View Full Version : e36 m3 vs 2005 mustang gt
saint166 07-07-2006, 03:23 AM i went out for a drive tonight and met up with my son and his friend that was in town visiting . the boys wanted to come along so they piled in and we took off . a few moments later i pulled up beside a freinds 2005 mustang gt we slowed down to about 15 mph and he nailed first so im game and i go , he pulled on me by half a car when we shut it down at about 80 . then we went again this time i was ready and we both went at the same time but this time i pulled on him by a car and a half . not bad for a 9 yr old m3 with 2 passengers . p.s. i raced him when i was dead stock and beat him but he had his traction control on and until now i would never race him again i wanted to let him stew for a bit lol .

What did you race him up to when you beat him by a car?? Because even with traction control on a new GT with 300hp & 320lbs of torque isn't gonna make much different on top end especially but like you said you wont race him again when his traction control is off unless you want a hurting..I can see a stock m3 pulling stock 2003 GT mustang @ 260hp because my friend James did it with me in his car but thats dif. story vs a new 05/06 GT...
Spoolin' 07-07-2006, 05:42 AM Probably a bad driver, but hey a win is a win no matter what. Good kill.

xxjordan88 07-07-2006, 08:15 AM i think his son is like 18 or so, no as bad as it sounds
turnerNCM3 07-07-2006, 08:23 AM Maybe it was an automatic if GTs come that way?
phantom3 07-07-2006, 08:43 AM :confused
saint166 07-07-2006, 09:51 AM my son is 19 and so is his freind . having traction control on makes a huge diff when your tires start spinning i have had mine on and tried to take off hard and it just bogs out and when u hit second hard it does it again and in his gt with over 300 lbs od torque u get alot of bogging . when i hear stuff like this i really start to wonder if most of u guys on here really have any abilty or is most of what u know from reading about it . a little advice to some of u out there , have some faith in your rides and whats written by fellow bimmer enthusiast . p.s. his car is a manual and from what i could hear his shifting seemed good , its tough to tell when u are concentrating on your own driving
Spoolin' 07-07-2006, 10:03 AM Dont get offensive, no one is bashing you. The guys obviously a bad driver if hes getting pulled on by a stock e36 m3 with two kids in it.
Plus he shouldnt have been racing with the traction on in the first place. Silly pony owners :P
e36'n 07-07-2006, 10:05 AM I believe it for sure. I walked the same car from a 20kmh roll or so, by over a car length to 100kmh and was still pulling hard. Really surprised me. I didn't think that would happen at all.

saint166 07-07-2006, 10:45 AM just to clear something up . the time i raced him when he left his traction control on was a yr ago when i first got my car . since then i have done most of the usual bolt on mods . last nites race he didnt have his traction control on , the race a yr ago he just forgot to turn it off it happens .

you "killed" a 98GT in a 92 325? why do i find that not even remotely possible? what could you possibly have had done to the car?

MAJOR BULL SHIT LOL..!!
Itsablurr 07-07-2006, 02:07 PM MAJOR BULL SHIT LOL..!!
No, not major bullshit..... I have taken my share of '99+ GTs (260hp) with my 2.5L.... of course it's in a Z3 instead of a 3-er... and that was before I had the 3.73 gears- still running the stock 3.15.
One thing that people may not realize- BMWs have MUCH better gearing than the American cars, generally. On their standard manual transmissions, they have 4 gears to get to their 1:1 ratio, whereas we have 5 gears to 1:1. Our transmissions also start out with first gear much deeper, effectively multiplying the rear axle ratio significantly. From a standing start, a standard BMW 5 speed with 3.15 gears in the back is roughly the same in terms of torque multiplication as a GM or Ford 4 speed with 3.90 gears. And, as we know, the americans do NOT usually gear their rears that aggressively. Usually, you have something between 2.73 and 3.23.... and once in a while a 3.46.
For the sake of equalization, take 2 cars... both 3200lbs, both with the same transmission gearing, one with 190hp, and the other with, say, 225. The 190hp car has a 3.90 set of diff gears, and the 225hp car has a set of 3.23s. The 190 hp car will take the win easily. Gearing makes a HUGE difference. It's not called the poor man's supercharger for nothing.
Well this GT could have been a regular old BS Mustang with bumpers and makers of a GT. It did not sound like a V8 so i think it was a V6... I know i saw his ass in my rearview =) None of u were there so how can u say??
mount2010 07-07-2006, 04:59 PM MAJOR BULL SHIT LOL..!!
Those mid 90s GTs run 15s.
agmobb 07-07-2006, 06:12 PM Stang GTs are pretty sad. The 99+ are ok from 0-60 then they fall on their face. I would hope the 05+ fare better but I havent driven or raced one yet.
Lately all my races have been won in my truck. Gotta love the surprised look on ones face as a big ol truck passes them. ( im not talking about racing anything thats actually fast of course)

the latest gen are pretty quick... and you've always gotta look out for the cobras... ;)
shonuff 07-07-2006, 07:37 PM I've had both a mustang GT, and a E36 chipped 325i. The 325i was FASTER. The only time the Mustang was faster was in the first twenty feet of acceleration. Ford gears the rear end to be less and less aggressive as speed increases so as to make a transition to fifth, which is overdrive in a mustang. Bmw's manual transmissions don't have over drive, they are designed to always have some aggressive acceleration power, no matter what RPM you are at. I've also driven the New GT, and they aren't that impressive. I've seen my friend's 1995 M3, beat a 2001 Chipped S4 3 times consecutively, and that car is WAY faster than a Mustang GT. It's all in the driver. Sure traction makes some what of a difference, but if you're speed shifting without using the clutch pedal you can go substantially faster. An E36 getting beaten by a Mustang GT is purely operator error:FACT!
JaredM3 07-08-2006, 12:48 AM Besides the new "faster" GT mustang which I havent raced in my M3, but Smoked one last summer when I had my Eclipse GSX with a couple of bolt-ons and a bigger turbo.
But I have races more then a fair share of 4.6 pre 05' GTs and to sum it up, I have not lost one one yet. I have almost lost my hearing off a few of them though, just loud and annoying.
m3chaser 07-08-2006, 07:39 AM anything can happen on the street!
as for the fella that has the 92 325is, i imagine you might beat my car if you are turbo'ed!
