View Full Version : Fender Rolling Party and BBQ 2-3 weeks from now!
EEEEeeee36 06-28-2006, 06:01 PM I have a buddy who has an actual lift in his garage. I have a compressor and pneumatic tools. Popping off all four wheels would take a matter of minutes (lift the car, pull the bolts). The guy who has the lift knows a guy with a roller that we could borrow for a nominal fee. He livees in North Renton just off of 405 (Exit 6), and we could have a fender rolling GTG and BBQ. I need to do mine and I know a few of you guys may need to do yours. We could do it in 2-3 weeks on a Saturday (or Sunday). Cost would be very nominal - a small donation for use of the lift and for borrowing the roller. Who wants in?
EDIT: POSTPONED!!! See the last post of the thread. After Meister's baby is born we can re-schedule, probably in a couple weeks.
EEEEeeee36 06-28-2006, 06:57 PM BTW a few VW guys will be there too, as the owner of the lift drives a nice 20th AE GTI and posted up on VWVortex. Should be a great German Car GTG!
///w3fl3x 06-28-2006, 07:45 PM I would be interested in this.
July is really busy for me though cause of all the drives. August would be better for me. I've pretty much requested every weekend off in july. :eyecrazy

OOooo...working weekends FTL!

Bengali86 06-28-2006, 08:47 PM I am intrested in meeting fellow PNW bimmer nuts and VW people,
I do have a friend (hot redhead) who has been talking about needing her fenders rolled, but she is not a Bimmer chick (damn the world) she is a DSM girl (mitsubishi) if she showed up with me, would hell rain down on her and I?
of course we would donate for the lift/roller ;)

As long as she truly is hot, and she dresses as if it's 95deg outside... sure we could do that. :D

Crack the paint? I've never had the paint crack from rolling fenders... we are not going to be pulling them, just rolling the lips.
I can understand if you don't want to do it yourself though.
ElSupremo 06-28-2006, 11:25 PM I'm definately interested, if I have the day off. I'm gonna need my daughters rolled for sure, and maybe my Touring. I've got some vacation in about 3 weeks, also.
///w3fl3x 06-28-2006, 11:37 PM I'm assuming this will probably be either the 15th or 22nd?
The 22nd is the breast cancer drive. Sounds like it will be a big drive with some very exotic cars. :D

I'm down for driving for breasts. Exotic breasts are cool too... I'll take em any way I can get em.
I'm thinkin' the 15th or the 29th. If we get a lot of interest and Meister (the guy with the lift) doesn't have anything else going that day then we'll do it the 15th. That's two weeks after anything else was going on so it should be good (BMW CCA Dyno Day 7/1; Drive 7/22; 4th of July...7/4...).
EEEEeeee36 06-29-2006, 01:29 AM Okay we're going to do the 15th. It's 2.5 weeks away and nothing big is going on that day.

I was just like you until researched and decided its not worth risk. I searched and came up with many results of the dangers when it comes to DIY rolling fenders and not cracking paint but here's a tip i found...
Caution: there is a risk of cracking the paint along the edge of the fender lip when performing this procedure. Use a heat gun to warm up the paint before rolling and you will have less chance of cracking, but there is no guarantee. I did crack the paint on one side over a 1cm section, but this was partly due to the paint having been damaged previously by rubbing tires. A little touch up paint is all that was needed to correct the situation.
The rear fenders flex alot ive seen it done before which scares me:eyecrazy
Good luck and do alittle research so you guys can doit right.

Hey Jess, count me in for the 15th. I still need my fenders to be stretched a little. Anyone have a heat gun?
and of course I'm always down for driving for Breasts! :buttrock

exactly, you need to use a heat gun (and get the paint reasonably hot) because if you don't , the paint will crack. I've done a fair share of fender rolling and you need to keep heat in the paint or it will crack. Best to have a friend run the heat gun while you work the roller.

Thanks Cramer. I know that a couple of the guys that will be there have done it a few times, so I'll bring my heat gun. We'll have enough hands to help out!

I've had that up for months bro! I'm totally looking forward to that! :alright
Okay so a few people have said that the 15th won't work... and a few others have told me that they are actually doing the Long Beach drive. Would the 29th or 30th be better?
Put it to a vote. Post up 15th or 29th please!

cramer 06-30-2006, 04:14 PM the 30th is waterwagens and there are a few events going on the 29th as well for the show so you may want to check with Dave to see if he's even going to be home to host it that weekend ;)
EEEEeeee36 06-30-2006, 07:23 PM Thanks, he hasn't gotten back to me on that... but previously he said that would work. I'll double check.

