hi,

i'd like to get involved in the bmw community, aquired a 1988 325i last month and have been laboring away trying to get her running how she's meant to...getting pretty close, so it's time to stretch her legs at some autocross and similar events...

any of you who know of meets etc. in the area willing to point me in the right direction?

i'm not looking to go street racing, maybe a bit of cruising or 'spirited driving' however

would like to attend driving school/autocross/track days (probably best i approach them in that order) and meet some people, make some friends, have a good time, all that fun stuff

some pictures can be seen here -
smg.photobucket.com/albums/v345/AlarmedBread/325is/

i will take better ones once i've straightened out the front clip and fixed everything that needs fixing...

thanks!
-Chris

yeah, it was tragic.
he hooked up with a fat chick and has never been heard from again.

thanks guys!

the car was a local buy (bellevue), the PO let his kid have it (which explains the questionable 'modifications'), then he got bored of it and it sat in the garage for a few years...so wifey made him get rid of it...

sad to hear about the events coordinator....no wonder he didn't reply to my email!

i've tried to contact the bmwcca, but had no response...would it be possible to come pay my membership dues at an event? I have no creditcard...

also i'm only 19, so i can't party too hard...

waiting on a shipment of goodies!

sorry alarmed, you are the victim of so much sarcasm it hurts...

1) Adam = Mojo325is, and although he needs the "s" removed from his SN, he IS the cca events coordinator.

2) Jeremy = me = Dark Helmet = cca chapter secretary/officer/board of directors.

3) the board member on this forum was giving crap to the board appointee that was slacking off.

4) Armen = Mr Project = the guy you want to be your best friend in the world because he can fix ANYTHING.

5) armen dropped the hammer on adam for being a post-whore.

6) you are welcome to join us this sunday at the home of Tom and Vonnie Gomon... (chapter members) for our annual pool party. the same goes for all the bimmerphiles here.

7) October 5-8 is our annual fall road rally to the black hills. it is a blast, costs about $200 for 4 days for a single, ~$250 for two people. plus gas and some "on your own" meals.

8) email me using the email feature here, I'll help you get signed up.

Dark Helmet

ADRNLN_ti
08-09-2006, 11:43 PM
Actually I'm AM thinking about bringing the E30 to the SD Rally. The wife'y hates the race seats in the ti and we have nearly 40K miles on our 04 Touring. With the 4.10 diff in the E30 and weighing only 2600lbs it should have no problem setting the pace in the hills :-)

Dark Helmet
08-10-2006, 01:14 PM
Armen.. Tarun and Molly will have tourings too, I suspect. they did last year.

Sheridan, if I manage to get those Azenis 615s on the E36... it will be a close fight...

and if tarun puts those AO32s on ANYTHING... he will own everyone.

I'm currently running uber-camber as well...heehee.

ADRNLN_ti

Jer,
If we are still talking about the SDR...

My E30 still weighs at least 400lbs less than your car...and I have Azenis on my car as well :-P

If Tarun puts A032's on his car and he expects any type of performance in SD in October....it ain't going to happen. Remember, we just missed 6-8 of snow last year.

well i've hit a bit of a snag...

i was cruising along and started to smell that sweet smell of boiling coolant, then i realized, hey, i haven't installed the fog machine in my engine bay yet!

pulled over, lo and behold, missing one tstat housing plug...

i used one of the 19mm plugs on the tstat housing to bleed it, since my bleeder screw was stuck, i put it back in with a dab of blue loctite because i was afraid it would fall out, since theres about 2 threads on the thing

i plugged the hole with a bolt that didn't quite fit..and some silicone...limped home, stopping every couple minutes checking the water level

so now i can hopefully locate a suitable plug before sunday...

moral of this story? 50cent parts = death

never gets easier to look at, does it?

parts are on the way...

so is a bently manual, read the haynes pdf version also...

it seems (so i've been told!) that it will be a job made easier by pulling the whole engine/transmisison out of the car...

