View Full Version : What went wrong with your 8?
Antrieb 06-15-2006, 03:29 PM I'm thinking I'll sell my heavilly modified e34 and get a lower mileage 850ci with a 6-speed next summer.
Would $12-13k be a reasonable guess for a pirce if it has ~85kmi?
Anyway, I was just wondering what some typical problems e31 owners have with their cars.
Thanks in advance!
TerryY 06-15-2006, 10:27 PM The buyers guide here has a comprehensive list of problems to look for.

Be prepare to spend a lot for fix up if you buy too cheap. You are in the edge of cheap at $12 to $13k so be prepared.
If you are looking for a highly modifiable car the E31 won't be it:( Most of the tuners sold out of their stock and abandoned us long ago.
But it is the best Ride I have ever had and I wouldn't trade it for anything:)
Antrieb 06-16-2006, 01:12 PM Thanks for the link!
I wouldn't mod it that much, just do some suspension work, stagered m par wheels, CSI front and rear, and maybe a twin turbo down the road :evil2
Saabparts 06-16-2006, 02:59 PM Hey Guys!
I bought my 850i in 1998. I have had lots of fun, and headaches with this car. It is wonderful to drive, and everybody wants to know "What is it"?
A few thing s that I have had to replace:
Clutch at 80K......Previous owner was rough on 1st one.
Brake Booster......Some moron put ATF in the system, and ruined it.
P/S Hoses...........ATF again....Ruined hoses..
Both Fuel Pumps...Advanced AP has them cheaper than anyone...
A/C Freon Conversion.....Needed to be R134
SunRoof Rails.......Worn badly
WindShield........Glue gave up on mirrior, and it fell, and cracked the 1st one.
Headliner..........Foam fell apart, and it fell on my head...
Keys................Had to order from Germany...Only got one with car...
Other than that the car has a small oil leak....Runs real strong, and the six speed is awesome...
I have done all the work myself so I saved tons on money....It is a very complicated car, and difficult to work on. The brake booster replacement was one of the most difficult things I have ever done to a car....Well, except that Delorean Transaxle....But, that a whole different story....
Good luck!

Antrieb 06-20-2006, 08:22 AM lol you should see me when I'm away at school... I turn in to the biggest post whore out there with the fast internet.
PS: are there any other 8-series forums out there? This one doesn't seem to get much action...
TerryY 06-20-2006, 08:50 AM The biggest gathering of a group of 8 owners is in Roadflys E31 section.
Not many of us here.

Some bmw power steering systems use ATF, but wtf! ATF in the brake booster! That just blows.
I'm surpised that you've had no major problems other than those two which were accidents. Boy I want an 8 now.
TerryY 07-10-2006, 08:32 PM The 8 series has a single high pressure hydraulic system that feeds fluid to both the power steering and the power brakes.
The single reservoir for Pentosin seems to be topped off with ATF/PS fluid way too often and it can be very ex$pensive to flush and replace components.
The worst part is when no one knows the proper method of checking level in the resevoir and overfill it so it eats the paint under it when it overflows :mad
