Ok let me start by saying before I bought my Z3 I was talking to Hugo and asking questions about the cars in general, and told him "I'm not the kind of driver thats going to be posting in the Kill section"
:lol
The other night my niece needed a ride home, she'd never been in a convertible before and asked if I'd drive her home I said sure no problem.
On the way out the door the wife says to me "No driving fast with your niece in the car" I'm thinking no dear ... but on the way home I'll be alone!

So on the way home (I'm alone in the car) and this Honda Civic with a drop, mags and a muffler come up beside me and just as he gets to my door he mats it, so I drop it in second hit the red line then shift to third by this time I'm pulling on him but had to let off cause the light up ahead had change to red.
So we're both at the light waiting for it to change then we go for it again. We both take off pretty even, I'm thinking "this lil Honda is pretty fast but my bimmer should take him No problem" I hit the red line in first and shift to second and WTF??? my shifter knob came off in my hand I look down in disbelief kinda fumbled around trying to put the shifter knob back on and all the while the little Honda's pulling ahead of me! I shifted to third but it was too late he had me beat, Anyway I caught up to him a little further up the road at a light gave him the thumbs up and drove home.

I think I'm going to get some crazy glue to stick the knob on
oh well it was fun while it lasted tho! Maybe next time I'll post a win!

sounds like you had a fun time, have you tried out the whalen shiftknob, you may like it more than the stock one?

haha happened to me today...some kids in a beige 93 accord lx with 2 spares on it (no joke) and a muffler came up behind me, down to second and tryed to go by..i was crusing in fourth, went down to second and my shifter came off. just threw it in the seat and shifted with metal and still beat him good.

stupid bmw for making shifters like that.. i always wondering why they dont just use detents.. they are totally non servicable too, if you need to remove the knob it will never go back on stay on like it did.

LOL, the shift knob in the back seat happens to the best of us! even when i just grab the metal after it comes off and keep shifting, the time you lose from the initial WTF! kills you. better luck next time.

Same thing happened to me.. It's taught me to be more attentive to my shifting when I'm racing, but it's still freakin' annoying. And whenever someone drives my car, it pops out in their hand without fail.. I get so embarassed :shifty

I laugh when I read stories like this. Poor shift nob.

This is at least the third "kill" story I've read in which the shift knob came off the shifter. Why is this such a problem for so many people?

It isn't. Its a problem for 3 people so far minus the 10 odd plus people on the forums that haven't said anything.

With age comes deterioration... Go figure...

if you really shift like a mad man it will come off...but its not any quicker to yank on it like that.

I took a close look at my shifter knob there are little teeth that are supposed to hold the knob on the shifter, a few of the teeth on mine are broken off ... so now it comes off with little effort, But yes in the thrill of the moment I was a mad man! and loved every second of it!:alright

Haha that made me laugh.:lol

I don't think it's an age thing, either, because I saw a video of Tiff driving the new Z4 M roadster and the shift nob came off it too. Classic BMW.:cool

It makes me laugh everytime I hear about it happening to someone else, because it has happened to me like 202034 times in my old e36 and a few times in the 5er. I guess BMW never thought to reinforce the shift nobs with screws.
