I'm new in this forum and a relatively new BMW owner also.

How does one replace the bulb on the rear license plate light? (2002 525i). The manual says to insert a screwdriver and push to the left. I've done this and it moves to the left a little. What then? I can't access the compartment where the bulb is.

This topic is a little old but I am having the same problem. The black piece won't budge much and I don't want to put excessive force and break the little guy!

once it slides to one side, pull down.

Yes, you gotta slide to one side and pull it down with the flat screwdriver
still in the slot. It needs to be pulled hard. It will come off.

Ohh, I got it. I was sliding the unit to the left but you need to slide the unit to the right and pull up from the left side.

There is a small metal clip on the right that compresses so that there is room for the left side to come out.
