View Full Version : E46 M3 vs. Sl 55 AMG
littlelee1 07-11-2006, 04:59 PM Coming home last night, pull up to an older man in his 50's in a silver SL55 amg. Beautiful looking car.
I figured I needed to have a little fun as work was a drag.
He gets off his cell phone and points forward. I figure I might as well get the jump because I honestly would have no chance. We start from about 80 mph.
I pull about a car before he gets on his car, I hear that beautiful engine switch over the higher RPM's and next thing you know he is even with me.
150 mph approaches and he is a good 4-5 car lengths ahead and just moving like a train. We gave eachother a nod and thumbs up and headed our seperate ways.
Note: SL55's ARE MONSTERS. Who knows what un-stock form would do.
M3AVUS 07-11-2006, 05:01 PM they are quick dood
fm.illuminatus 07-11-2006, 06:02 PM Sounds like a fun run... noble death. :)
gti1689 07-11-2006, 06:04 PM nice race. stock they are fast, but modded sl55's are pretty badass.
BMWALDO 07-11-2006, 06:41 PM Great death! Nice run-in. Those things pick up and then ........ GO!
Iron Chef 07-11-2006, 06:44 PM Nice death.
unknown01 07-11-2006, 07:39 PM sl65 ftw.
boostedm3freak 07-11-2006, 07:56 PM Good Death Never Had A Chance
andrew325ci 07-11-2006, 08:08 PM nice race yet
coldblooded 328 07-11-2006, 08:16 PM good run, sl55s have too much trq, they dominate on the freeway
llegos 07-11-2006, 08:38 PM sl65 ftw.
seriously....
Midnight Shark 07-11-2006, 08:50 PM Talking from experience, that had to be one hell of a run!
unknown01 07-11-2006, 09:10 PM Ive (ridden) in a few fast cars, two being the SL65 AMG with a 75% locked diff, and a CL55 AMG. First of all, they were the 2 fastest cars Ive ever been in...but the SL65 was so fast it hurt.
Why doesn't BMW make a supercar competitor with a V12 or something?
renemesis 07-11-2006, 09:32 PM Z4 6.0? ^____^
NOCTURNAL 07-11-2006, 09:55 PM No shame in losing to that.
Watch out for those SL 65's... heard those ones are crazy!
autoverrückt 07-11-2006, 10:51 PM Pretty much had the same experience with an SL55, and an S600.
funfgang 07-11-2006, 11:08 PM well...i swear...once...with these SawEET clears...I...

riderguy5 07-12-2006, 12:01 AM Why doesn't BMW make a supercar competitor with a V12 or something?
i thought they did with the z8
rmani 07-12-2006, 12:04 AM nice death. I've driven my friend's sl55 at very high speeds and the straight-line acceleration is just incredible.
Deuuuce 07-12-2006, 12:47 AM Young guy at Sears Point had an SL65 with a Renntech chip and airbox. Ran 11.7 @ 120mph on his first run w/ drag radials. Didn't launch too well and it was a slow night...
Also owns Ben Traynor's old S600 (written up in Car & Driver) which he's selling.
Sick, just sick.
Boosted2003 07-12-2006, 09:58 PM Its funny how mercedes pretty much bought out AMG in late 80's to early 90's.
AMG use to mod alot of different cars from jap to euro.
Im guessing the video of the SLK and enzo is good example of what the kids with trust funds from fathers owning the oil fields in middle east are doing with all our money. LOL
coolcarlski 07-12-2006, 10:01 PM Its funny how mercedes pretty much bought out AMG in late 80's to early 90's.
AMG use to mod alot of different cars from jap to euro. The AMG Jap mods were only body kits!
jrhaile 07-12-2006, 10:24 PM I raced one once in my turbo e30 and that thing pulled like crazy at high speeds :eyecrazy
cdb3113 07-12-2006, 11:10 PM i went WOT against the AMG as well, from 75mph, had a thread about it before where people talked about the sl65 as well. the sl55 is a powerhouse. my second try against her (female driver) i pulled a little up to about 100mph, then she actually touched the throttle and flew by.
crazy highway car that makes a lot of exhaust music!
FrankW 07-14-2006, 04:47 AM The AMG Jap mods were only body kits!
not entirely true.
back in 98-99 remember the W210 E50 AMG? The Japanese special ordered 100 unit of them from AMG and made them E60 AMG with a special tuned engine and wider fender than the regular E50 AMGs. Only few of them every made it to another country. Taiwan has one of these rare E60 AMGs.
LWRNCE 07-14-2006, 05:15 AM Very fast but the handle like pigs... trust me I know from experience:devillook
M3AVUS 07-14-2006, 07:20 AM That's the thing, I love my ///M and hopefully will get a e46 M or wait out til the e92 M. The reality of it all is that BMW's counterpart Benzo's are superior cars than our bimmers. BMW is a quality car as to Mazda's to Toyota's. In reality Mercedes are producing cars that put out amazing numbers compared to most cars out there. A friend of mine, she just purchased a SL500 w/ Lorinser kit and it is badass. Fast and luxurious. Why does it seem that bimmers have few options as to fast cars than Benzo's. All AMG models are fast in any line of models they have. The ///M's seem to have just the M3 and M5's. Still the C-class AMG can smoke any M3 just like that.
DTM325PWR 07-14-2006, 07:24 AM get that NOS goen in your car and it might be a little different?
littlelee1 07-14-2006, 07:26 AM Very fast but the handle like pigs... trust me I know from experience:devillook
You have a wicked 328!

