Another additional problem with the car is that the previous (neighbor) has put platinum tipped plugs in the car. The mechanic who overlooked the vehicle in pre buy testing said that the current plugs are causing the engine to run a liittle rough, and suggested that original plugs are the go. Has anyone else had experience with this? What are the recommended plugs by you the enthausiasts, gaps etc. Is there a suggested 'bible' for the 633 csi that I should immediately invest in?

BOSCH spark plugs are the way to go on these cars. Cant go wrong with them. I am not too far into the bimmer world, but from the 2 M30s ive owned, BOSCH makes them happy. Single prong is fine. As for the bible, they are hard to find and really all you need for these cars is a wiring diagram. Everything is pretty easy to figure out if you just look at it for a little bit. These cars are easy to work on compared to whats out now.

Thanks for the tip once again Jeff. Off to get some new plugs and sort this out. Off the top of your head do you know what the gap requirement is?

i find using the correct bosch silvers(silbers)offer the best result.i tried the lastest and greatest platinum +4's once, and pulled them right out.there was even word that the electrodes were falling off and having fun bounching around in the cylinders.
my volvo on the other hand uses factory 3 prongers.never had a problem with those.it has a hemi style head, twin cam,4 valve per cyl..all aluminum engine.butt dyno indicates more power than the 6,but the fun of driving is not there.

WR9LS if I recall, Bosch Silver (Silber). M30s HATE Platinums.

they would probably do fine with platinums if they had a MSD 6AL box and a decent coil...someone should email TCD and ask them what they use on their setups with the MSD

NGK ZGR5A plugs also work fine in the M30 engine. They are normally stocked in NAPA stores. NAPA part number is 5839.

The Bentley 5 Series Service Manual has a wealth of information pertinant to the 6 series. The analogy of a 6er as a reskinned 5er holds in most cases. The factory service manual for 6ers is still available on CD but it is geared towards professional mechanics and skips many details that a backyard mechanic might find bewildering -- Step 1. Remove engine . . .

I have used Bosch Platinum plugs and an MSD on my 80 Euro for more than 15 years. The only thing I did to get it to run right was to adjust the idle air mixture a little leaner (IIRC). Just changed plugs for the first time in so long that I cannot remember and I only did that to try the newer multi prong plugs from Bosch