Nah, just hanging out. I don't have any rubbing issue at the autocross and track. :D
EEEEeeee36 07-02-2006, 03:37 AM You know what guys, Meister just got back to me and said that he forgot he had a Lamas class all that weekend (his wife is pregnant, obviously). I did that before too... annoying as hell you have to take a whole weekend and go for 6-8 hours each day. :rolleyes
29th is out too as his lift is going to be occupied in preparation of WaterWagens going on the next day.
Looks like this will be August. I'll suggest a date when I get a chance to look at all the calendars again.. :dunno
Any recommendations?

todor 08-10-2006, 02:34 AM hey i just saw this and i might be interested... so "rolling" means removing that inner lip of the fender, right? does anyone know what width of tires fit in the back of an E36 M3 ('98) when the fenders are rolled? can't this just be done with a regular metal file? or a rotary tool from a hardware store?

AAAAaaaaaaaHHHHH!!!! NO! :nono
It means you use a specialized tool to fold in the fender lip. It usually gives you almost 1/2" extra clearance. We are not going to be cutting anything!

Darth Maul 09-09-2006, 02:35 PM So can anyone pull and stretch out the fenders a bit?? lol.
s_ribs 09-09-2006, 06:48 PM ^ Trouble is going to be finding a shop that is willing to do it. I'd have to check with Eddie before I can say if we would do it or not. Regardless of who you go to, know one will guarantee that your paint won't crack for even a standard fender roll even though it is unlikely. Stretching the fender will only increase the chance of that. Are you certain they need to be stretched? With the proper wheel offset you should really need that much.

s_ribs 09-10-2006, 06:41 PM I think so, otherwise it would rub, no?
I wouldn't assume so. I have no clue what wheel size, offset, and tire brand/model you are going with, along with rear camber specs on your car. Those will make all the difference. If I remember correctly, you have already cut the inner fender lip off so you should have much more room than usual as is.
EEEEeeee36 09-11-2006, 12:22 AM i need rolled fenders. BAD
Yeah those 245s you threw on there look phat, but like you said they rub on a bump. We'll get you hooked up bro.

SiGmA 09-12-2006, 09:03 PM So, when's this party? I need to get mine rolled before I can fit my 255's, and they will look much hotter on my car then stacked in the garage...

I'm running stock size (245/40/17 rear, 225/45/17 front) with Kumho Exsta ASX tires. They had good ratings on tirerack.com, but they're still cheap tires... they may be to blame for my slipping on the track.

Damn... 265s? When I asked that question, there were guys saying you could run that on 9" rims, but with HEAVILY rolled and slightly flared fenders, and about -4* of camber. :dunno

1bad m3 09-20-2006, 08:43 PM hey a quick question to those who have/ are going to be rolling them... 1/ will you take before and after pics and post them for me... and 2 how "extreame" of a roll is possible ... i would like an Extreame roll that looks almost like it has flares is that possible... something along the lines of this look

turbodefrost 09-22-2006, 03:47 PM ^that thing looks like he bought an entire new custom panel. i don't think you can do that with a fender roller?

You'll need Rieger fender arches for that look. To get even close to that you'll need to cut and weld the inner fenders - the won't flare much without that kind of modification. You can push them out a little, but not much.
We are just going to be flattening the lip at this fender rolling day. Heat Gun and Fender Roller only.
EEEEeeee36 09-22-2006, 05:32 PM so when is this Jesse i need to get this done 18's sitting in the garage is ftl
I left a message with Meister earlier today. Dyno Day coming up soon also, so I'm thinking next weekend the 30th, or at the latest 10/7.
Im down for a dyno day any time after nov 1. Gotta see what the m52 is putting down. Should be a nice jump from my m20, which at our last dyno day put down a whopping 133whp/143 ft/lb tq. Wahoo

We will probably have one in Mid-November also. It just depends on how many people are in 'need'. I know of at least 5 (including me) that are going to run in October.
///w3fl3x 09-22-2006, 08:43 PM I need one. October would be better though.
I work 8-3 on the 30th then off to meet everyone in southcenter around 4 before heading up to HIN. :)
turbodefrost 09-30-2006, 06:15 PM so what's the official date on the fender rolling? i can't make it the 7th, unless that's sunday... i'm not sure... cause i'm in spokane that weekend on friday/saturday. maybe the next weekend?
EEEEeeee36 10-01-2006, 06:13 AM I thought you neede this quick? :D
Sunday may work. We were shooting for a dyno day on 10/14, but maybe we can do it 10/8. Meister got back to me and said 10/7 should be good, but he needs to check with the wifey first. He has a brand new baby so he's really busy right now.
turbodefrost 10-02-2006, 01:06 AM ok, well let me know. Yeah i do need this done, but i can't back out on goin to spokompton for that friday and saturday. So sunday would be perfect. and maybe i'll be able to make it to the dyno day as well!