Yes the 124 body E class E60 I remember. The last yr of the E50 was late 97 early 98 because the first yr of the E55 was early 98.There was no 99 E50. We only had the AMG C43(98) in the States that particular yr. E55 came here in Sept 98 as a 99.
Jean-Claude 07-14-2006, 08:53 AM M6 then get a Dinan SC'er. That's the closest BMW competition to a sl55/65amg.
M3Romeo 07-14-2006, 10:05 AM I was going to say...theres no way you would of had the SL...That was the 2nd car i raced on the 1/4 mile after getting my car tuned to 420rwhp...I only beat him by like 2 cars once we crossed the line.

The SL55/65 gain from mods very easily... intake and software alone is a huge kick in the pants. Out of both I think the SL55 sounds the best... SL65 doesnt really have that crazy sound like the 55.
LWRNCE 07-14-2006, 10:45 AM You have a wicked 328!
Thanks you have a crazy E46M

I thought DINAN did a Twin Turbo E31 BMW with 5.6L V12 with 607HP and 666ft-lbs of torque.
Dyno claim of DINAN Twin Turbo (http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=135585RrwCT&i=2982)

Agreed. I had the back end on one come out on me at 45mph and it wasn't even a sharp turn. Little cool outside and those Pzero Rossas are for shit anyway. Traction control couldn't really do anything since the tires had no grip so i had to counter steer to stay out of the weeds. Built to go fast in a straight line and look good doing it...that's all.
Ingenere 07-14-2006, 08:07 PM The SL55 is one of the best cars that I have owned. It is a great all-rounder. Mine is derestricted and has seen 202mph.....and beat up quite a few cars on road courses.

I can't imagine how you manged to get sideways in an SL55. The electronic nanny in a stock car is so intrusive that it will not let you develop any slip angles. Modded and turned off (stock doesn't turn full off), the car is alot of fun....meaning that you actually have to know how to drive the car.

With the traction control on you can still manage to get it alittle sideways. In order to do so you really have to be trying to make it.
FrankW 07-15-2006, 05:36 AM Interesting!

my mistake. it's a 96 E50 made into a E60 AMG. W210, not the W124.
according to the article i have. AMG made 199 of them special ordered by Japanese and 3 made it to Taiwan. rest are sold to Japan. They also showed a AMG certificate signed by the engine builder.
5956cc, 32 valve, 381hp/5500rpm, 59.1kgm/3750rpm
some more info on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W210

They do (did), where have you been? My Z8 will beat SL55s all day long (never raced an SL65, so dunno); it's that silly slushbox of theirs. I have three kills to my credit, including a very frustrated friend of mine. Oh and on the twisties, forgetabouit!!!!

If you take the ESP off, it lets it get a bit more tail. I was a passenger in an E55 driven by Tommy Kendall and he used the ESP to perfection, getting the car sideways and as the ESP came in the car was pointing towards the apex and we were gone!! Since then I have learned to use the ESP as just another technolgy. I would rather have a full off.............but...............
