View Full Version : 245 or 255 (35/18) Is the +8lbs unsprung worth added traction?

Greetings,

Decided to pick up Goodyear F1 GS-D3's to go on my 18x8.5" BBS RK II's. I've already ordered them thru the Tire Rack tonight to take advantage of the $100 rebate expiring today, but I know they are not shipping them until probably Monday, so I hopefully can still change the size.

Here's my delimna...I currently have 245-35-18 T1S's all around...plenty of tread left but they've become noisy from 8k miles and forgetting an alignment after suspension work. I ordered 245 GY F1's, but am now thinking of going with 255's all around for added traction and rim protection. However the 255's are 2lbs ea heavier than the 245's.

Will that 8lbs of added unsprung weight have more negative effects on performance and not be worth benefit of added traction? Or will I not even notice 8lbs unsprung weight? My friends E46M3 definitely got slower going from 225/255 to 255/275, as we were even before but I now pull him.

F1's are supposed to be pretty sticky. Maybe 245's will be fine? Take the poll please. Jim from TR, feel free to chime in anytime, and catch my order before shipping if you think I should change to 255's.

PS, from what I researched, I shouldn't have any rubbing issues considering I am stock height, have 10mm spacer front, and am running added negative camber.

Thanks guys.

stay with the 245's. I wouldn't put 255's unless I was running a 9" wide wheel. Saying that I am running 255's on a 9" wheel and I have lost some power seeing that I have added more rotation mass to the car. Even though my wheels are around 20lbs or less, the tires and bigger size still hurts my 1/4 mile performance. But again I got the 17x9"s with 255's to help with traction around corners not just for show.

And remember its your money and your car so get what you want.

Edit: Forgot to add I have the F1's on right now, I love them for both dry and wet traction. I think these will be my only street tire for the M3 and other performance cars I will own. And they do very well on the track with the right tire pressures.

thanks for the input. Yes, the prev owners put the BBS's on in that size...I won't complain...the 18's look great, though I probably would have gone the 17x9 route too if the car came with OEM's. Better performance and less harsh over bumps.

I've got the F1's on the wife's 330i and love them. Though I did see a thread about the outside shoulder not doing so well at the track (not that I'm tracking the car...yet) You haven't had problems with this?

Anyone else with opinions on 245 vs 255?
