Im looking for a good spots in Fells Point to take a chick on a first date Thursday night. Looking for a nice place to eat (doesnt have to be a dressy resteraunt), and maybe a nice place to inject alcohol into my blood stream. A coworker of mine works at cancun cantina so i might get some passes there. Also a nice place to chill by the water for some smooching action. Thanks.

you can't go wrong with pazo of course, but a little pricier, and further from the water...pazo.com

both are very trendy...pazo is 10x the size of mezze though...both are great.

I dig Pazo's.

I mean, does it have to be Fell's Point? If this is a low key kind of date, Shucker's isn't too bad (casual dining) and it is on the water. There is also DuClaw's.

You could always go with the generic McCormick and Schmicks on Pier 5. Decent food, nice ambience and on the water. Not overly dressy-just some khakis and dress shirt or polo type shirt.

Truly the best place ever for a first date. Don't look at the waitresses; not even once and your bound to get some huge brownie points.

I have been far too disappointed with the baltimore McCormick's....not worth the $ IMO...Haven't eaten at DuClaw before, but their beer and ambience is pretty nice.

I'm sticking with www.Kalismezze.com get the lima beans FTW.

BUT...to help out...some suggestions with prices from zagat.com.

“Linger over a bottle of wine” and an “endless stream” of “zesty” “Med tapas” at this “more casual” Fells Point alternative to sibling Kali’s Court that’s “cute, chic and comforting” and “where all the beautiful people are”, so “be ready for a wait”; it’s “worth trying everything”, but “your eyes might be bigger than your stomach” – and your wallet, since some say the “small plates have not-so-small prices.”

Set in a “vast” “revamped warehouse” that “feels like an old Spanish cathedral”, this “sumptuous” “Harbor East hangout” from Charleston’s Tony Foreman has locals wondering “are we still in Baltimore?”; meanwhile, “the young and beautiful” delight in “deft” Med tapas on the main floor or head to a mezzanine level “to survey the scene”, which gets increasingly “loud” and “clublike” as the night goes on; P.S. wallet-watchers warn the “small plates can add up to a big bill.”

“Nicely renovated” twin Fells Point townhouses form the setting for this “cozy” Greek seafooder that has “a winning formula”: a “market-style” icebox allows diners to “select their own fish”, which is “filleted tableside”, then “grilled to perfection” using “simple preparations”; of course, this “platonic ideal of a taverna” totals up to a “tsunami of a bill”, although most conclude it’s “worth the splurge.”

hope that helps! Let me know of a better price range and I can post some more.

Lactomaniac: If you're going to Cancun after dinner just go to BOP and work the "cozy" angle. Don't set a trend with the high dollar dinners.

Charisma: Hooters?!? And this worked for you?!? BS dectector is registering a level 10!

I am thinking of a quote here... It was something about a beach and some sand.

Oh yeah thats it: "Don't take sand to the beach!"

IMO McCormick and Schmicks in general isn't that great. I've been to a couple that have been good, like in Newport Beach, CA. The one in Philly is terrible.

For seafood in that part of town, I like Blue Sea Grille near the Power Plant.

no, I just eat out waaaaay too much. Kinda become a pro. Seriously, on that list, I would go with Mezze...but definitely make reservations, and if you want quiet/more romantic, ask to eat upstairs, if you want louder, more action, ask for downstairs. You can eat there pretty cheap if you don't get the crab cakes.

Pazo is excellent food also, just pricier, but also more dressy and will impress her more....so it can be worth the extra $20-25 plus extra tip %. I can typically be found in the seats behind the bar (they have four seats behind the bar downstairs that people rarely take)...no reservation needed FTW. Otherwise, make pazo res. at least a week in advance...only downside is they have a lot of tables for two that are in a row....so much less privacy. That's why the downstairs back bar is so nice.

Black olive is good, but way overpriced IMO...no need to bling that much, but threw it in there.

BS Grill is good, but I have had some really shady tuna there. My theory about the "Big Steaks Mgmt." group (own both Ruth's Chris, blue sea grill, babalu grill, havana club, etc.) is that Ruth's Chris gets the choice delivery, then the second best looking fish goes to blue sea, then the rest to babalu (where they use so much seasoning that you can't tell good from bad)

I have had some good experiences at the Oceannaire here, I recommend eating at the oyster bar for good service...that's prob. my fav seafood in the area.

And for federal hill...two words- "The Bicycle"

oh, and to stay in regional, I recommend you do NOT drive your MARB after drinking out. Yellow cab 410 685-1212 i think.

Ugh... *shudder* The Bicycle has been positively terrible both times I've been there. Way too cramped, tables too close together, and WAY overpriced for what you get. I paid more than Brass Elephant prices for a very very mediocre (but properly cooked) 8oz filet, overcooked asparagus and crappy service. The ambiance is "ok" but given that every table was one foot away from the next, it was definitely not worth it. Possibly the most overrated restaurant in Baltimore.

call restaurant, make reservation, request a "private table"...problem solved in most cases.

I mostly use opentable.com...so I just have "Request for private table if possible" saved into my comments page. Every time I have been, they have a intimate table reserved for us.

They also are under new management (and new chef) as of about last month...and I have found them to be EXTREMELY accomodating for that request...maybe give it another try? :dunno The menu has remained 90% the same though.

Oh, and get the tuna tartar and the lobster ravioli appetizers...IMO some of the best food in baltimore.

Works at most places except pazo and the like where pretty much nothing is private. Give it a try....I HATE those close tables for two also....I feel like I can't say a damn thing. I am a very private person and don't like being overheard either.

At the moment, I would say the most overrated restaurant in Bmore is unfortunately Charleston. It used to be fabulous! Then Cindy and Tony (chef/owners) changed the menu to prix fixe and got rid of Tom the sommelier. He was the one of best sommelier' I have ever encountered....it just isn't the same anymore IMO.

Dave-

You need to try this restaurant that I went to back in December: "Abacrombie"

I think you'd like it a lot.

We haven't been in over a year... I'm not too motivated to go back. Too many other places that have gone out of their way to be really good to us.

Maybe if we're not celebrating something we'll head there.

That's fair. Same w/ me for Louisiana...had a terrible service experience, prob. never be back. I know what you mean.:)

Anyone been to Helen's Garden in Canton? Been meaning to go there for months...never have yet. Any opinions?

I've never had a problem with service at Louisiana, very intimate. Maybe a little more upscale than you are looking for, but the food is amazing.
