I'm also looking to do an oil change, but anywhere in the nyc area is good for me. I called little garage and they want $105 for an oil change, $600 for inspection II, I was wondering if anywhere else has better rates.

Ummmm..... DIY and then you wont have to worry about spending $105. Its really not that hard. Any idiot could change oil (just go to jiffy lube and see)

That comes out to about $5.33 a quart. The BMW oil from BMW of Manhatten is $5.25 a quart, so it's still cheaper to get it from BMW - although not by much, so then it's a preference/convenience thing.

Best place to do an oil change is in your driveway or garage. Street if you have to.

Doesn't take 8 quarts... What a ripoff though. It should cost no more than $30 to change the oil in an e36 m3 with dyno oil, and no more than $50 with synthetic. Oil filters only cost $5, dyno oil should be no more than $2.50 per quart, synthetic oil should be no more than $5.50 per quart. You will get $7.50 for your labor, for something that takes you 15 minutes to do on a lift with tools already handy.

This is why I don't go to indy shops, or especially the dealer, for easy stuff. I can still say that since doing my motor swap, the only thing I have paid someone to do on my car is an alignment, and an a/c recharge.

Hey Vince, I called your shop and got the same quote for my 2002 530i. I'm planning on going in this weekend since I have some body work that should get done also. What kind of oil do you use for the BMW oil change? Also when I go there on Saturday, should I ask for you?

For me, since this is my first BMW I would rather have skilled hands do it, I don't want to mess anything up, plus I would like to have other things checked out. Maybe on the next one though. If I do some calculations for my car, 2002 530i, it takes about 8 quarts, plus the filter and o-rings comes out to be close to $50. So then I am paying them $35 to change the oil in 15 minutes. Instead of it taking me 1 hour or more with my tools, plus having to collect the old oil and take it to a oil recycling place (risking creating a spill/mess that I have to clean up). Time is money, and I'd rather pay a small fee to have it done right.

What does that mean? :confused
The cars I was considering was b/4 I got the 530i was the 330xi and the Mazda 3 & 6. The new GTI looks good to me too. But for my needs (a baby on the way) & wants (always wanted a BMW), the 530 was the best choice.

I do like working on cars, and I did plenty of work on my previous car - a '97 200SX SE-R - replaced clutch with help, replaced suspension with help, replaced my starter a few times, replaced headlights two times which involved electrical re-wiring, but I'm far from being a mechanic. Even though I was able to do all that, I still took it to the local oil-change facility since for ~$40 I got an oil change, I got my fluids topped off, I got an interior vacuum, and even a free car wash.

On my current car (530i) I replaced my front door speakers, installed my amp, the wiring, sub, and cut a hole for the bass. But there are things that I'm not too comfortable with and since this car cost me a lot more money and costs more to fix if broken, I don't want to risk things. Most of what I know is because I picked up a book/guide/write-up and did it, with no help from a real or experienced gear-head.

There's nothing different than any other car when it comes to changing bmw oil. Its your money, so spend it how you like.

Why would you trust anyone to change your oil, especially some random shop?

Domiguy..when you come in you can ask for me Vince. I'll check out whatever else you'd like some attention to as well.

It will be cheaper than the dealer..and not everybody chooses to do work on there own. Also we use only Castrol Synthetic. The oil filter lists at $8.75 from the dealer. Shops need to make money also..you pay for servicing like anything else.
