View Full Version : front tags in OR. anybody been nailed?
drsides 07-28-2006, 12:50 PM so i have front tags for my 98 m3/4, but i have not put them on yet, so far just because of procrastination.
But in general, i was wondering if any cops in the metro ever really nail folks for no front tags. Specifically, I'm in Beaverton.
From talking with a buddy who used to be a Wash Co. deputy, i get the feeling that it's not really something that they would stop you for... but if they happen to pull you over for speeding, then they might tack on a tag related charge too.
do ya'll agree? disagree?
DakarBurch 07-28-2006, 08:39 PM i dont even have front plates and haven't been pulled
dem3n 07-28-2006, 11:05 PM But you most definately can. I think all oregon requires that you have tags and plates in the front. I know I"ve been hit with that weak ass ticket near Corvallis. But, if you put it on for the judge on the court date they'll usually drop it.
SiGmA 07-30-2006, 02:57 AM I do not have front plates and have never had a problem. I live in Lake Oswego, at that.
been running either a euro plate or no plate at all for over 7 months with no issue. Then agian I drive a burgendy e30 so who knows....
808M3 08-04-2006, 12:41 AM been nailed by a washington county sheriff on jenkins and murray right by Nike. He pulled me over for not having a front plate on the car ticket was about 90 bucks. I guess I'm unlucky!
drsides 08-04-2006, 01:02 PM WOW! i am amazed that someone was actually nailed for this. This is the first time that i hthink i've heard of it happening.
But... i gotta say... the risk of $90 is not a real incentive to put one on. I mean, how much does a front license plate bracket for a bmw cost? maybe $30-40? So you hafta spend >$30 and take the time to put it on and mess up the looks of your car.... all to protect yourself against the risk of a $90 ticket.
In addition, I know that putting a front plate on makes frontal laser speed detection a little easier because it gives the nice officer something to aim at and bounce the laser off of.
And i dont think that a license plate infraction makes your insurance go up, right? So the only thing that you are protecting yourself from is the $90 ticket.
Think i will take my chances.

dem3n 08-05-2006, 09:19 PM Not having your license plate on is just another reason cops have to pull you over. But f-it, I still roll without it right now. I've been rolled with my EURO plate before as well. I think its just best to not put anything on the front at all.
waferman 08-05-2006, 09:26 PM Im in Hillsboro- I've never been pulled because of it. Just keep it handy under the front seat so you can use the excuse that you were about to put it on:cool

heiman5 08-06-2006, 03:21 PM i dont have one in the front... i just keep it in the trunk and will say it fell off. idk off since feb and never stopped.
also: one of my friends told me that you can be "stopped" for no front plate but can get an additional ticket for it if your get pulled over for something else
rafale 08-06-2006, 09:19 PM I never had one in the front of my Z3. The Oregon law says that you have to have the plate unless you cannot put it on. My Z3 did not have the fixtures to hold the plate. Only the screw holes to hold the fixture. I never got nailed in 3 years... even when I got pulled over.
m3steve 08-07-2006, 05:57 AM Put a license plate delete strip on the front, if you get pulled over, just tell them when you bought the car that there was no spot for it. Been pulled over twice for it, in the same spot, and actually believe it or not, by the same cop about 3 weeks after he first pulled me over. The second time, he leaned in my car, and goes,
" oh, i thought I recognized your car " and I was like, yeah, I haven't had any time to get it fixed" he said, "ya, its not that big of a deal, you might find that some cops give you a harder time about it " then he goes " you haven't shot anyone or gotten a warrant since the last time I pulled you over did you? " I laughed and said no, he handed me back my license, and told me to have a nice day.........
m3steve 08-07-2006, 06:00 AM oh, ya and one more thing................Hes a WSP, and his name was Trooper Dangle..............i wanted to laugh, but his gun kept me silent.....
WestCoastin 08-09-2006, 04:30 PM My buddy in an E46 got a parking ticket for being in a park past closing in Portland and the cop wrote an additional ticket for no front plate. I think it was pretty pricey, like about $90 like 808M3 said.
hadboosttroy 08-13-2006, 11:22 PM they can't give you a ticket for no front plate if you aren't moving. i am pretty sure it is a "moving" violation. I am assuming this because my brother had no front plate on his car, and while it was parked on the street, a cop wrote a warning and put it on his car. no ticket though.