replace all gaskets, head bolts, clutch kit, guibo

if my head is warped...no, no, not warped...couldnt be...i have a bad feeling about this...

if its too far gone, i might just try to trade it in on another e30 i saw at a carlot last night, its a cabrio, but it'd do!

eh what am i saying, i hate green and ragtops...engineswap would be the order of the day...

its Chris, right???

your timing is just bad... most time we'd have a couple of folks more than willing to lend a hand and some tools, but armen and I are both still up to our necks in wrenching, and I've got at least a week or two left, he's got that PLUS an entire other car to reassemble...

if you need any help, Jeff Gomon, who you met (el presidente!) did a lot of work on his E30 years back... he would be a great resource... in fact, its possibly that armen and I are the only people in the hobby who HAVEN'T owned an E30 at some point...

In the E34, it was a lot easier to do with the engine still in the car. No reason to pull the motor. E30 might be different, I'm not sure. Of course, if you know you need a clutch anyway, then I guess you might as well.

its alright, don't want to impose on you guys, everyones got thier projects going on and thats how it should be! if anyone needs a hand i'd be willing to help out, don't know all the specifics but can follow instructions

the car is easy enough to work on that i can do it just from following the manual, i'll try to get everything done this weekend and have the car back together again, hopefully it'll be sorted....

does anyone have the tools to scan the computer for fault codes etc?

tried the ignition on - press accel pedal 5 times method and could not get a result

i need a TO bearing for sure, the clutch bites good, doesnt slip on the hill test, but at times the TO bearing will squeal and slip while driving, just going to replace the whole assembly and not have to mess with it again...

is it easier to pull the engine, or drop the transmission?...not looking forward to an engine pull at all...

thanks again

if you are going to be working on the engine to trouble shoot the oil and coolant issue i would recommend on pulling the engine and tranny at the same time. might not hurt to put that short shifter in at the same time since you will have the tranny out.

AlarmedBread
08-16-2006, 07:38 PM
99% sure its just in need of a planing and a head gasket...the problem went away (after tstat overheat) for a while, then came back (after plug fell out overheat) , so that points strongly to the gasket and nothing more serious *knock on wood*...

ah good thinking on a short shift...anyone have a z3 lever?

i dont want one of those super short 'notchy' ones you have to slam into gear, but a little crisper shifting would be nice

just realized that i was sent 2 right side control arms...a replacement is being sent, but with my luck, it wont be here for this weekend when i've already got the car torn apart...

nothing wants to go easy on this thing...

i was looking at these a while back, but when i foundout you have to drop the tranny to do it, said forget it...but since i'm doing it anyway...really theres nothing wrong with the stock one, but the new knob i got is about 1/2" taller than the old one....it felt pretty nice with just the tennisball ontop of the rod, so thats a pretty big drop without having to use too much force to select gears...

got some parts, including 2 right side lennor control arms, and ocap tie rods, i ordered lemforder parts, as my invoice shows....and i'm pretty sure my car has a right, and left to it...the box with other parts is not here yet, so no headgasket or clutch kit, which is what i really needed to have show up, but atleast i didnt get my head off the car and findout that those are the wrong parts too, which would have been just perfect...

Jan, who was the M3 owner?

I've got a friend picking up an uber-rare 95 daytona violet M3 from another MVC member next week.. I need to get him out to auto-x as he would like it a lot more than the big-track stuff I think...

I can relate! Definetly get him out. We are lacking in bimmer presence. At least he got the best year if he's thinking of stock class competition.

he's not "thinking" about competition much at all yet, he's just starting his last year of law school...

but the lesser "penalty" for error and the tiny, minute corrections that make such a difference are much more his style than the big-track fever for speed that really sits well with me.

Well, perhaps we'll see him out sometime. Next event is Sept 10th in Council Bluffs, IA at the IWCC Campus.

I'll make sure to keep him abreast of events...

he's going to South Dakota with us in October... Iron Mountain Road should get his mind turning...
