View Full Version : Boosted WRX vs 99 M3
ultimachi 07-10-2006, 03:50 AM Usually I don't race on the street, but tonight I was feeling a little frisky.
Anyways I was cruising home from the laundromat (don't have a washer and dryer at the new house yet). I make a turn onto a major street, and I see someone coming up pretty fast, but slows as he gets near me. It was a silver WRX. I hear a BOV go off, and notice toxic green gauges on his A-pillar. :shifty
So I'm still cruising and we come to a stop light. We both lead off easily on first and continue cruising all the while he's making sure I notice he's got something under the hood with the BOV.
We come to another stop light. I think what the hell....I'll give him a little run. So we both lead off easily again in first, then I hit second and mash the throttle for about a second to tease him. I let off a bit then we line up going about 30mph then we both smash the throttle completely even all the way through third. I hit 4th and started pulling just a bit, then I shut down 5 seconds later, as I notice a cop making a left hand turn at an intersection. Suprisingly he didn't flip a bitch and nail us. Well it's not much, but it was a fun way to end the weekend. :D
agmobb 07-10-2006, 03:59 AM Sounds like a good little run. Always fun to play around with the wrx's.
NakNak 07-10-2006, 04:16 AM Arn't all WRX's boosted....
agmobb 07-10-2006, 04:25 AM They all come with a turbo but I think the poster was refering to what looked like boost gauges. More boost than stock, if you will.
ultimachi 07-10-2006, 04:35 AM Yeah.....from what I saw was carbon fiber hood, gauges, BOV, and exhaust. He definitely had more power than stock.

Was it a STi John or just regular 2001 & up WRX? If it's just regular turbo WRX with light mods you should still walk it all day but never know what they have done plus from a roll they dont have as much power as if you if you race them from a stop.
coolcarlski 07-10-2006, 06:46 AM Could not have been an STi I'll tell you that much! On a roll in first and 2nd they give hell to our M3's.Ask me how I know!;) TQ TQ TQ!

Uh are you ok??? John's dakar yellow m3 that ran that wrx is really modded he's good for mid 13s easy with his setup...Even from a roll STi wont make much difference to me because they loose a lot of power from a roll due to there gearing but from dead stop then i can see m3 playing catch up but they didnt..
slowcheetah 07-10-2006, 08:22 PM Yeh from a roll the WRX's in particular suffer, losing 27% in the drivetrain sucks.

I hardly think a car length is that serious. Raced a friend while he started in 1st and I left it in 2nd. I think it would have been a lot closer if I was in 1st gear.

OK I'll let you believe that! What are you're friends mods?
Against a lightly modded WRX ,sure it's possible. My M332i murders lightly modded WRX's,I'll stress LIGHTLY MODDED WRX's.But let's talk STi. I have no doubt that my M332i would beat a lightly modded Sti on a roll at HIGHER speeds that is!I hardly think a car length is that serious. Raced a friend while he started in 1st and I left it in 2nd. I think it would have been a lot closer if I was in 1st gear.A car length is not all that serious, actually a car length in a half.I was surprised he did'nt pull me more but I could not catch him going from 1st to 4th and he could not pull away. In my M332i(TMS chip,Schrick cams) I believe I would have caught him and left him.In my AMG he(STi) would have been annhilated.I won't even bring up my Modded DSM!;)

John's mods on his dakar m3 vs that WRX is exhaust, intake, chip, m50 intake manifold, and throttle body, and new radiator also i believe..
coolcarlski 07-10-2006, 09:28 PM John's mods on his dakar m3 vs that WRX is exhaust, intake, chip, m50 intake manifold, and throttle body, and new radiator also i believe..STi >WRX but good run! Believable indeed.
M Roady 07-10-2006, 11:22 PM Nice kill! Sounds like a modestly modified WRX run. STi should come out on top. And a modified STi would put a hurtin' on you. A heavily modified STi would leave you bleeding out the tail pipe. I know that first hand.:(
The only STi I've played with was heavily modified. A stage II TT kit would get me in the same neighborhood, maybe....pretty sure he was getting ready to dump a butt load of $$$ in the engine, so a couple trips to ICS might be needed to get in his neighborhood now.
newbimmerguy 07-11-2006, 09:49 AM just for refernce if that car only had an exhaust and a BOV it would be making close to stock hp still. BOV's actually decrease hp in the wrx as well as aftermarket air intakes unless you are running a different turbo setup.
KarlSpackler 07-11-2006, 11:06 AM Title is funny. Where could I find an un-boosted WRX? :stickoutt
Good kill
coolcarlski 07-11-2006, 11:21 AM just for refernce if that car only had an exhaust and a BOV it would be making close to stock hp still. BOV's actually decrease hp in the wrx as well as aftermarket air intakes unless you are running a different turbo setup. Please Explain!I know if the BOV is not routed back into the intake and the car has a Air mass you can lose power.
burrito007 07-11-2006, 11:21 AM i dunno stock wrx is probably decent competition for any e36. better weight, better power, better gearing for low speed.
If he had exhaust + chip he was putting out somewhere around 280hp. While this is only 220-225 at the wheels, its still much more than an m3.
When my wrx was modd'ed there were never any problems with m's. Heck it even gave e46's a run for their money from a stop.
burrito007 07-11-2006, 11:23 AM Please Explain!I know if the BOV is not routed back into the intake and the car has a Air mass you can lose power.
lol you just explained it. The air is metered before it is blown off, which is why when you have a bov, the car runs rich for a second right after you let off the gas.
ultimachi 07-12-2006, 06:39 AM Kevin I don't run mid 13's. I don't even know what I run yet......but I doubt it's mid 13's. My mods won't get me near that.
coolcarlski 07-12-2006, 06:45 AM Even from a roll STi wont make much difference to me because they loose a lot of power from a roll due to there gearing but from dead stop then i can see m3 playing catch up but they didnt..Trust me I was running this guy from a roll from 1st to 4th and he had me by 1.5 cars each time and held it.I could neither catch him (06 STi)and he could not pull away.I have Dinan SW and SS full exhaust on my 99M3.He has exhaust. He was not losing any topend as far as I could see!Don't u get it!

A properly tuned WRX with Turbo back exhaust and intake only will produce close to 300 whp with equal torque. A properly tuned STI with Intake , exhaust, FMIC will produce 350-369 whp with equal torque ( give or take) . Don't sleep on them :evil2

That was with your 99 M3? You know the WRX that I raced was totally debadged, but it did have the STI wing and front hood scoop. The hood was carbon fiber though. It looked like an STI, but I couldn't really tell as it was debadged, and the area was poorly lit at night. Or maybe I couldn't see the STI badge...don't know. Oh well....

With my 99M3 2 wknds ago!Lots of guys with WRX's pose as Sti's.Nothing new!All the Imprezas come with hoodscoop whether it's a WRX or STi!

Stock WRX are only 180-190whp, max out on stock turbo will only yield you 250whp. Unless you get a VF34 or VF22, you won't get close to 300whp in a WRX. I used to own an 04.

That's why I said properly tuned , was refering to meth injection and or maybe a cutout .

I see. You didn't mention aftermarket turbos in your thread, thus the confusion.
Yeah, WRX will produce tons of power before the tranny goes out.
turbodx 07-13-2006, 06:34 PM LoL your right about that one ( tranny) but only the WRX not the STI .

Hmmm, well if it was 1.5 cars each time with your mods from a stop, then I think me running an STI might be believable.....considering I do have few more mods, and it was from a roll. ;)
hungryjack 07-17-2006, 09:57 AM good run, All wheel drive has its downfalls when the seed gets poured on (unless your driving the new Porsche that is..)
