View Full Version : Non-M E46 oil coolers
Greg S 07-12-2006, 08:37 PM Hey, I was wondering what ya'll thought of this http://www.victoryproductdesign.com/e46_kit_main.htm($575) oil cooler? I also know Technik makes one but it's $1100 :eyecrazy . Any other options out there, or tips?
Thanks,
Greg.
Vince S. 07-12-2006, 08:49 PM I need to clarify this. Pple just don't get it. You look at two kits and immediately the cheaper one is the right one and the more expensive one is not. Different kits for different purposes.
The VPD kit is for ANY E46. The Technik one that I helped/designed is not. I went through tons of paper computations and bench testings before selecting an optimal setup for Technik ASA SC Stage 1. This setup involves a compressor that uses the exsiting oil system, hence I have to use my engineering knowledge to redesign the cooling system.
So please...don't compare the both kits.
Greg S 07-12-2006, 08:55 PM $1100 is retarded though. How do you know Victory didn't do any calculations/bench testing on their kit? Are the oil pumps on 323/5/8/30 really that much different to warrant a different design for each car?
EDIT-I wouldn't consider $575 for an oil cooler cheap, it's not like it's $100...
The kit we sell is not for just any E46 as it cannot be used on the E46M3.
As far as comparison between our kit and others to be honest I am not that familiar with other competing designs. Our kit however is track proven and is currently in use on an BMWCCA E46 prepared class car (someone who we sponsor).
Any questions concerning our kit please let me know.

Is it possible to use a larger oil cooler or is your kit designed to use that certain size?

It's all AN fittings to the cooler so you could use any size you want as long as it fits.

I know that but I'm wondering if it will mess with flow rates.
vodomagoo 07-13-2006, 12:35 PM why would you need to put a bigger cooler on the vpd kit? I have one and changed the cooler just to make it fit better on my race car but the cooler it comes with works great.

The size that we provide is good for most all applications. We typically get reports back from our customers of 15-30 degree F temperature drop. Of course most of this depends on ambient conditions, vehicle speed, loads etc. If you require a larger cooler, we can certainly sell you a larger one. We exclusively use Setrab and can get any size that they manufacture.
The only issue with going with a larger size is the unknowns associated with mounting of the cooler itself.

I was curious because Techniks kit uses a larger cooler, and I like to overdo things :stickoutt . So there won't be any flow issues(pressure, volume, etc...) when upgrading to a larger cooler?

There certainly would not be any issues with pressure or flow by going to a larger cooler provided that the inlet and outlet ports are the same size. As I mentioned before if you would like a larger radiator, we can certainly obtain a larger size. Typically takes 1 week to get the larger size from Setrab.

Volume will of course be larger with a larger heat exchanger. Pressure and flow rates are mainly determined by the pump and the plumbing/port sizes.
Whats wrong with a proven setup? Arbitrarily "overdoing" things is just going to be a PITA to fit, and if anything will be heavier. It might not even drop the temps any further assuming the setup already offered is efficient and has the proper flow rates.

I'm a pessimist, what can i say? :help