I think your bro got off relatively easy, cause the cop that wrote us tickets (I got one too, but just for parking there, I have a front plate) was a jerk. I saw my friend's ticket when we came back to our cars. It could have been because he was a real cop (I saw him as we were walking back) and not a parking lady.
On a side note, this cop was a dick because instead lifting up our windshield wipers to stick the ticket under it, he just licked the envelope and stuck it on the windshield, effectively gluing it down. Had to drive around with sticker crap on my windshield for the rest of the night. How hard is it to lift the wiper?
drsides 08-14-2006, 08:04 PM i am pretty sure it is a "moving" violation. .
if its a moving violation, does it make your insurance go up? doesnt seem like it should...
808M3 08-15-2006, 01:47 AM Its not a true moving violation. My insurance is fine. It is just a reason to pull you over.
hadboosttroy 08-15-2006, 01:52 AM Its not a true moving violation. My insurance is fine. It is just a reason to pull you over.
yeah, insurance is fine, no worries.
to the earlier poster, yeah that cop sounds like a jerk. the whole envelope thing is way out of line.
you def. can get the ticket i got 3 times gresham to west linn and everytime i just use 2 sided tape to stick it on toke a pic and toke the pic to court and gotr it dropped. but if you drive around w/ anything "illegal" alot you may want to put that bad boy up there. and as for the laser needing a plate to bounce off, it doesnt laser will get anyway. but front plates are ugly so f-it
darkpoeticken 08-15-2006, 10:37 AM I got the ticket downtown on the Burnside bridge. They were obviously just out throwing tickets at everything that moved that night, so I was able to get it dismissed when I showed them a picture of the plate on the car.
My friend got a ticket for the same thing and ended up actually having to pay it. He was also on Burnside.
The moral of the story is that Burnside is the place for this.

From the looks of your Z3 there, it looks like they should nail you for not having plates on the back of your car too...
I got pulled over by a Tigard motorcycle cop for no front plate. Nice enough guy, but what a waste of taxpayers money! I've had a euro tag on for years, and this is the first time I got stopped. The fine was dismissed when I showed the picture of the Oregon tag on the car (hanging beneath the euro tag).
drsides 09-19-2006, 04:44 PM I just got nailed 10 minutes ago by WashCo Sheriff for no front plates. Lucky for me that I was going the speed limit (25 in a 25) as he was on speeder patrol.
So to answer my own question from 2 months ago (original poster here): YES, you can and will get nailed for it.
Landerholm 09-19-2006, 07:03 PM Did you get a ticket for it? $? Sure doesnt happen often...
drsides 09-21-2006, 12:58 PM Did you get a ticket for it? $? Sure doesnt happen often...
Yup! Sure did get a ticket! Here are the details:
Where: In a school zone in Hillsboro, just north of TV Highway, and about 1 mile north of HomeDepot on TV Highway. I dont know the name of the road.
Who: WashCo Sheriff.
Conditions: He was in a speed trap looking for speeders. He nailed me for no license plate. He told me straight out that that was the only reason he pulled me over. (i was doing 25 in a 25). Point being: Its wrong to think they hafta pull you over for something else in order to give you a front license plate ticket.
Fine: I dont know the fine. I dont plan on paying it because the cop said that if i take a picture of the car with the front plate on it to court, then they will likely dismiss it.
So the bottom line is that they can nail you for it without having to pull you over for something else, but the ticket is usually waivable if you put a front plate on it.
