Would someone please refresh my memory? Which is the better impeller? Metal or Plastic?

TIA!

plastic? maybe on E36 or newer

Just use a metal Graf stock pump. If you want to get fancy buy one for the E30 318i M10 without the 90deg internal bend.

metal.

plastic = breaks and floats through the system.

On VWs, cast metal is better than stamped steel or plastic. Plastic ones have been known to slip on the shaft, making an overheating issue that is really hard to track down.

Metal FTW. My car was overheating because the stock impeller broke off and was just floating around and not circulating the coolant.

Definatly metal but be carefull, there are two types out there... stamped steel and cast. Cast is what you want, my '82 had a stamped steel impeller and when I replaced it I could not believe how crudded up/corroded it was.
