View Full Version : E46 M3 vs. IS350
littlelee1 07-07-2006, 09:43 AM So I have yet to have the oppurtunity to run one of the new IS350's untill last night.
Was on an undisclosed road here in Dallas at around 1 in the morning coming home. Black IS350 pulls up next to me, man it's a mean looking car!
He put's up three fingers signaling three honks, I let him do the start and on the third honk we take off from a 75 roll.
By the end of third I've pulled about a half a car on him. Fourth gear comes swiftly with a nice little clink as it engages and the clutch is out. This is where the M comes alive with the exceptional gearing. 120 comes quickly with me about 2 cars ahead, 5th gear is rolled into as the distance increases between us. Speedo eventually hits 160 with him 5-6 cars back still working the cars heart out. No match for a modded M.
For a little fun I hit 6th gear as I notice he is still going after it, 175 comes up and I know I need to start shutting it down. (Roadway was empty)
All of a sudden, V1 goes off...laser. Dallas Police officer on the otherside of a bridge hiding. First time in my life I have ever been so frightened, this could mean big trouble if stopped. I look back into my rear view, cop doesn't even go to get in his car. Whew! No chase, no ticket, and hopefully he is not radioing (sp?) us in. I quickly take the next exit as does the IS350 and we dart our seperate ways to our houses.
Exceptionally fun run, quick car, good way to end the night.
mihalis 07-07-2006, 09:54 AM That is one awesome race man! Wow, 175 mph! That is crazy! If I was the cop I would have just give you a thumbs up! ;) A friend of my buddy's was doing 130mph in a SVT Mustang when I statie pulled up to his right, gave him a thumbs up, and floored it! [I really don't think he was driving a crown vic though] :cool
mitchelrl 07-07-2006, 10:39 AM That is insane! Thats my kind of luck right there.
littlelee1 07-07-2006, 10:44 AM That is insane! Thats my kind of luck right there.
I rarely put it full throttle on the road due to all the hazardous conditions (pedestrians, cars, variables etc.) But last night the tollway was completely empty and I felt within control...of course it had to be the one night we passed a cop. He was probably thinking, Holy crap they are going fast. Meh, I'll wait for someone else, lol.
ForgottenBhs 07-07-2006, 11:08 AM I didn't know pedestrians were hazardous to your car :stickoutt shiat just run em' ova... nice to finally see someone from D-town that has sum balls!!! Even tho my 325 is dog slow i still manage to pull hard on these modded civics, not even worth posting on the kill section:( and for some reason mustang owners never wanna race me! :mad Oh well it must have been fun driving at 175mph, and nice kill.

Well you also have to remember "175 mph" was probably more like 160-162 mph. BMW is notoriously bad for their speed-o error.
At night the Tollway is always lined with the ferrari's, Aston Martins, Merc's and BMW's itching for runs. Try heading out there around 11 p.m. and run around!

Yeah...but not for 10-15mph off...I think they are within 3-5mph range that they read wrong. For example, mine has a limiter at 130mph, the speedo always reads 135 when I hit the limiter [not that I do it too ofeten :devillook ] but yet my car chip report always shows 129 to 130 mph.
carrrnuttt 07-07-2006, 12:53 PM So can I bookmark this thread, for when I read about stock 325's and 328's beating an IS350? Now, 318's, those will smoke all, so...

Yeah well i'm sure my 325 won't stand a chance lol.. But it would be fun to watch all these really nice cars in action :) Maybe one day we can go drive around and i'll bring my camcorder, that would be fun.
El Kabong 07-07-2006, 01:10 PM I'll be looking for you in my 525iT. You're goin' DOWN!!! LOL

Man I'm not running you! You will downright spank me!
Go pick on a ferrari or something! :D
Forgottenbhs- your more than welcome to come out to the local bimmer meets, go to the forum subsections to figure out what is all going on in Dallas.
Carrnuttt- maybe they are beating IS250's, NOT IS350's. 1 litre difference.
Roffle Waffle 07-07-2006, 02:27 PM were you wearing your D&G tie?
littlelee1 07-07-2006, 02:39 PM were you wearing your D&G tie?
Of course not. To late at night. However I did have my D&G belt on. Luckily it was securely fastened around my waist.

