View Full Version : !991 M5 on craigslist San Diego
BahnBurner 07-07-2006, 10:23 AM I saw this on craigslist this morning. I am not really sure what these go for, but it seems like a reasonable deal, for a pretty clean car. Here is the link if anyone is interested:

Nomadic Logic 07-07-2006, 10:30 AM Wow that's a lot of miles!
Wiseguy ON 07-07-2006, 10:38 AM You can find them with half the miles for $10-12k. Nice car, but it's due for a $10k engine rebuild.
surfinmud 07-07-2006, 02:17 PM Who says it needs a rebuild? I'll be happy to let you take it to your mechanic for an inspection. It doesn't smoke or burn oil, and still pulls quite nicely. The high miles are a testament to the care given to it. If I hid the odo you'd never guess how many miles were on it. ;)

got'em, thanks. Has the car had a recent compression check done?
kxlara 07-09-2006, 10:54 PM I've got a 9/90 build with 215k miles, runs like a top, and fun too. If you're good with M cars, you'll have fun with this one. Just remember what M stands for :-)
rcantu 07-10-2006, 01:36 AM so were all these miles city or highway?
jimmmmm 07-11-2006, 05:34 PM sold to this owner 1 month ago for $6500. known issues are: major clunk in drivetrain depending on how you shift; oil leaks visible from top of engine bay; front bumper has large crack; rf fender lip pulled down from tire grabbing it; hood has been replaced; paint on roof cracked/dead; driver's seat motors iffy; headrests inop; softball sized hole in carpet- driver side; door panel delamination- minor to moderate; tint job peeling off..... just to name a few
WRX2M3 07-11-2006, 09:26 PM Thank you very much for the heads up!!!! No longer considering this car.
2DYE4 07-12-2006, 01:40 AM that shit is wack, thanks for the heads up.

Nomadic Logic 07-12-2006, 09:19 AM I'm not out to defend the guy, but he did say:
I'll be happy to let you take it to your mechanic for an inspection.
surfinmud 07-12-2006, 01:28 PM So I see the former owner is pissed off that I'm giving some TLC to the car and flipping it.....very unclassy act on your part to attempt to ruin my sale
Funny you never mentioned many of these things when I bought the car. Anyways....since I've bought it.
- Old crappy tint removed and fresh 35% tint applied to all 7 windows. $400
-Softball hole in carpet on drivers side: Maybe if you got New OEM M5 floomats like I did you wouldn't have a hole. It's protected/covered now - $120
- Shifter has been replaced. I don't seem to have problems with major clunks in the drivetrain...maybe you had trouble driving it? $250
RE: Oil leak. Like you said when I bought it..."it is a slow leak" It drips one or two drops in a week.
Driver's seat motor works fine. Every adjustment works. To move the seat back you need to press down and back at the same time, thats the only quirk.
Headrests ARE inop, I just found out thanks to your post. So I took the seatbacks apart and put them in the lowest position. No one needs them up anyways. I'm driving an M5, i dont' need freakin power headrests.
RF fender lip is damaged. It's not that bad, I can send pix to interested parties. There are also door dings. But this car has 235k, what do you expect. These are things you see when you check the car out in person.
Paint on roof is not cracked, but dulled. Clear coat shows fading. Needs a wet sand. I might have this taken care of before the sale.
Passenger rear door panel is slightly delamed. (Space between door and panel) Please take a look yourself and see if it is major. Doesn't bother me. Again i'll send pics.
So I bought it cheap, putting some TLC and $$$ in it and reselling it for a little profit. What is the harm in that? Most of the things you mentioned are COSMETIC anyway. An M5 is a driver's car.
Again, TAKE IT TO YOUR MECHANIC if you are concerned.
surfinmud 07-12-2006, 01:43 PM talk about full disclosure...haha now even teh IRS knows how much i'm making.
I "stole" it for 6500 (an M5 for christs sake) Sorry jimmmm
Put 400+120+250+(tbd) = 770+my time
So $7270. Will sell for 8.2k firm. Still a deal for the new owner. :)
JuliusPleaser 07-12-2006, 04:50 PM It's not like any of the 'problems' are a big deal anyway.
I hate a threadkiller. :shifty
surfinmud 07-12-2006, 05:08 PM oh yeah one more thing...
NEVER did I claim that this was a perfect or immacculate car.
The craigslist ad only allows 4 pictures, so I can't put up pictures of the trouble spots. Bimmerfourms won't allow me to attach pictures either. :help
If you expect an immacculate M5 for 8k then you're not a serious buyer anyway...
All in all I think this comes down to seller's remorse. :embarrasm
Hey at least look at this way...the owner for the last 5 years just disclosed all of the (minor) problems. Some I didn't even know about!! I wish he did that for me when I bought it......
m thrizl 08-26-2006, 03:57 PM most people have a problem with other people buying and selling cars. ive run into it plenty of times listing my cars here-nice BMW's and good buys, btw. some poeple just cant stomach giving a profit to others. what people should be more worried about is themselves learning about how to look at a car to determine its value. but then again, im a car dealer, so im naturally cynical towards the general public, guess that explains why the general public is naturally cynical towards dealers:D
i say if the car checks out and its within your budget, do it! it is a "price buy" but sometimes ya gotta fake it till you make it, and theres no shame in a making a "price buy" on a M aslong as it checks out ok.
