Hi! I'm new.
I just joined the BMW club a few weeks ago and am now the owner of a beautiful 97 E36 M3. But I have a problem. It appears either my subwoofer is nonexistant or not working, because the stock HK stereo in my car has no low-end whatsoever.
So this may sound like a dumb question, but where is the sub located for the stock HK system in an E36? I assumed it was under back shelf with the rear speakers but when I looked in the trunk I only saw the two speakers sticking out and nothing else. So am I looking in the wrong place or did I buy a car without a sub?

You are detecting an issue with all BMWs I've heard. They have no bass.
But I thought the E36 had underdeck subs? Is that the 6x9 dual woofer deal?

The sub is really 6x9's in the rear deck mine were in a sealed enclosure made of black plastic. I yours turn out to be bad or not there I just took mine out if you need some.
Yeah I've just got the 2 6x9 woofers, but I thought there was supposed to be an actual subwoofer too. So I guess I'll just spend the money on a good sub because right now the audio sounds like ass. In the meantime I can enjoy the bass output from my exhaust...

I know the Z3 has a HK sub in-between the sears where you can take off the top part of the case and then 4 screws for to remove it from the case, and 4 screws to remove the speaker. The one I replaced was a 6 1/2 HK sub, going to replace it again as the sub I have in there is pretty weak (Kenwood) Will make another post for suggestions on that sub

Ok, I deleted my messages, now everyone can be happy again :), Yeah the Z3 has a box inbetween the seats where you can just simply pop off the top and remove the 6 1/2 HK sub, I am still looking for a good sub to put in there. I replaced my front kick panel 5 1/4 with kicker 2 ways that really give me some good highs. I have two Audiobahns in the trunk with a Rockford Fosgate 301m. Sounds really good, I don't like the kenwood I replaced my torn KB 6 1/2 sub with though. need a really good mid sub to put in there.
