..my 2002 still has the factory bumpers on it that stick out like a mile

i wana take em off but my dad keeps telling me its illegal and against the law and all this bull

so my question is. can i really remove my bumpers without disobeying and state laws? i live in california

It probably is illegal to run no bumpers. Could you get away with it...maybe.

One thing you could do, is shorten your bumpers. What i did with mine (originally) was remove the bumpers and throw away the stupid shocks that come on them. Then what i did was take a piece of pipe and used that as my new bumper "shock". Shortened it a bunch and tucked them right into the body. I think someone sells a KIT for like 70 bux, but its something you can do if you have the skills.

OR, you could find a set of bumpers of a pre '74 model year.

I think you'll be more poor when a cop gives you a fix it ticket considering you are in Cali. Advice would be to go the diy route. There is a link that shows you how to shorten your bumpers. IIRC, it only involves a drill and some bolts/screws.

Basically, you drill a hole in the bumper shocks to empty all the fluid. This will let you compress in your bumper shocks and shorten it. While it's compressed, you'll want to put a screw or bolt in the hole you made to keep it compressed.

You can also paint the chrome portion of the bumper like some people to give it a different look as well. Mine is all black with no chrome showing.

If run with no bumbers you can get away with this with no problem for awhile. You may claim that you are about to repaint the car, blahhhh. They can give you warning or a small ticket. After 3 warnings you may get a huge ticket.

The worst thing that can happen is this: you run into a bimmer hater cop (with a small dick) that doesnt like the way those "supposed-to-be-on" bumpers look like + you have some other issues or upgrates on your car. You get a notice to take the car to the inspection facility where they will nail you for every single thing thats is not leagal or broken/missing. Dont do it- get a huge ticket. The irony is that they might make you put the new bumper shocks on there with the bumpers! Thats what happed to me a few weeks ago.

I would remove em taking some actions towards making it look somewhat legal. A skirt? Get creative with that. Draw em bumpers on there if you have to.
