View Full Version : Running a DE with a plugged tire a bad idea, right?

One of my rear tires developed a slow leak 7 months ago that was plugged (dealer decided the hole was too small to warrant a patch/plug combo).

I am going to a DE at Watkins Glen next month and just realized that this could be a problem.

So assuming that I need to change the tire (a patch/plug combo probably isn't that great either?) do I need to change both rear tires? The tires on the car have a fair amount of tread left, but I don't know how running a brand new tire and a used tire on the same axle will affect balance.

Should I just bite the bullet and order two new rear tires (Michelin PS2 = $$$)?

Thanks,
Pani

I wouldn't run a plugged tire unless it was one of those plugs that are actually a patch within the tire. When you plug a tire you go down one speed rating. I'd buy one new tire and keep the other as a spare. Maybe pickup another wheel to mount it to.

I have a spare used rear tire if you are interested that I just pulled off my car less than a month ago. I got a flat on one side and replaced both rears.

What size is it? Michelin PS2 right? If so, let me know how much tread is left. I may be interested.

I had a nail in one of my rear Goodyear GS-D3s...I had it patched and plugged with no problems. I've been to two two-day DEs since without a problem.

PS searching for "plug tire" or "plugged tire" does not bring up the post above.
