View Full Version : S52 Fire Rings from my head
turnerNCM3 07-26-2006, 10:10 PM I measured the old HG from my S52 at about .090 inches and these steel fire rings at .080. Based on other discoveries, the head has been worked before.
Who does this type of mod? Are the rings of any value to anyone? Got to be some precision involved...
Geno325is 07-26-2006, 10:13 PM any pics of the headgasket? BMP ?

That's all that is left of it.
hehe jk
StreuB1 07-27-2006, 10:22 AM Are those rings round in cross section???
Those look like Wills MOT rings..........if they are they are hollow tubes and charged with nitrogen.
If they are.......they are reusable.
got psi 07-27-2006, 10:30 AM If they have small ridges on one side they are probibly from a BMP sealing ring gasket. Also is the block machined with a relief for the rings? The rings are useless without the rest of the gasket unless you didn't post a pic of the gasket.///J.T.///

I guess I should have added that also. :stickoutt
If it IS machined with a relief "step" for the rings.......TAKE A PICTURE OF THE HEAD AND BLOCK areas that are machined and post!!
The MOT ring is THE best sealing methods for an engine and with the thin area between the cylinders.....its tough to do.
Id like to see how it was done.
turnerNCM3 07-27-2006, 01:43 PM The rings are cylindrical with height of about .080, not rounded/tubular
The block cylinders are not relieved for these rings to set in. I will post pics of the old HG and measure the cylinders too.

turnerNCM3 08-31-2006, 11:33 AM OK guys I stumbled upon this photo about AA in a European Car mag article online
http://www.europeancarweb.com/projectcars/0204ec_bmw_m3_turbocharger_kit/photo_06.html
Notice these rings. The rings have a thickness and "width" measuring (outside diameter - insider diameter)/2
This means that the gasket hole diameter itself must be wider that the actual cylinder bore size to allow these steel rings to nest into the gasket. The ring inside diameter = the actual cylinder bore.
Still just wondering who did this seeing it in an AA photo. Looks just like what I have.

GGray 08-31-2006, 12:40 PM Aren't those simular to the Head gasket PPF has?
I would like one for my car if they work...When I pop pistons in it in the fall...
The track whore just never seems to get finished...:D
Shuasha 08-31-2006, 01:33 PM I believe that JT (got psi) had issues with that gasket last year. It leaked after a small amount of use.

From those photos it seems you need to hone your cylinders. They seen to have scoring on them.

They are smooth but have some marking on them and lots of cross hatch still visible. Gonna have everything cleaned up real purdy
Block being torn down right now...
card counter 09-03-2006, 11:45 AM There are two types of rings sealing or cutting rings the type bmp use to sell.
Then there is the pyramid ring or fire ring the type PPF has.
The main diffrence is the fire ring has the block machined(grooved) for the ring to sit in.The cutting ring sits on the block.

That looks fimiliar.....

Boosted2003 09-03-2006, 01:30 PM Firerings or O-ringing block is good and bad. People with volvo tend to o-bring quite abit overseas (less in the US). It makes the combustion chamer almost impossible to loose air/boost. Sometimes it can hide a lifting head issue too.
Down side you dont have a headgasket to blow like a fuse. Something else will go.
card counter 09-03-2006, 01:47 PM We dont want boost to be the limiting factor.I would rather run out of turbo or fuel though I dont see ether one of these happing.
E30 2 ENVY 09-04-2006, 12:51 PM what is the little grove going from the piston bore to the outside of the block for?
it looks like it is machined into the block sufrace
Looks real good though!!!
