Hi Guys;
I am having trouble in putting the rubber gasket on the base of the chrome door mirrors. I tried soaking in hot water, using a heat gun, and slicone spray, all ending with failure. Any tips of the trade will be highly appreciated.

If you're talking about the larger/later "flag" style, cleaning & softening the gasket like you have helps. The gasket has little channels in it that surround the base of the mirror, and those will usually "stick" the gasket to the mirror to facilitate installation. Maybe a judicious dab of black silicone adhesive will help you?

Actually those channels are the problem, as there aren't any slots inside the base of the mirror for those channels to snap in. I will first try to make some slots inside the base of the mirror or remove them at all. I think it is a cheap german engineering crap!

That's the first time I have heard German engineering and cheap in the same sentence - crap maybe (as in it was a Monday morning production item), but cheap,never!

Hope you sort the gasket thing though.

well, I finally got them on! I first removed the base from the mirror to make it easy to work on. Then, I used the heat gun to soften the rubber. I also used a small flat head screw driver to aid the lip to fit around the base. I worked on a kitchen table. After several minutes of elbow grease, it was on. Finally, I used masking tape to hold the gasket in place,while the base sitting on table. Without the tape, the gasket will come off as soon as you take it in your hand. The whole process was more time consuming (both mirrors) than putting the Crane X700 in the car.

It's ALWAYS the little things!

Is there different sized mirror rubbers between the trapezium shape and the flag style? Could be wrong rubbers?

Mine are flag type, later style. I think it is a design problem. In the near future, I will make my own gaskets using heavy duty rubber sheets, or dye them using liquid rubber. The factory gaskets get hard over time allowing moisture penetrate thru the base, eventually causing rust.
