View Full Version : "Cleaner waxes", what's the word? Mless5 06-22-2006, 02:17 PM I got some Meguira's clay and it came with cleaner wax. What is it and how safe is it? What should I expect? Thanks Silent Killer 06-22-2006, 02:38 PM It's pretty much a mild polish and a liquid wax in one. They aren't as good as a dedicated polish and high quality wax, but it should be safe on your car. awahl63 06-22-2006, 05:18 PM It's safe...it's packed full of fillers. It'll clean the paint as fill in swirlmarks and light scratches. Durability sucks though Mless5 06-22-2006, 09:36 PM ...and if I put a layer or two of some carnauba? awahl63 06-22-2006, 10:07 PM If you put a second layer of cleaner wax it will "clean" the first layer off. You can't layer cleaner waxes so one layer should be good. Mless5 06-22-2006, 10:33 PM I meant second layer of just regular carnauba, not cleaning deal. awahl63 06-23-2006, 08:49 AM Oh yeah...you'll be fine swmnbmw 06-23-2006, 05:04 PM mmmmm oh really, so i can use cleaner wax to help fill in those damn swirls then just use regular wax on top of it, will this last and protect just like a regular wax will last this way? awahl63 06-23-2006, 08:48 PM It won't last as long as the regular wax would because to bond properly it needs a proper surface. A cleaner wax is a lot like a glaze. Take Clearkotes Red Moose Glaze (good product) will fill and make the paint look very wet and should be topped with a wax to keep the fillers in. The glaze will take away from the durability of the wax though. Andrew TropicalDetail 06-24-2006, 07:44 PM It depends on the type of cleaner wax. A lot of waxs/sealents are cleaner/waxes because they have a mild cleaner to help the wax/sealent to bond to the surface. Some cleaner waxes are layarable, it depends on the strength of the cleaning action. Meg's NXT is actually a cleaner wax (according to Chad Pennigton and Mike Phillips' from Meguiars) that is layerable, and features very mild cleaning agents to help the surface bond. The cleaner wax you have is A12 (I think) which has been around for 30+ years. It does a decent job of protecting, and is a very mild in its cleaning abilities. The fact it has been around for so long is kind of a testement to its protection. That said, there are better products out there in the cleaner wax department. You could try ColorX, which is much, much improved, and works better with clearcoat/basecoat paints. ColorX followed by GoldGlass paste is a nice, pretty durable package, IMO.
