View Full Version : e34 M5 vs. '06 RS4 = ouch
540Greg 07-09-2006, 11:28 PM I thought I would have a chance in the twisties but he was a beast. We were on Old Santa Cruz Hwy heading down from Summit Rd. I was going at a pretty good pace and I noticed some xenons gaining. I then started to really try and pull ahead, no such luck. I had my car at the edge of traction nearly drifting around some of the corners. He still caught up pretty quickly, damn. I "let" him pass at a stop sign and we both gave the thumbs up. I watched him pull away and corners where I was boucing through he was flat and composed.

Julian 07-09-2006, 11:32 PM The RS4 has suddenly made me look at Audi in a different way. And the fact that they redesigned their transmission setup to put everything behind the front axle for better weight dist. is awesome. Nice death, I would still take your M5 though, I have a weird fetish for e34 m5's.

Who wouldn't? And who doesn't? :D
RS4's are much newer and technology goes a long ways... eventually everything gets overtaken in performance. Thats not to say that you dont have an extremely well-handling car, though. :buttrock
Ahh the joys of working for an audi dealer, i got to see the rs4, s8 and s6 waayyy before most people did. The rs4 has to have one of the best designed v8s ever, fsi, 420bhp and a 8000rpm rev limit.
BimmerLover84 07-09-2006, 11:52 PM IMHO the E90 M3 better have 420+ hp, but they may keep it at the 400-415 hp number I've heard thrown around recently. In the back of my mind I can see BMW taking advantage of the several hundred pound weight advantage instead of beating Audi in the horsepower war, which is most likely what will happen.
eurocar328 07-10-2006, 12:14 AM Best part about Audis are their exhaust note....to die for. Nice death to a very nice car
cbolt 07-10-2006, 02:50 AM your beast looks good....much better than any audi!
angrypancake 07-10-2006, 07:50 AM just wait til you get that biturbo ;)
sprp85 07-10-2006, 08:00 AM so far, RS4 is one of the hottest performance vehicle out... lets be honest. well we will see when the new m3 reveals.. i know that will be the uber hotness..
M3/4 LIFE 07-10-2006, 08:35 AM regardless of the actual outcome ... YOUR E34 M5 FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
beautiful car:cool
unesential 07-10-2006, 08:47 AM Lets see what the Audi does in 15 years.

Thanks everybody, my car is a lot of fun to drive.
A more accurate statement would be "Let's see how the Audi will do against the hottest new technology 15 years from now". It'll still be a great car but as I found out 15 years of advancement is tough to overcome.

PS. The BiTurbo lands TOMORROW :D
STL30 07-10-2006, 02:17 PM Hey, I actually saw one two days ago. It looked ferocious in that bright blue that is advertised on the website. Pretty cool, except the price= $66K!?!?!?!?!? Damn! Enough extra money over an M3 to push on 500 hp with a complete Dinan Stage 3 kit. Is it worth it? Watch the video and see!
STL30 07-10-2006, 02:34 PM That M3 is the English version of our Competition Package. Remember, Audi has been putting V8s in their S4 for 2 generations longer than BMW. Right after the RS4s second drift, he admits the BMW driver is probably having more fun. At about 12:00, he says that the M3 is more fun to drive. Remember also that the results would be different if the weather was nice, it was a little warmer and there was no wetness on the track. Anyway, we know the BMW M3 will reign as king among the sport-"saloons" when it debuts. Honestly, it only makes sense that the Audi won, with 2 more cylinders and all-wheel-drive with 60:40 rear bias. I want to see the rematch when the new M3 comes out!
At least 60 hp more, awd getting out of the tight corners on old Santa Cruz, advantage to the Audi. No shame, you could also have an E36 M3 racecar and your M5 for the price of that RS4.

Interesting thread. I was thinking "of course he's going to lose to an RS4" then I read your signature detailing the mods on your M5 (btw, you typoed 'forged'). Are those hp and tq numbers at the wheels I'm guessing? I'm wondering how your car would compare to my Aug '93 build 3.8 liter euro (Lanzer chip in mine)? In any event, your M5 sounds formidable with that engine you have in there.
It is interesting how 13 years of technology will eventually catch up. I was dead-even with a Neon SRT-4 this morning, not sure if he was modded or not. Sucks when a former $60K BMW M5 can't outrun a $23K Neon. I'm going to post a separate thread on this though.
Adam:
It would likely be modded if you went anywhere over 60mph. I have pulled on a stocker a while back. However, it doesn't take much to make them fast. At least you know his car will be long gone to the wrecking yard 15 years from now.

I wish that those numbers were at the wheels. I calculated a 15% driveline loss to get the numbers in my sig. The hp numbers were a little lower than I had hoped after my rebuild but I'm happy with the torque. It would be a close run with a stock 3.8 but the landzer chip might give you the edge. I also have a Landzer chip which gave me a little more power than the ones stated above.

91M5, When's the next meet? A drive to the coast sounds good this time of year.
Greg:
I was just thinking about that. Tough to find a weekend that is good for everyone but we might be able to do it. Maybe first weekend in August? Early a.m. have some breakfast and head back?

Kevin,
The first weekend in August sounds good to me.
