The trip details are at the bottom. All M'ers and BMW'ers are welcome to join us!! It should be an awesome drive thru the hilly, backroads of Austin! It should be pretty exciting and fun as an Austin local (Agent7) has some special roads for our journey.

HOUSTON People: We are planning on meeting at Katy Mills Mall (Fuddruckers Parking Lot) at 9am sharp.

DALLAS people: Contact Austin (krazyklown_12@hotmail.com) for the Dallas convoy plans.

Contact me with any questions: RoadRat@roadfly.org

The DETAILS:
Meet for Lunch:
County Line BBQ (opens at 11:30AM on Sunday)
6500 Bee Caves Rd (1/2 mile west of Hwy 360 and on the right if your going west on Bee Caves Rd.)
(512) 327-1742

The Drive (approx. 165 miles):
Turn right out of the County Line BBQ parking lot. Take Bee Cave Rd. going west for about 8 miles to Hwy 71 and go west (right) on Hwy 71.

Stay on Hwy 71W for 59 miles, which will take you into Llano. At the end of Hwy 71, you'll come to a stop sign, which is Hwy 16 in Llano.

Photo Shoot on Llano River and Rest Area Break:
Take a right on Hwy 16 for 1.2 miles into Llano and cross the Llano River Bridge. Immediately after crossing the Llano River Bridge, take a left on Legion Drive (across the street from the Llano Historical Museum). Go about 100 yards on Legion Dr. and turn left into the American Legion Parking lot and park there. There is a restaurant next door called the Llaneaux Seafood House that has public restrooms.

When leaving the American Legion parking lot, turn right on Hwy 16 and go for 20 miles. Keep a sharp eye out for a little road to the left called "Willow City Loop" (this 13 mile road has tons of photo opportunities). Turn left onto the Willow City Loop and go exactly 2 miles and pull over to the side of the road at the “Buice Rd”. street sign for our second photo shoot of the day (nice view).

After the photo shoot, continue on the Willow City Loop for 11 miles until you get into the tiny town of Willow City (at the stop sign), just continue going straight after going thru the stop sign and this road will become Hwy 1323. Take Hwy 1323 for about 22 miles to Hwy 281.

Take a left (north) onto Hwy 281 and go about 9 miles. Turn right onto 962 for go for about 7 miles. Turn left on 962 at Cypress Mill for 9 miles and you will cross the Pedernales River. After you cross the Pedernales River, the road becomes 3238 (AKA Hamilton Pool Rd.) Follow 3238 for 15 miles to Hwy 71.

Final destination for dinner not yet finalized.

He might be out of town. I emailed him on Monday and haven't heard back from him either. I imagine that he might be on vacation thru the Thanksgiving weekend and will get back to us next week. He runs the BMW Club of Dallas, so I am sure he'll get back to you/us. Give him til middle of next week.

You may also want to ask on this board for where you all are meeting in Dallas for the drive down to Austin on 12/08.

Email me if I can be of any help.

Hmmm, I dunno. Maybe so. The link he provided is an Austin yahoo forum. Maybe I am confused as his name is Austin, but I thought he was in Dallas.

In any case, can one of ya'll take the lead here and set up the caravan from Dallas to Austin?

Austin, as he is known here, does exist and he does have a web-site, www.bmwclubofdallas.com . He used to post on this board a lot but lately I haven't seen any. I haven't officially met him but I've seen him once (BMWCCA Lone Star Chapter autocross).

Thanks for the confirmation on his existence. LOL. I knew I had seen his website before. He was setting up the convoy and a number of people had already signed on. Give it some time for one of those guys to notice this thread and I am sure they will pass along the details.

RoadRat

Realistically, probably a dozen or so. There are 35 from Houston that are on our distribution list.

Are you on the list? Email me so I can add you.

We have an Austin meeting place change coming as the location we selected will be closed due to a charity event and the manager (after talking to him 3 times) just let us know.

So how many people acctually were from austin? To this day it amazes me how few bimmer people are in Austin. Sounded like a fun drive though! If I had been in town I would have called up my buddie and would could have gone in his dad's 540.

I would have to say though, that you missed a number of really cool roads. I acctually don't like 71 all that much, there is no center divider, and have seen a nuimber accidents between austin and llano, all VERY ugly looking. Taho vs. volvo both probably at 70mph in either direction...... UGLY. I had a hard time telling that it was a volvo, and it was sent flying prety far off the road.

A few roads that are more or less in austin that are cool are 2222, and if you go out by mansfied dam, and the road that goes to volente beach, are both kick-ass curvy roads. I have to say though, that here in colorado, there are many, many roads that are many many times better than all of those :D :stickoutt

Definatly sounds like it was fun though! The county line is some fine BBQ too.

after looking at the pics: yuk! sucks that it rained.
I live about 5 minutes off of hamilton pool rd. So close to my house!

does that pic show 100mph...in the RAIN?!?!? If so, you guys are insane.

Nice to see some familiar pics.

Yea, I have seen some nasty accidents on that part of 71. It all happens to the stupid drunks at night driving 100mph in the opposite lane of traffic. Down my Llano, there are some beautiful roads. That can actually be quite fun.

Where near Hamilton Pool did you live? I'm down near Briarcliff, if you remember where that is (by the Pedernalas river).

Colorado has some fun roads! When I was up there for O'fest during the summer, I saw a turn sign that said 10mph. That sign meant 10 mph too!! I took it at about 25 and had a fun time going down the switchbacks! Some of the roads are boring through the vallies that are straight for 30 miles at a time!

do you know where old Fitzhugh road is? or RR12? I am down in that direction. To get to my house, you would go down old fitzhugh rd, take a left onto fitzhugh rd, and take that for a few miles to a subdivision called big country.

There are two roads that are within 5-10 minutes of boulder that don't just have a 10mph turn, they have 5-10 10mph turns all within a few miles.......

:devillook

And then there is I-70 up in the mountains.....:devillook

That is further down Hamilton pool isn't it? I don't go very far back there, so I'm not to sure where that is.

I am prety sure the first one is the first left turn you can make on the road, which is a few miles down. RR12 is a few miles further than that. I don't normaly drive that way, I usually go into austin by going down hwy 290.

does that make sense? i've had a few drinks, it might not....

Hmm... I don't know the roads down there. I'll pull out a map later and look, but I think I know what you are talking about.

Colorado has really fun roads, plus the scenery is awesome. I am scared of the big deer though!

yea, I have seen a couple of big deer in CO, but I certainly see a lot more of them around here.