My post was pure, unadulterated sarcasm. Within these forums, I can totally picture a 10-page thread that starts with the scenario I described. Look at all the G35 'kills' by 'almost-stock 325's in here, for example. ;)
littlelee1 07-07-2006, 04:00 PM lol

That's awesome! Hey can you guess who would win if I raced him? I raced a golf cart, and won so what do you think? LMAO

It would be close, might need to give me a 2 car head start.

325i_Dan 07-07-2006, 05:19 PM Great kill! "IS350.. Watch out M3!!!" :rofl ya right (Road & Track)
BMWALDO 07-07-2006, 05:35 PM Great run! That must have been a thrilling drive. I've often wondered what the police do or say to themselves when I've whipped past them.
"Damn, that thing sounded out of breath."
"Ooo. Maybe I should call this in...But look at that thing go."
Kabong and Carrnut. You guys make me laugh. Keeps the forums humble.
VADER13 07-07-2006, 05:40 PM I think all the is350s are slushboxes..for now.
175 in that sedan sounds scary..
88gta 07-07-2006, 05:42 PM Hello,
That sounds like a good run!
You have intake, exhaust and tune as your 'go fast' mods? What does that give an e46 M3, how much power gains? and what do you run in the 1/4? I am just curious.

Well thank you! I like the clean non-riced out stock look.

Yea I figured he was topped out, or at least did a top speed "electronically limited" run.
They will be beasts once they are modded.
omgitsroy326 09-08-2006, 02:27 AM nice, but you're nuts for going that fast man....
autoverrückt 09-08-2006, 07:14 PM Anyone race an IS350 from a dig? Or stock vs stock?

No matter how they modded those buggers, it'll still lose to modded E46 M3, boosted E36 M3, or even the boosted E30 M3.

Even though you have only 2 doors, it's still technically a sedan.
bbelt88 09-09-2006, 02:15 AM Yah, stock IS350's are no match for E46 M3s.....they run 13.7 quarter mile......
The quarter mile is not that much slower than the E46 M3, but its still a significant difference.....
It is very easy to Mod an IS350....have a friend who has one.....got intake and exhaust, took out the back seats and the passenger seat, removed spare tire and he ran 13.3 at the drag strip.....that is M3 territory right there.

BTW, you would have known if the cop was on his radio. The V1's K band should have been going off.
SurfdogCP 09-09-2006, 12:15 PM I could definitely have guessed that the M3 would beat the IS350. But the surprise was 175mph by a cop. Damn. I got pulled over doing 145mph once and let me just say, that's a ticket you don't need.

I was at MIR racing this past Sunday and I was in the top 16 for the Street Stock Class. I finally got bumped out by and E46 M3/C 6sp but not because he got a better time than me, but because he crossed the finish line before me. I guess that's my lesson learned for taking a 2/10's of a second nap at the starting line. :stickoutt
http://www.dragtimes.com/Lexus-IS350-Timeslip-10451.html
Here is the low down on my final run for that evening against the M3. It was my worst run of the night. My best run was earlier in the day when I did a 13.38@105mph. Car is bone stock except for an intake pipe replacement that removes the intake resonator and just smooths the airlfow. Still utilize the stock airbox and my 10000 mile OEM air filter. :) Only thing I removed was the spare tire for the day and I had 1/2 tank gas.
Run #4
6:53pm 48 degrees
This is where I finally got bumped out of the street stock class to a E46 M3. Lesson learned.. I got a better ET and faster trap speed than the M3. The run against the M3 he did a 13.7@103.07 and I ran a 13.52@104.39. I was kinda bummed that he won even though I beat him in ET and mph, but rules are rules. Since he left the starting line 2/10's sooner and crossed sooner he took the technical win. E46 M3's beware. :devillook

