You can do this too:
1. Ctrl+a to select all
2. Select>modify>border>(input how much of a border you want), OK
3. Image>Adjustments>Levels..., then slide the white slider (one on far right), all the way back.
4. Repeat step 3 depending on how much white you want.

That's called feathering. When you use the box to crop the image in photoshop, change the feather from 0 px to a higher number. The higher the number, the moe whiteness...
