My mechanic called me today and said that some rubber piece of the flywheel is cracked and has deteriorated. Does this mean that I need a new flywheel or is it some standalone part?

he has never done any kind of transmission work on a BMW at all.

I went to the shop to take a look at it today. The problem with the flywheel is that the middle piece of the flywheel in the center spins almost freely (it's a piece with 6 holes for driveshaft bolts)

bump. I really need this info. I took the flywheel to the dealer. The tech took a glimpse and said it should move like that a bit to reduce vibrations. .

Also, I forgot to mention it, but my mechanic said that my clutch did not look THAT bad. Can anything else cause "slips"?

It shouldn't look that bad, I'm assuming that you would only noticed these "slips" under spirited driving therefore under normal conditions it would be fully functional. Change the clutch, you'll noticed the difference.

actually i had hard time taking off from the hill too and it would even slip in 5th. Also, I just visited like 3 transmission shops and one BMW shop and all said that my flywheel looks good and that the clutch was definately slipping (based on the colors). I also found it weird that both pieces of flywheel could be rotated a bit, but after reading up on it, I found out that dual-mass flywheels are supposed to rotate by approximately 10 degrees.

I think that rubber thing is the guibo, not the flywheel..>???