http://www.coleplay.net/Photos/IS350E46M3C.jpgMan I drove a couple of IS350's at the lexus car exhibition at Belmont race track. One wrd IMPRESSIVE & addictive to drive. So was the ES350 and GS350.
The IS 350 has balls and I love the paddle shifters. I also test drove an AWD IS250 and it's not bad for a 2.5 six. Both IS's handle very well which I was surprised.
The AWD car was not as big a surprise in handling as the IS350 was.I expected the AWD to handle better which it did but the 350 was good too. Both handled impressively.
I think the 350 would give my AMG a nice little run for the $$ in the 1/4 as well.;)
I'm assuming the M3 was a 6 spd manny!
Good #'s you have there for your 1/4 mile run.:)

0-60: 5.1
1/4: 13.7
Those tests were done with the Traction Control on and their numbers seem pretty honest. For those of us with 06 models we can disable the T/C to get better times and it shows. My best time without turning the T/C off is a 13.6@103.xxmph.
I would say Car and Drive has the most accurate test results of all the mags out there. Check out their site for correcting for weather. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...orweather.html

I agree. A 306hp 4 door running a very well with E46 m3 is very cool. High HP sedans are the way of the future, well at least that is what I like too see.
kiley_sean 11-07-2006, 03:21 PM My buddy made one pass down the 1/8th mile. Traction control on..no brake stalling, just rolling into the throttle and hit an 8.9X at 82mph. That's high 13's in the 1/4 bone stock w/ traction control on. Him and I both were amazed. He previously had a lightly modded 350Z that did a best of 9.0X after many passes and to see a heavier car with the same displacement go faster stock was shocking.

I would say Car and Drive has the most accurate test results of all the mags out there. Check out their site for correcting for weather. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...orweather.html
So the traction control slows it down? Is it similiar to mine where it cuts the fuel when it detects instability? If so then that is definitely a big hinderance. My car has a button to completely turn it off. Is a modification necessary to turn it off on the IS 350?
NOCTURNAL 11-08-2006, 01:13 AM I always like reading your kills. You hit some crazy ass speeds all the time.
:stickoutt

:devillook

abradic 11-08-2006, 03:14 AM So...no minor-modded 325ix's or 318's or 328's beating IS350's right? Just heading off THOSE stories before they propagate.
LOL, are you kidding, 325ix is a monster off the line. It will win an 1/8th mile race in stock form against ANY Lexus you can think of...we're talking buslegnths:devillook

For the 06 IS350's we have to do a so called foot dance to disable the Traction Control. Few pumps of the foot brake, few pumps of the e-brake in a certain sequence and it turns it off completely. I believe the 07's have a button that turns it off. Basically as soon as the car senses tire spin it pulls throttle and who knows what else, but definitely hurts 1/4 mile performance and takes away the fun factor.
agu845 11-08-2006, 12:06 PM If the other driver had somehow lost control of his car and crashed, you would have been in a WORLD of hurt, which reason number 527 not to race into triple digits.
Seriously, think about it..... if a possum or whatever had run out onto the road, if he' woulda lost control or had a tire blow, or whatever (you dont know if he's a drunk idiot do you?), would you have just kept driving, denying him any chance at survival, or would you have stopped and come back to help? Well, in either case, the justice system would crucify you. You'd be an instant felon, probably serve some time in jail, no doubt about it
I am as tempted as the next whenever I see a "supposedly fast" car, but taking it to 175 mph? Heck even 110 is ridiculous. I'm not trying to criticize you for what you did, 'cause we all know it was stupid, even if you got away with it. More like think about how instantly your life (and your loved ones') could be ruined by such a moronic impulsive thing to do.....I am also reminding myself here to be smart and careful, 'cause just like you, i find speed and competition intoxicating...
^nicely stated..take it to the track dudes.:)
