My 540i check engine light keeps on coming on but now, it stays put.

A friend told me on the internet to reset (jumper on terminal 1 & 7 twice for more than 10 seconds. I really do not know where the jumper on terminal is.

If this will help, can someone tell me where this is located or give me some advice.

Well reseting the light will not make the problem go away. FIrst, get the codes read and find out what is causing the problem. Then go from there.

Yes, it's not like resetting oil service light. CEL means there's something
wrong with the car.

A lot of parts stores like AutoZone will read the codes for you and tell you what the problem is, and reset it after you fix it. Until you get your own code reader, like the Peake Research tool, it's a cheap alternative. Call around.

Agreed, go to AutoZone, AdvanceAuto, etc., they'll usually read codes for free. Armed with that info., go here (http://www.my330i.com/odb2.php) to decipher what they mean. GL..

CEL is typically related to the fuel, or emissions system. Take it down to AutoZone, and they'll hook up the OBDII reader, and give you the codes for free. Has the car been running rough, or anything?

I will take the car to AutoZone for OBDII reader. The site for OBD-II Diagnostic Code provided by BMRSEB was also helpful. The engine runs great. As for my Benz, the check engine light came on one time. All I did was to disconnect the battery cable for less than a minute in order to clear the memory. I reconnect the cable & things had been OK. Could the same thing be for BMW? I never tried it because I do not have the radio code in case I disconnect & reconnect the battery & radio will not work without inputing the radio code. I may be able to get the S/N for the radio @ its back but does this worth the problem?
I just changed the engine oil and will like to reset the oil service light.
I hope this will be easy to do.
Thank you guys.

There's no radio code for E39s. All you'll lose is the time setting.
CEL may be gone for awhile, but it will come back on.

Go here (http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/sil.html)to reset the Oil Service Light.. Also, a lot of this information can be had by Googling what you're looking for and/or visiting the various BMW DIY-related sites, e.g., BMWTips.com, Bimmerdiy.com, etc..:D

Above information and attachment is very helpful but I cannot call myself an expert in fixing an auto. I can follow instruction and get it done well. The instructions are clear but my problem is where to find - connecting pin 7 to pin 19(ground).
Thank U

The diagram above is very helpful. I am definately sure that I can handle it myself. I will work on it within couple of weeks and get back to you guys.
Very unlikely that I will take it to the shop.
Thanks

Probably 3 seconds but don't forget that I have to put the jumper cable together which will take about 6 seconds [to purchase & assemble]. For expert like you (~.~), it may take 1 1/2 seconds.
Anyway, since it's not a problem to the car, I will take it easy.
Thanks for your support.
