm a traitor. I will buy another BMW (E30 or E24) as soon as I get a few financial situations straight. For now I have a '96 A4 Quattro 5-speed for the daily driver and a Chevy V8 powered '86 Mazda RX-7 for my drag car (cheater slicks out back and skinnies up front). I miss my 635 though; there is a certain feeling you get from driving a classic BMW...

Stop by my place anytime I'm home. Do you still have my number? There's no insurance on the drag car so I can't really take it on the highway but you can do a launch or two down the street from my house. :D

If I start pushing now, I'll get there in about 2 weeks.

If the car runs I'll leave on wednesday for Atlanta.
