View Full Version : Euro E36 M3 Cluster
PrestoMB 07-07-2006, 03:59 PM Hey guys,
I was just wondering who all has the Euro E36 M3 Cluster? Also I searched but cant find any DIY's on how they installed it or pics or anything. Any info would be appreciated.

///3oris 07-07-2006, 04:01 PM I have one... many threads on it, too.
Is there a particular reason you want it?
Boris
PrestoMB 07-07-2006, 04:09 PM Hey Boris,
Yeah I saw you had it and tried to send you a PM but it said your PM box was full. No real reason just fantasizing about what I want when I have the money to go turbo:D. I was actually trying to find out if you had a page with pictures and all when you installed it but couldnt find any.

///3oris 07-07-2006, 04:18 PM I don't have a page because I started working on integrating some other things into the cluster. Unfortunately I kind of 'forgot' about the project so it's just sitting on my table collecting dust.
You really gain nothing by switching to the Euro cluster. It's only useful for two things:
1) Higher redline in case you plan on revving higher than 7k
2) Oil temp gauge
Most people get it for #2, but it's somewhat overkill. It ends up being a very expensive gauge, and it's kind of hard to get your dealer to 'transfer' your milage from one cluster to another. Not to mention make your mileage in miles instead of km.

PrestoMB 07-07-2006, 04:32 PM interesting, so your saying its more of a pain then anything? I thought a lot of F/I guys might do it because of the Oil Temp and also the ability to see the guage go all the way to 170mph:D, if you get the UK cluster . I know its not really that big of a deal but the little stuff is important once in a while. So does anyone else have the Euro Cluster? Also whats the difference between the 3.0l and the 3.2l?
M3 Euro LTW 07-08-2006, 09:26 AM Both clusters have redlines that are graduated, but the 3.0 one starts its graduated lines at 7K, the 3.2 starts at about 7.8K.
In addition, and I can not document this fully, I have not yet seen a UK cluster for a 3.2 that has the oil temperature guage in Farenheit, but I'm sure it exists. I have seen UK 3.0 clusters with Farenheit oil temp guages.
Otherwise, you can not tell the difference between them.
PrestoMB 07-08-2006, 09:37 AM Thanks alex. So it sounds like the perfect one for someone using a US engine would be the UK 3.0l cluster. So I assume you have them in your Euro powered cars right? So no other F/I'd cars put the euro cluster in?
M3 Euro LTW 07-08-2006, 09:46 AM I can't speak as to what FI cars use or don't use, there are tons of them out there.
It is a stealth way to get an oil temp guage in the car. Furthermore, the mpg guage that comes with our US M cars in the E36 range is just silly, stupid, and an insult.
Who drives an M to watch their mileage? Who drives a FI car to watch their mileage? Its insulting.
Why on earth BMW put M cars into our market without oil coolers and oil temperature guages is beyond me. Wait..... our E36 M cars were lacking individual TB too.... even more insulting.
<rant off>
Yeah, the 3.0 one would be a more natural cluster. I have one here for sale, but its in celcius. (not all were in F) Redline is more appropriate. These clusters would probably work in a 4 cylinder car as well, but I am not positive. Changing the chip to the 4 banger chip would probably be all you need to do.
SiGmA 07-08-2006, 10:38 AM How does one have the dealership transfer the miles? That is one thing I want to do when I change clusters, as I want my cars actual mileage to stay with the car.
M3 Euro LTW 07-08-2006, 02:23 PM Call your dealership.
I suspect that if you drive in with your stock cluster, and they can see and record the miles, they would have no problem re-programming the new/used cluster to reflect what you drove in on.
They probably have a fee, and they probably put a sticker of some kind on the actual new/used cluster to indicate that you've adjusted the miles on it.
SiGmA 07-09-2006, 06:10 AM Cool, that sums it up enough for me. I was pretty sure that reprogramming them was possible, but someone who *knows a lot about BMWs* tried to tell me it was not possible to reprogram them. Thank you for clearing that up. I think there is a sticker they put on the cluster and on the door jamb build plate, I recall reading that sometime in the past when I read about the subject.
Thanks!

Very old bump... But where is this chip located?
I've got a 4cyl cluster that i'd like to use in my in my 6cyl, and I've been told by a forum member that I need to change a chip in the cluster... Any help would be appreciated.
