View Full Version : new testament bible
therzdae 07-07-2006, 06:34 PM alright so my girl friends birthday is coming up in like 2 weeks I wanna get her a really nice "new testament" bible, So if any one has ever gotten one off the internet give me a site, I looked at amazon and a few google links but cant seem to find a real nice one.
splackavellie 07-07-2006, 07:54 PM what do you mean by nice and why new testament only? why not just go to a local christian bookstore?
NIV is my preffered version but my sister rececently got the NAB and it seems to be pretty good also.
therzdae 07-07-2006, 08:09 PM Cause she only reads the new testament.. I would go but I dont have a ride, If I want to go somewhere I have to walk. Now sorry Im not sure what NIV and NAB are, can you tell me?

New International Version and New American Bible. NAB is preferred because it's the most up-to-date as far as accurate translations from the thoroughly researched and vetted source materials. It's a much more scholarly work, with respect to the language, meanings (and alternate meanings) of the words.
With so much material in the New Testament that refers back to the Old, your GF is missing out on a great deal of the literary significance of the material, however. :confused
:cool
therzdae 07-07-2006, 08:19 PM Yeah, I know. But she likes waht she likes, I may get one with both in it though. I think I found one from hertel bible publisher. its a wee bit pricey at 100 bucks.
But all I know if she uses the bible to find answers to her problems, and her bible is in sh*tty condition... So if there is a certain type of bible that would be good for problem solving then please tell me.

Well, for thoroughness in finding information, I'd say the most accurate information available would be advisable, and that's the NAB.
As for the "New Testament only" business, just because the Old is in it, doesn't mean she has to read it. But if she ever decides to do more in-depth reading than what she does currently, it'll be there, and handy.
Meanwhile, 100 bucks is indeed way too pricey for a Bible, IMO. Take some of that money and get a cab to a decent Christian bookstore (or even conventional bookstore), and you can find plenty of very nice gift and presentation Bibles for 20-30 bucks or so.

no prob. glad i finally got to help someone out.
but yeah i agree that $100 is prob a lil too much even for a study bible. for $100 that better come with a CD for your comp and a recording.

:lol Yes. I love all creatures...some just a little more often than others...
dos Santos 07-08-2006, 10:36 AM As the others have said, I would recommend getting one with both old and new testaments. There are so many simple basics in the old testament, (i.e. ten commandments, creation, etc)
That being said, if you are near First Baptist of Atlanta, which is off of North Peachtree Rd, between Peachtree industrial (141) and Ashford Dunwoody, right off the side of the interstate, they have a huge bookstore in there, and they are cheaper than most bookstores. They have a very big selection too.
And I would go with the NAS version, because it is the most accurate as far as wording goes. For example, in the king james version, "thou shalt not kill" is written. In NAS, it is, "Thou shalt not murder".
I'm not sure about the exacts, but for this translation, instead of going back to the hebrew translation or something, they went all the way back to the "archaic" language. Or so I have been told. But yeah, it's the easiest to "understand".
That being said, I still prefer the good old King James Version.
Best wishes.
Getting to a Christian bookstore would be best.
You mentioned that she uses it to find answers to her problems.
there are a multitude of "problem solving" bibles on the market.
If you could get to one, to see the wide selection, it would be best.
If you can't get to a store...
