View Full Version : E34 trans problem - extremely hard shift

Any help appreciated here - my 1994 530i has been at the transmission shop for 3 months now and I think they have given up trying to figure out what is wrong with my auto trans.

When transmission gets warm driving along at city speed, the whole car will bang and shudder as if the transmission has been shifted into reverse. This will happen seemlingly randomly but always at the same speed range and only when trans is warm.

They have replaced the trans with a completely new one (after rebuilding mine twice) and no change, they have also changed out the trans computer and no change. Now they are making noises about wiring harness. I think they are stumped and don't want to work on it any more.

Yes, I know its time to get a new trans shop, but don't want to have to start again at the beginning of the diagnosis cycle.

Any clues or similar experiences?

Has anyone looked at the rear dif? Drive line?

Well, I asked if it could somehow be the diff - perhaps locking up, but I was told it couldn't be that.

I have also scoured this and other boards looking for a diff problem which behaves like this and haven't found any evidence of it yet.

Not anymore, was changed out under warranty 50K ago.

Pardon for asking, but I'm new to this car (and board) ..... how could the engine replacement factor into this?

I had an E30 with almost the same issues but mine was the torque converter. GL!
