It is a sick car. I think the wheels fit it just fine. The best part is all the people that helped in the engineering and construction of this beast. Some people must think he's crazy but I say, Money well spent!:D

Hey if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. :stickoutt

Link was working for a few days but probably is down due to heavy traffic when people found out about it a few days ago.

Somehow I think his biggest problem is going to be traction.

Just read the article last weekend and must say that I was inspired by the creativity employed to help balance the extra weight of the heavier motor.

I was hoping to discover an incredibly high power output and was a little let down that it was not making the earth shake yet. Very impressive how the drive train has been redesigned to handle all the extra power after the piston change is made. I want to see the final figures when the CR is dropped and the boost is dialed up, that thing is going to be a monster! :eyecrazy

I find it astonishing how many people still love to tweak and modify a 30 year old vehicle! Kudos to the creators of the Ultimate 2002!!! :buttrock

Have you all also read about his other masterpiece, the 3.8CSi? Paul does excellent work. He really loves Fjordmetallicblau.

No, I have not seen the article regarding the 3.8 CSL. I would enjoy reading about another masterpiece such as the 3002tti. Can you provide a link to the other feature?

Thanks Harry,

Wow! I wonder if it bothers these professional quality resto guys (like Keith of "my2002tii") to drive their cars on public road, in the rain, etc.

It would kill me to do all that work and have the underscarriage become all mud splattered and chipped up through everyday use.

Thanks for the link.

If you go to the additional links section and hit "media" you will find a few articles on his other cars; three on the 38csi. With respect to the other images in the gallery, when you roll over it you have to press the image. It will open up in a smaller section within the same window.

I have about 25k into my 02, probably more if I factored time. I am sure my resto does not come close to the cost of either of the two cars mentioned. Be that as it may, I don't drive in the rain and I try not to park on the streets of NYC too often as many play bumper cars to park. I always found if you baby something too much, that's when it gets jacked up. Based on their previous posts, I get the feeling both Keith and Paul drive the hell out of their cars - but with care

My very small claim to fame :

The wheels shown on his E21 are now mine..

Bought them from Tim Jones, who bought the car from Paul (and sold it later). He kept the wheels and sold them to me some time ago. One of these days I'll either install them on one of my E21's or go nuts and do turbo flares on my '02 and use them on it.

In the interim, here are three shots to hold you over. Website has some good articles on his 323, e9 and 5 series. The resto process is detailed and exterior and interior shots are provided, as well as a vendor list.

I have been stalking your car as well over the years:confused. Don't think I have had a chance to say it but sweet ride and thanks for sharing details on your work. It's hard to believe that others in the vintage/antique (whatever we are termed) BMW community don't know about Paul's site. When you first get the fever you start lurking everything 02 then happen across and e9 say, wow! As soon as you ask most coupe owners or enthusiasts about the model, for the last few years they would say, "um, Paul Cain and his Fjord 38csi." Then you say, "Damn!"

I am not concerned with VTBimmer, I am sure he will get back at me by September and/or at Lime Rock. He (and anyone else) has enough ammunition from my periodic technical posting difficulties on the FAQ. It's all love. Anyway, I am not certain if it was this board or one of the other sites that I recently learned of the Bader Karmann Ghia, sick! http://www.bader-racing.de/en/portfolio/portfolio.htm

Imagine a Road and Track style face off between the Ghia 993 and Pauls 3002, "Battle of the Not-So Period Correct". That would make for a nice spread.

Neither my car nor my pityful attempt at a webpage are worthy of comparison with the Bader Ghia or Paul Cain's work.

These guys are true artists with a neurotic flare for going overboard that I can never approach. Besides which these guys seem to have spared no expense.

My project has simply been a personal expression of technical and sporting interests tempered by practicality and fiscal resources.

I hope that later this fall when I get ready to sell my turbocharged 2002 I can locate a buyer who will appreciate my efforts.:help

rns7602,

Forgot to say thank for the kudos.

In addition to your suggestion for a not so period specific comparo... .. . I think it would be cool to have a performance enhanced 2002 shootout.

I suggested this to the editor of Performance BMW that they pull together an 02 shootout, best of the rest, blah blah blah.

I don't think my car would be one of the most powerful, but it would be really neat to see all of the beastiest 2002's from around the world together for a test and tune day at some location.

Kurt, in my case, I always planned to drive it and enjoy it. The purpose of going the extra mile on the prep and finish of the car was to have the best of both worlds - a car that looks nice and will stay that way for a long time - and still be easy to keep clean. After 5,000 miles on my car since April including a trip to Road America and back of like 1,600 miles it takes about two hours to get it ready because the grime washes off with little effort. I don't have a rock chip or a scratch because the clear coat on this thing is super tough stuff.

The last night driving back from Wisconsin to Illinois, I stopped to get gas. The car had a green moustache on the face of it that was awful - because the bugs were soo bad - and I couldn't hardly see out of the windshield. Fast forward to a good wash and cleanup - and on to this past Saturday at our annual CCA Summer Picnic my car won best of class Pre-92 and People's Choice Overall - and I wasn't even planning to show it - they practically forced me to enter the show or leave!!!

Thanks TMK001!

Keith - I enjoy driving my 02 as well. But I have to admit when the lovebugs are heavy in FL it really bothers me. Those little buggers have acid in their bodies and if the get cooked on before you have a chance to wash they are like cement.

Congrats on the show win! I envy your ability to endure the environment. I have just found that things don't stay cherry as long when they get used often.

Say, what kind of clear coat did you apply is it an Emron product?

Kurt
