Hello again all,

I am really enjoying driving my '88 635 CSi around, but it is starting to get a little WARM:mad . I thought I just had a leak and needed to replace seals and recharge, but the rear A/C blows as cold as it should. The front A/C doesn't blow cold at all (just about ambient air temp).

Any ideas where to start?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Cheers!

The front AC expansion valve is probably leaking or not working. It needs to be changed or eventually the rear will also blow hot air. Hope this helps.

Thanks KAR15!

Where is front A/C expansion valve located and any idea who might carry one? I checked with a few online stores and they have all but the front with rear A/C.

Cheers!

My 89 does not start out blowing cold but takes a few minutes to get up to speed.
Is this normal? The faster I go, the colder it gets too.

The front and rear AC units have separate expansion valves and evaporators.
The front one is somewhere behind the center console, PITA. I believe that the expansion valve is the same for all e24/e28 in the front. You will need to VERIFY that though! I would have a shop (or yourself) put in a dye to check where your system is leaking or not working. It is worth the $ before you start taking things apart or change the wrong defective part. BTW, I do have some new AC parts I want to sell.

Hello All,

When I bought the car and was driving it home from Charleston last summer the front A/C was working and then it either got weak or quit.

What A/C parts do you have? I am wondering if I don't just have a problem with the temperature control switch/circuit? Changing the knob from hot to cold has no effect at all. It does blow cooler air than if it is just the vent???

I am not at all thrilled with the prospect of getting in the dash:mad . Everything seems like it was put together well, but not intended to ever come apart:confused .

Thanks again for the insight!

You should take your car in to have the AC checked out. They can simply recharge it and put a dye in to see where it may be leaking. It may be as simple as a recharge, a small leak, or it might be more. At any rate it is BEST to take it in to a shop so they can diagnose the problem.
