View Full Version : 335i performance modifications?
Hello, i'm very knew to BMW's but have previously owned a 94' twin turbo supra. my next car will probably be the 335i seeing as how i've fell in love with the looks of it. I'm looking for some kind of insight to my future performance mods.
My question now, is will this I6 twinturbo 335i be something close to the 2jz-gte motor? also, will the new 6spd tranny be similar to the supra's getrag? if the answer to both of these questions is yes, then i suspect a LOT of 335i owners to be putting BPU+++ on their cars. this would consist of your basic boost control, exhaust, fuel, intercooler, bov, etc etc. your basic "ricer" mods i guess you could say.
compression ratio on the new 335i motor is 10.2:1. supra's was something like 8.something :1. i believe stock boost was going to be around 7-8psi.
any other FI people thinking of the same thing? i was thinking FMIC, BoV, wastegates, Exhaust, Fuel, boost control, turbo timer, single turbo = 500+ hp. anyone else thinking the same? thanks in advance.

how about we make the question simpler...
with no upgraded IC and exhaust, how much do you think we'll be able to boost off those little turbos with just boost control/chip? stock supra boost was 12.5ish or something and you could daily drive it with 18psi safely. 21 was questionable but possible. i'm not a technician or anything so as simple as this question may be... i'm just wondering.
btw, i stopped by the dealership the other day to inquire about one. i'll be putting my dp probably in sept or earlier. peace

ADAM///M 07-26-2006, 01:01 PM You might want to post this on the Forced Induction section as you might get more responses...but my guess is that given the smaller size of the BMW turbo's (versus the stock Supra turbos), the gains that will be seen from bolt ons will probably be more in line with what you see from mods to the B5 Audi S4.
gtx510 08-01-2006, 02:48 PM I read Roundel or Bimmer and theysaidthe 335i was going to use a Mitsubishi-IHI turbo. That's 2 different companies and I've never heardof them working together so I wonder if that's true. Either way there's turbo upgradesfor both brands.
Won't be able to spectulate until more turbo info comes out, like size and model. HP and boost numbers will probably be determined by the stock injector sizing.
gtx510 08-03-2006, 09:07 AM One more thing. From the pics that I've seen (and the article mentioned it too) it looks like the turbine housing and exhaust manifold are one piece, ala Dodge SRT-4.
This make it a bit tougher to upgrade the turbo, especially the exhaust wheel.
chris@evosport 08-08-2006, 12:06 PM yeah i also heard the the whole turbo unit will be one piece which would make it difficult to replace and fairly expensive too, but the new 335 will definitely have a lot of potential IMO, i keep thinking itll be similar to the supra motor 3l I6 tt- let the modding begin!
M54power330Ci 08-08-2006, 12:58 PM Won't it take some time for these parts to come out? Seeing that the car dosen't come out until September. It will take time for R&D.
mose121 08-08-2006, 01:20 PM I seriously doubt the 335 will be able to handle 1000hp on the stock bottom like the supra motors. But I wouldn't be surprised if it'll hit 400-500 with no problems. Hopefully the geeks at HQ have been studying what the FI guys have been doing with the M50/M52 motors. Although you have to consider that it might be a couple years before there's much available for it aftermarket wise.

Yes it'll take some time, however the main thing this car will really need is software, the software will be the key to really unleashing this car. The car does need to be lightened up a bit though 3500lbs :( :(

I totally agree, I dont know if a stock supra bottom end can handle 1000hp right out of the box, but hey i wouldn't be surprised- they make a lot of power, now how about a 1000hp bmw motor... that's where it's at haha

There are many people that have hit 1000hp on the stock bottom in a supra. And you're totally correct about programming, that will be the key to tuning the 335.
chris@evosport 08-08-2006, 03:21 PM really 1000hp on stock internals!? I honestly had no idea that was possible, haha. Yeah the key for the 335 will be software, i mean people will add intercoolers, intakes, exhausts, and etc- but i just feel the software will be the biggest bang for the buck- boooooosssssttt what?! haha
Kevlar 08-08-2006, 03:36 PM I've been told there is already software available that will raise HP by about 50.

Wow, that's early. However I would hope tuners could do better than 50hp since 1.8T VW/Audi's get a 50hp software bump using the crappy K03 housing. Two turbines and almost double the literage...there's gotta be more than 50 hp to be had. Maybe not though, I could be missing something.

I agree there has to be more, i've also heard of audis getting ridiculous power, we'll be doing some of our own work on the 335- :D :D
Kevlar 08-08-2006, 07:27 PM I'm sure there is plenty more HP to come... the first 50 were attained based on the fact that the 335 originally came with 350hp but was downgraded to 300 based on a few unreleased factors.
