Go ahead an invest in a nice pistol, a nice set of sharp knives, and some decent rope. This way, when you are wanting to kill yourself the morning before your first CS exam, you'll actually be prepared.

But in all seriousness, people will bitch and moan about the women there. The truth is, that there are nice girls there; just not in overwhelming abundance. But realize, that if you get off your boo-tay and walk/drive about 500m off campus, you are smack dab in the middle of 'teh united state of atlanta', and there are girls everywhere. Be thankful. ;)

Being an engineering major + extracurricular activities = good times AND a quality education. :)

I was a Chemistry major until my first internship, where the career research scientists for whom I worked all told me to change to an engineering major. So I switched to Chemical Engineering. Best advice I ever got during my undergraduate career.

or you can do what i did and take the easy route. go to Ga Southern or Armstrong, or Sav. State and do the whole GTREP thing. if you want you can graduate with a Ga Tech degree w/o stepping foot on tech campus (although i kinda suggest transferring to tech once you get into your major classes since you get more choices and better resources).

its cheaper and alot easier, especially on all the basic classes like calc, physics, and such...plus much better selection of the female kind down in statesboro or savannah :buttrock

Bwahaha.

I used to be a physics major. Get out now. Go into engineering.

Management is the major for those who punk'd out or want to have fun. Most of them admit to it openly.

Advice?
-bring a shower bag to hold your clothes, (sometimes called a duck bag) along with some shower sandals. I cannot stress this enough.
-get a ti-89. It will save you years of time.
-do not skip calc1. I don't care if you got a 5 on the AP calc BC exam, retake calc 1. At the very least, it is an attainable "A". You will need all of those you can get.
-learn to love coffee. Get a coffee maker. Get a Brita pitcher and a fridge.
-Do not skip physics 1. I could have skipped it, but I took honors phys 1 and got a 5 credit hour "A". Very good way to start.
-Physics 2 will destroy you. Get used to it. That class has the single highest attrition rate in the entire school. I have met quite a few people who have taken it three times or more.
-Quantum will destroy you.
-Linear algebra is a very evil thing.
-Learn an Eastern language; it will help you to know when someone is making fun of you.
-don't feed the CS majors. You will be able to tell them by their translucent pallor, oily hair, and general lack of social skills.
-do not play world of warcraft. I have seen it ruin more than 30 students.
-even though it doesn't count, do homework.
-get out of east campus as soon as possible.
-get out of freshman housing as soon as possible.
-get into on-campus apartments as soon as possible.
-do not bring your car down unless you are out of state. It will get broken into at least once a year.

I'm sure more will come to me. I have been there for 4 years, going back for my final year in the fall. I'm a MechE now.

Sage advice.

-do not play world of warcraft. I have seen it ruin more than 30 students.
This reminds me of a Saturday morning when I was meeting a group of folks to take their pictures on the ballroom level of the Student Center. As more members of the group checked in and we started talking about the shoot, a geeky-looking student who was sitting on a nearby couch smiled and said sheepishly, "Sooo...I guess this isn't a meeting of the role-playing game club?"

We politely said, "No, it's not," and he left without a word.

Thats my major and let me tell you first hand - ID sucks ass. You work your ass off and when you're done in 4 years you wont have a job or a credible degree. Only a handful of ID grads found jobs when they graduated (I think 10%) and they only make $15-20 an hour. Job security? None. Good pay? Nope. ID is one of the biggest scams at Tech.

I'm currently a student there and hopefully should graduate sometime in '08 with an IE degree. Picking the right professors will help your grades a lot. Even in picking your classes for the first semester use the course critique website to see prof. gpa's, grade distributions and student comments etc...

physics huh?

Planning on teaching?

Or getting a useful advanced degree?

seriously, I know many physics and chemistry majors who are making $35k with masters degrees. Only ones who are making decent money are doing it in totally unrelated fields where their degree means next to nothing.

My advice to incoming freshman is to spend the first 4 years taking as many different classes in different majors you can find, and then choose which you would like to finish.

Nothing like the 7 yeah BA in history.. :buttrock

When I was at Tech I met a few folks in my non-engineering classes who were physics majors, biology majors, psychology majors, etc. A few years later, after they should have graduated, I ran into them again. They couldn't find jobs, and were back to get their masters. Even with a masters, they are probably facing a limited job market.

If you want a degree that will allow you to live comfortably and provide you with tons of opportunities, go with engineering.

