I live in Chapel Hill (Southern Village) and I am planning on starting a local BMW "club." There are a ton of BMWs in my neighborhood. Any advice on where to have it?

In my neighborhood (and in Chapel Hill), there are a ridiculous amount of BMWs and nice ones, mostly new. There's also a lot of classics (2002s, etc.) Who would be willing to drive over here for a really good meet with lots of cars? Lots of M3s and a few M5s, you know, car...uh hum... BMW enthusiasts. I know that clubs start small and grow larger, but I'm pretty sure that we could get a good turnout on the first couple meets. I'm looking at an M3 right now; if that works out, you can count on a club in the Chapel Hill area. I was gonna make flyers and distribute them to people that I see. I have never really been to too many local car shows and I was wondering what kind of stuff, other than BMWs, that people would want to find at a local meet. In other words, what do you want to see that would make you drive over to Chapel Hill to have a meet? Please post any and/or all recommendations as to what you want to see. Thanks!

I'm a couple hours away in New Bern, but I'm from Durham and frequent the RDU area often (this weekend AAMOF).

I'm the track events coordinator for the Tarheel Sports Car Club (don't worry, its NOT affiliated with UNC for all you 'ABC' fans) and the Triangle Z Club.

Anyway... I'm relatively new to the bimmer scene, as I just picked up my '87 325 (with some tasteful mods) in April. If you guys get together this weekend, I may try to meet up as well. Plenty of Bimmer owners in THSCC.

I'd like find some people for a drive to the Tail of the Dragon area. It's on the NC/TN border, about three hours from Charlotte on I-40. I've been once in early June with two E46s and it was awesome, just drove the Dragon. I'd like to hit the Cherohala loop this time. tailofthedragon.com/cherohala.html

Any takers? Please post times you can do it and what car you'll bring.

Can you only go weekends or mid-week? Weekends are packed this time of the year. Would be funner to go when it's less crowded. I've got one or two around Mooresville who might be down, we met in Statesville last month and took I-40 to the Dragon.

Raleigh is quite far from it. The town nearby is Robbinsville, and Google says it's 340 miles. If you drive that far, you'd better plan to stay the night/weekend.

I just ordered some 235/40YR-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s and I'm gonna get them put on before. :D

Hey all. Any suggestions on a local tint shop- where to go? Looking for quality, professional job of course... not some hack shop.

Thanks!

Also what is the legal limit in NC / Raleigh? Are the cops sticklers about illegal tint?

I believe sun protection LLC is pretty good. My mom used them to put window film in her house. They're auto window tinting seems pretty good, and they use Formula One film, which is supposed to be the best from what I hear. They're located in Cary. Here's their website:

Hey guys just moving back into the area next week to head back to school. Triad area here. Was around all last year and unfortunately never made it to any of the meets. Looking to get into the scene (we've got a big one up in the MD/DC area).

Any meets planned for September yet? NCEuro? Bimmerforums meet?

Also, please recommend your favorite tint shops between Winston-Salem and Raleigh. Not looking to go any further east than Raleigh. I am becoming an NC resident soon and need to have my illegal 20% tint stripped off, just to pass inspection :(

Thanks for the tint suggestion... btw what how are the tint laws down here? What is the legal limit? 32% or maybe I read it wrong?

Are most tint places pretty 'strict' do they follow the laws or do most go beyond?

you read it correctly, the law is a 32% "net" tint, basically 35% on each individual window other than the windshield, which is really lame IMO :( The cops dont seem to care so much about 20%, but some friends of mine with 5% have gotten tickets for it. I have 20% all around and havent havent had a problem so far (knock on wood) and have been next to many troopers, sheriffs, etc at stoplights/on hwy and they just look over and then look away...I also had 20% on my land rover and didnt have a problem in those 2.5 years either

most tint places will give you whatever % tint you want, but for anything illegal you have to pay a bit more and use cash so there is no record of the transaction. I remember the 3M tint shop on capital blvd was gonna charge me a $100 fee on top of the normal cost of the job for 20%, and they would only take cash, it was gonna be like $425 or so which is high. I got mine done for $200 back home in rocky mount where I know the shop owner.

when inspection time rolls around you just have to go somewhere that you have a connection or a ghetto place where they just dont care, or will accept a bribe, etc. :paranoid: i.e. just dont go to jiffylube or something expecting to pass

hope this helps, good luck

Yeah I had 13% on my old car and never got a second glance from Johnny Law...but no dice with state inspection, I had to take it to a buddy's shop to get it passed...if you all wanna know I paid $265 which IMO is a little high, but they did a great job and never hassled me about the leagalities, and this was in PA where the leagal limit is 70%...Ouch!

Dakar Yellow is hot! You don't see many; I can't remember the last time I saw one. A little while ago, there was a 2005 M3 Individual ZCP in Dakar Yellow. The seller said it was perhaps "1 of 5" in the country! That's exclusive right there! Good Luck and hope to see your car at a triangle meet sometime!

FYI: If anybody is interested I'm heading up to Asheville Friday afternoon (via I40)so if anybody wants to run and maybe have some fun in the mountains then PM me!
