changed the oil pan and the car is running like a top. I was surprised at how easy it was to change. only needed to remove the nuts holding the motor mounts to the subframe, lift the motor maybe 2 inches (used a bottle jack on the A/C compressor braket to help hold the weight) and the pan slid to the front. Since the pan was off, I took a look at the rods, main bearing caps, oil pump and chain, al were torqued to spec and clean. It didn't look like having 490K km. Those M10 motors run forever if taken care off, like regular oil changes.

somebody rebuilt it, or at least it has been honed with new rings and bearings installed at some point. I had a car similar to yours with less miles thoug. It run like champ (I mean fast for such a beater). The motor was the only good thing on it, the rest was crap.

M10 has good bearings, bores and rings, but still they crap out. On mine the oil pump went at 50 miles. One valve burnt and the oil rings crapped out (started smoking) at 10000 miles. The previous owner had this done in 1989, so they put the motor together with some honing and it run another 125000 miles. When I sold the car it had 225 and runnin strong with good sompression, etc.

Glad to hear you are back up and running.
My buddy's 320i is still going strong so M10 motors are tough.

When I get my car running, I plan at some point visting my sister, in NJ.
If I get down to your area, I will look you up.

later,
J