Ga Tech EE "89. I transferrred in after getting most core classes done elsewhere (highly recommended, core classes are huge and brutal at GT to weed out the non-hackers). I love electronics, and am great in math, so the work wasn't too hard. I had a lot of friends from home going there, and we rented a big house in Home Park, and had a good time. I actually had a social life, partied hard, played lead in a blues band, even had a good looking girlfriend (she went to Auburn but transferred to Mercer after she met me - married a long time now LOL) I make pretty good money now, more importantly, I'm doing what I love. Paid cash for my new "05 ZHP gotta love it! SO it is possible to have a good time and do well going to Ga Tech. DAMN GOOD RAT!

Yeah, going to use it to get in to med school (Emory) and work on becoming a Neuro-Surgeon. Not going to bother using my AP classes to get past the first classes at Tech, heard too many horror stories... Well I'll prolly use the history 5's I have to get through those.

Then do biomed instead of physics. Physics is very hard at tech. Biomed will be a lot of work, but should be conceptually easier than physics by a wide margin. Of course, you have plenty of time to really decide and get a feel for things, as you really don't start taking major-related courses until sophmore year or so.

Yeah, skip history. Not worth the agony at Tech. Oh, and don't sleep through or forget about the Regent's exam, it is a bitch and a half to make up.

If you want, sometime early next fall, I can give you the real tour, not the sugar-coated crap they fed you at FASET and on the campus tour.

Oh, I just remembered another good bit of advice:
-do not get the meal plan. Have your parents give you that money instead and order out every few days. It is actually cheaper and the food is much better, both for you and taste-wise.
-do 12 hours your first semester. A light load will ease the transition, since it is a lot of change in very short order.
-don't waste your money on the buzzcard. You can only use it at the hideously overpriced bookstore and for laundry.
-buy your books online. Usually saves about 50%.
-the busses are good. Use them.
-when you have an actual room mate, the library is the best place to go to be alone. Just keep going up until you can't find anyone.
-MARTA is good. Use it.
-do not bring anything you cannot stand to see destroyed.
-be open to new food experiences.
-bring a large rug. The freshman rooms have tile floors, which makes waking up decidedly uncomfortable.
-bring a gamecube and smash brothers melee. Instant hall friends.
-make friends with an out-of-state kid, they usually have a car.

I don't plan on living on campus, the commute from my house now is not that bad and saves me a bit on the money side.... Yeah, I'll have to decide on the major, but from what I've heard to get the Neuro slots it's good to have the complex problem solving the physics will give you. I may take you up on that tour though, FASET stuff just sounds like a pain in the ass.

From Canton? That would be an hour and a half without serious traffic, to say nothing of the horror with real traffic. 80 miles a day=tank a week at least, which is roughly 250$ in gas a month, and that is not putting a price on the amount of stress and anguish such a commute will hurl upon you. One of my friends used to commute from Decatur; he had enough by the end of one semester and picked up a place closer in.

Plus, and I realize how cheesy it is to say this, it's part of the experience. HOPE will pay for your tuition (for the moment) so it's not like living closer or on campus would really cost that much. My friends from freshman year have been some of the best people I've met at this school. We all still keep in touch. Heck, I'm in a 6-er on campus and next year, 4 of the 6 will have lived in the same hall freshman year. That part of things was a lot of fun, I'll admit.

Problem solving is had with all the engineering majors, in a far more concrete fashion. Plus, if you do not get into the Neuro program, you will be up a creek with a physics major. The engineering would give you a viable alternative in case your plans didn't pan out quite right.

Zerrus
05-31-2006, 06:06 PM
I don't live that far into canton, I can be at the Masq in about 35mins from my house with no traffic. You may be right with the Major though... I'm going to see if I can't get in touch with with someone in the field and ask them a few questions.

Tech is not impossible if you stay on top of things. That's one thing I can say it taught me - responsibility and time management.

I graduated MechEng just over a year ago(seems like just a few months!), and like what I do now. Pay is not stellar for engineers right out of school IMO, but it is decent and there are at least some jobs out there.

I'd definitely look into engineering vs. a straight Phyzix degree. Think practical - and that really involves marketable skills. i.e. what can you do with a BS in Pyzix vs. a BS in engineering? That should answer a lot of questions you have about majors.

BTW - I went in as Chem E and am really glad I changed to Mech E. Mucho more enjoyable. :D
