I was out enjoying my amazing new Z4 and was coming to a slow down for a right turn. I had come to a stop, placed the shifter into 1st and pulled off and as I did so I heard and felt a massive thud. It was the sound and feeling that one woulds expect if one went into a pothole but there was no potholes and nothing that I hit. No warning lights came on but I came to a complete stop put myself back in first and pulled off and no problems at all. I know that I did not hit anything, I know I did not mishift as I was hardly moving so certainly could not have over revved

Any body have any ideas??

BTW: My new Z4i is a dream and has all the power I need for fun. I know the Si has more power but am thrilled by the power of the i and I stand in awe of what the m can do

Thanks

Chris

Are you sure you got the shifter all the way into gear? I've had that happen a couple of times where I neglect to shove it all the way and it makes a loud boom as it slips out into neutral. It's no big deal if that happened, and if it isn't reoccuring then I wouldn't worry too terribly much about it.

I suppose it is possible that I was not all the way into gear. Wow it was a scary sound. Do you know on a mechanical level what is actually making that sound? Thanks for your reply

Yeah it scared me bad enough to make me pull over the first time. I really can't think of anything in the gearbox or the engine big enough to make a deep noise like that, but it could be the gears slipping apart or something. It really sounded like banging on a huge drum, right? A very hollow, very deep thud. Fear not, all is well.

My car has done the same thing on numerous occasions throughtout the years ive owned the car and I have had no probolems at all with the transmission as a result. Itr is caused by the clutch not engaging completely when shifting in our out of gear.
